Sirlin.net: "The Anti-Progress Attitude"

So call it 4th Wave, 4th Time’s The Charm, whatfuckingever. No one said it had to be called SF3:3S! Is that really the issue?! Just add a few SF4 characters, 3-ize them, balance changes around the cast, maybe some new BGs and you’ve got a new game that lots of people would buy and love, even if they charged another $15 for it.

Capcom shot themselves in the foot repeatedly with how they handled HDR in general before Sirlin got a hold of it, namely with the release date pushbacks, their unwillingness to take a more hands-on approach, refusing to market the game at all, no release in Japan, and the fact that it came out JUST as SF4 was going to be released. They killed their own game, pretty much.

Mario Party is balanced, because dumb luck has a 10-0 matchup with the entire cast.

Umm, more like you didn’t make any point, because you used a completely false correlation.

Ok so if 3s did get a rebalance and an update and was called 4th Down with balance tweaks to bring the tiers closer together, as lOng as it isn’t called third strike y’all would be welcoming

See i see hdr as another update from all the console releases and anniversary collection. It brought the tiers closer without changing the core of the game at all. Thing is morons scream that hdr is blasphemy, that omg lol rebabalance it sucks. Sort or thing. I think it was a mob mentality of people who hate sirlin and for some reason it became cool to hate updates.

The same thing would happen to a 3s remix. The hate mob would say only scrubs play that baby version, and people who like it will defend the game but also say 3s is fun too. Only to be called idiots for giving “crapcom” money. Leading to flame wars between people who actually play the remixed game and people who never played the remix but hate on it because “omg not arcade perfect”

Wait, you actually think SF4 is a good game? Damn, and I thought people only played it because it was the new, and popular thing to play.Well, I hope you’re having fun with SF4.

“When” 3s was relevant? Have you been hiding in your SF4 cabinet? 3s is alive and well. It maybe not be as popular in America as before, but in Japan it’s still one of the top games at the arcade, and they have tons of Danisen tournaments… Fuck, even in France the game is huge. And I respect a lot of French players. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

“Riding a couple of Japanese players” Lol, ya, maybe I should give you a ride, bro! Fact is, the Japanese are the strongest in 3rd Strike, and they play a lot of different characters that you won’t find in America. Why is that a bad thing to like Japanese players at a game they dominate? I even like American players, but whatever you say.

I will keep playing 3rd Strike, and I’m sure everyone who’s played the game for more than a decade will keep playing it, and keep going to the arcades even if 3soe comes out. The SF4 community embarrasses itself, sorry. Sending death threats to Ono? Pathetic.

SF4 shoots everyone’s cred ten folds.

I’m just glad someone from the 3s community came out to say what needed to be said, even though sirlin didn’t say anything when mvc2 was released. Maybe his new game wasn’t out yet, and didn’t need the promotion.

Why did you bother to buy 3S?

No, I made a perfectly valid point. There has NEVER been a fighting game that was released with only balance changes. NOT EVEN ONE. So because of this fact,** just like James Chen decided to casually ignore the characters that weren’t Yun/Chun in the top eight, I’m casually ignoring the new features that were introduced and focusing on the balance changes** (since that’s what’s at the heart of the matter, not new voices, colors, HUD, and stages).

Look at Street Fighter 2 series. Look at Street Fighter 4 series. Look at Street Fighter Alpha series. Look at Guilty Gear. Blazblue. King of Fighters. Smash. Whatever sequential fighter you want. Look at them. They all came with new features and they all came with balance changes. And they all came with a new name, however minor. Even Street Fighter 4 with the patching capabilities and all it CAN do, the balance changes all came from updated games. It also came with new features, but no one talks about that because the balance is what matters.

So, where are you saying I’m not making a point?

TLDR in bold.

What’s up with people making the argument of “I beat x high tier character with x low tier character at my locals thus the game is balanced”? That’s anecdotal evidence at best and ignores that other factors maybe effected the outcome of the match like players not being as good as you for one. Give it a rest, please.

I think his point was that whenever a new Street Fighter 3 game was made, they changed the title to let everyone know it was a new game. If they changed 3S so that it was more balanced, it wouldn’t be Third Strike anymore.

James is wrong about Chun’s back fierce.

so… you hate games that are well designed and robust? Sirlin is right, something is very wrong with this community, it’s like Bizarro world.

Well this is incorrect information. Protoss versus Zerg was revolutionized by Bisu and even to this day, statistically Zerg still do better than Protoss. Also Terran does well against zerg and Protoss does well against Terran.

What’s funny is that Sirlin is using Starcraft as an example for why 3s should’ve been rebalanced when Starcraft hasn’t had a true balance update since like 2002.

What’s even better is that if Starcraft 1 were to be “remade”, you can bet fans will cry foul if it was rebalanced whatsoever. It would ruin their pristine game they’ve been playing for years, but for some reason, it’s okay to ridicule the “purists” of a game you don’t even play.

you mean like parrying

If they’d ever think of rebalancing 3S, why not do it like SNK did with 98UM and 2002UM? 98 was released a year earlier than 3S. They’re good rebalances/upgrades, and people still play OG 98 and 2002 (that may be due to the lackluster netcode of the console ports in comparison to GGPO). I think this is a better comparison than Starcraft.

In this case though people bought this expecting an arcade perfect version of 3S with great online capabilities. No reason to complain about it not being rebalanced.

The main issues with HDR is that it removes half the characters from the cast (SSF2 versions) and changed stuff more than some would like. However, I actually find no problems in helping Cammy or Sagat, or toning Vega and Balrog down. I just disagree with the ways a few things were done. And I acknowledge that this is a very comfortable position: I do not need to come with an alternative that works better than ST and prove it. Also, there was a relatively low file limit for the game - which they already had to increase - so that old backgrounds were not included, little budget and little support from Capcom. Also, as it is clear that the game was developed for XBox360 and just poorly ported over to PS3, the input lag in the latter was not discovered. Finally, it should have another patch, which Capcom did not bother providing. Those were not Sirlin’s fault.

The production delay - due to the art production - caused it to miss a place as the main EVO game, and the other year, when it was released, it was just to be smashed by the SF4 marketing within months. It could have attracted many more players than it did. No way it is worse than any SF4 version, ever.

Its like bizarro world where people cant read things correctly. I like games being explored rather than patched.

3S has already been explored, and there are numerous problems with the balance. The people who love the game should advocate for that to be addressed.

Allow myself to reiterate myself…

Who the fuck are u?

U gonna educate me on the fighting scene?

LOL Armchair warriors

All trolling aside he makes a great point and is the exact attitude to have for future fighting games. What he doesn’t seem to understand, however, is that after 10 or so years the game is what it is and they set out to release just that. Nothing more and nothing less in terms of the actual game itself.

If down the line they announce they want to continue the SF3 series with version 4.0 either as a robust crazy packed DLC or new XBLA game altogether then great! I’m all for it but that is not what they set out to do for 3SO.

TL;DR: some people need to learn the differences between a “re-release” and a “sequel”
