Sirlin.net: "The Anti-Progress Attitude"

Sirlin put up another post, and it’s hilarious how he agrees with another post saying that they should make projectiles unparryable.

Welcome to S+++++ tier Urien, friendly controller of the skies with his MP+HP spheres, raping Q and Hugo in 10-0 matches

LOL @ Sirlin, now he’s just trolling

Ignoring the discussion about whether or not 3S is balanced/good, Sirlin brought up a point I sort of agree with - whether or not a fighting game should be patched later on. He used Starcraft as an example rather erroneously - a better example would have been Tekken and Virtua Fighter, as these games got patched somewhat regularly. Even Guilty Gear XX went through several revisions. Interestingly enough, it’s primarily the SF community that is so resistant to changes and updates.

Will a fighting game ever be truly 100% balanced? I don’t think so. There will always be bad matches and tiers. But if things are excessive - a character completely dominates or is dominated, I think a balance patch or update would be a good thing. I remember before the announcement of SF4 that a lot of 3S fans were getting tired of seeing Chun/Yun/Ken dominated tournaments and the fanbase was starting to hurt because of that.

However, I think patches should be done on a yearly basis. It takes time to really figure out how a game and character matchups work. I think a good example is CvS2. From day one, we knew Cammy/Sagat/Blanka were good and Kyosuke was crap. That still holds today. But the mid-tier shifted A LOT over the years. Whenever I hear the latest CvS2 talk, I’m always surprised to hear that so and so character is considered to be top tier, because when I stopped playing they were mid-tier at best.

So, give us a year. Let the game change and develop in that time, and then make an adjustment based on our accumulated knowledge. Maybe all that happens is that the tier lists shift as new characters rise up and take the place of old ones. That’s fine. This can help to keep the game fresh.

Personally, I’m sort of split about the decision not to rebalance 3S. While I agree with updates I think too much time has passed, and considering the audience Capcom is appealing to with 3SOE a rebalancing would have meant they were trying to sell something that looked like 3S but wasn’t. However, I’m a big A3 fan, and I’ll be the first to admit that game was broken as hell. If Capcom re-released A3 I wouldn’t mind it being patched or updated (Upper?) to fix some of its issues.

“Deal with it” is the attitude we had to take when games didn’t get fixed. 3~4 years later, it really didn’t make sense to continue complaining about Sagat c.fierce or Chun c.mk hit confirm SAII, because it was in the game and it wasn’t getting fixed and you either dealt with it or just stopped playing. Now that we actually have the option to fix things, “deal with it” does not have to be the standard.

Man I wonder how much the KoF community bitched about the UM/FE versions splitting the community, oh wait.

Even if you don’t like Sirlin you really out to be able to figure out stuff like this without him explicitly pointing it out…

They bitched about 98um.

Blitz BALL

LOLOLOL

Krauser was nasty along with Geese and EX Geese, and i thought OG 98 Iori and Takuma was crazy good. They toned down the damage on alot of moves in 98um too. But I still love that game, 98, and 98um.

LETS BURN IT UP

Eh still less dumb than OG Daimon, Chizuru, and Iori. And man always found Eiji more annoying than Krauser personally, dem stupid hitboxes.

They bitched about KRAUSER. Not 98UM. The main reason 98UM wasn’t universally played over 98 was GGPO and the shittiness of the 360 port. The other reason was 2k2UM, which is also a pretty good remake, and Japan/Mexico generally prefer 02 to 98 (though I prefer 98 to 02).

You know what happened next? KOF98 Hero edition. They nerfed Krauser down to upper mid, along with a few other changes.

Really, the cancerous mentality really seems to be more of a problem with Capcom fans then non-Capcom fans. I put most of it down to selfishness or nostalgia blinding folks to a game’s warts.

Another funny hypocritical fact- all the slamming 3S folks have done on SF4- when SF3 was out, people on agsf2 were saying the same things about SF3 in comparison to SF2.

No, 98um Hero was only marketed to China, and they hated it do you hear anything about 98 Hero from China. The answer is NO.

so these are the rational reasons why 3s should have zero updates:

-There are magical things still to explore that could dramatically make it better lolz :stuck_out_tongue:
-Koruda did really well with Q before, this game is very well balanced
-This game is not very well balanced but we’ve been playing it for over a decade, we love it, any change made to it however minute will make it inferior and we won’t possibly like it at all
-Sirlin sucks and he designed a card game

Actually he gets MORE respect from a lot of the FG community for:

  1. Openly stating his view, even when it’s not pleasant for some ears.
  2. Saying things that are not just his own “wacky idea” but many other people think as well.
  3. Doing it in his own website rather than coming here and shoving it in your faces.
  4. Making hundreds of 3S fanboys extremely pissed. -Troll of the month in my book.

I think “can’t parry projectiles” really would make for more interesting gameplay. It would increase the importance of zoning, and is a much less drastic solution than “remove all parries.” As for removing parrying while in the air, I’m not really sure on that one. Would have to hear arguments for and against to weigh them. But it’s a bit too academic anyway, I don’t see such changes really happening.”

“Air paries can also create a guessing game situation that could be a good thing, but your point is a good one.** Probably removing both kinds of paries you said would truly allow a zoning game and would leave intact a ton of parry situations up close, and even at poking range that would still give the game a parry-feel. I think those changes would be worth trying.**”

^ Sirlin said these replies on his posts. I am quoting Sirlin word for word

That 3S is a badly balanced game is a separate argument from whether Capcom should have made any changes and whether Sirlin is right about that. Those two points should be kept discrete.

You look disgruntled.

 Well Accuse me, Correction - He’s losing respect from some of the 3S Community that grew to love the game the way it is. Thus making them pissed, as you said.

Nah. I can see why somebody that actually is out there winning and learning a game on a competitive level would be annoyed by some random calling him out.

I didn’t call him out. I stated my opinion on the community, and game itself, and he got offended. The truth is that people really don’t like SF4, and only play it because it’s the new popular thing that has the most cash connected to it. I still remember everyone bitching at how SF4 sucks. If he likes SF4, then so be it.

Play Akatsuki Blitzkampf. It’s a good game!

So this is David Sirlin…

I dislike the thread title. What’s wrong with being a 3s purist?

Never played the game before (Yeah, come at me, guys. I’m a '10er.), and he makes one good point, but come on. Can’t the longtime players get an optimal version of the game they’ve played for years without shit like this?
