Sirlin.net: "The Anti-Progress Attitude"

What if Sirlin’s idea of a fun game is directly related to something as objective as game balance?

Yun beats Chun.

I would have bought 3SOE if it had a remix mode. I really don’t give a shit about the features they added, if I want to play I could just dust off my Anniversary Collection.

That’s exactly what Sirlin thinks, but Sirlin believes that this reason is the ONLY reason why fighting games are fun, and that’s not true. It’s definitely the most popular reason, but definitely not the only valid reason to play fighting games.

I don’t understand the rampant ignorance in this thread.

Street Fighter 3: New Generation.
+
Balance changes = Street Fighter 3: Second Impact.
+
Balance changes = Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.
+
Balance changes = Street Fighter 3: Third Strike?

How could anyone possibly imagine that as being a logical possibility?

If a game should be balanced how about actually balancing Akuma, you stupid fuck.

Reluctant to even chime in here because while david makes a point it should read “If releasing a fourth chapter we expect to see” and just let a true port be exactly that.

Also taking the time to push his personal agenda just invalidates the majority of his points.

Think this thread should be closed soon. We Bashing Sirlin something serious lol.

(*Which I dont mind, he basically ask for it by writing an article like this, what was he thinking the 3rd Strike community, and others that love it wont retaliate, what is he fucking, crazy does he want people to hate him even more after the hate he got from HDR *)

He need to quite down, and stop before he digs himself into a hole to deep to climb out off. He’s losing alot of respect from the FG community.

When I got further down and saw puzzle whatevers mentioned I just let out a groan. Infact when I saw his shit pop up on board game geek years ago I let out a groan. He really is detestable and seems to have the social skills of a walrus.

I’m not sure he’s making the case as to whether or not the game is fun but he is saying the game is objectively imbalanced (I say objectively because this can be backed based on objective criteria such as match-up charts and tier lists.)

Personally, I don’t think a fundamentally broken game is fun and I don’t think a fighting game with one or 2 playable characters is either but if others thinks so than they are entitled to feel that way. However I don’t think that’s the point anyone is raising here. If you are saying the game isn’t imbalanced then you are wrong.

In addition to balance changes those games introduced new mechanics, characters, features, stages, and music. The games are not revisions of each other but evolution of the engines and experience. Balance changes alone probably wouldn’t constitute or even justify a sequel.

3S is a hugely unbalanced but fun game. Any comments on balance other than Yun/Chun/Ken utterly dominating is just revisionist history. Sure Kuroda can beast with anyone; he’s Kuroda. A game with so many 7-3s and 8-2s is broke. At the very least I wouldn’t mind an optional/selectable DLC balance patch and neither would anyone else. Don’t want to learn “new” techniques? Then go play on your dusty ass SF3 cab by yourself. Denial is adorable on SRK

I’m in a similar boat, though I really, really, really considered dropping the cash for it just for the really cool feature set (YouTube uploads and holy cow GGPO). I might still if I have friends who want to play, but I really wanted it to be SF3 Third Strike + Fourth Extramboranza.

KABOOOOM!

This would be fine. Absolutely fine. I have no problem with them separating the two. That said, I stand by my argument. If you’re going to call it 3rd Strike, it absolutely must be 3rd Strike. If you want to rebalance it and call it 3rd Strike Remix/Rebalance/2011/Dash/Whatever, that’s fine too, but you can’t call it one and make it the other. It would be a complete falsification and entirely incorrect. If Capcom released HDR and just called it ST, do you think people would be ok with it?

That’s how we feel.

If we’re talking about balance:

I’ve played 3S forever and all this talk about only 10% of the cast being effective kinda annoys me. I played 3S in the FFA days when FFA was the Mecca for 3S. The gameplay there is so evolved. Every character in 3S is effective. I personally dominated a lot of Makotos, Uriens, Chuns, Yuns, Kens, Akumas, and Dudleys with my Twelve and Q (Who are considered by the mainstream crap characters).

To say it’s like MVC2 where there are only six characters is wrong. The whole cast in 3S is great. I think for a lot of ppl who played SF2 and SF4, 3S is just an entirely different game. It can take a while to learn.

The classic fundamentals of an SF2/SF4 Ryu player don’t work in 3S. It is the most “non Street Fighter” of all Street Fighter games. Which makes it unique and great.

I wish I had signed up under the username “Number 1 Sirlin Fan”.

Things that I think would make cool DLC:

  1. alternate, better versions of low-tier characters – Shin Sean, Thirteen, whatever

  2. Super Art IV for everyone – something silly and gimmicky for top-tiers (on par w/ XCOPY or Total Destruction), something actually good for low tiers

And some kind of option to ban them from lobbies, for the ‘purists’ out there.

So… best of both worlds, adds to the existing game without messing it up, doesn’t ‘split the community’ to any meaningful degree? Yes/no? Just brainstormin’ here.

What’s all the bullshit about “splitting the community” anyways? Lots of people prefer A2 > A3, HF > ST, even HDR > ST and find a way to coexist. Boohoo that your fucking precious game isn’t mainscreen on EVO.

BTW HDR is a great game and actually incredibly well-balanced, so Sirlin did something right. 1/2 the reason HDR failed was because of asshole purists and top-level players blasting it left and right, and everyone knows it. And if anyone knew how to read, they knew going in that it was a different game than ST, so where’d all the OMG BUTTHURT come from?

As far as ST goes, I would rather play the classic ST. If HDR is the only thing available at the time so be it. I hate the fact that the community was split up after HDR came out shortly after, but I am happy to see it coming back little by little. Just sucks that people disagreed so much they nearly killed it.

You’d be surprised at just how few people realize that you can go into that wonderful Options menu and play Classic ST in HDR anytime you want. Online too! I kinda had to LOL at the clown who used HDR Honda’s Jab Headbutt negating FBs as proof that HDR was ass (guess he didn’t know that a late Jab Headbutt ALWAYS passed through FBs in the SF2 games)… clearly doesn’t play the game because Honda still dies hard vs. FBs, and overlook GREAT changes like the removal of his Ochio loop, a technique that slaughtered 80% of the cast with no effort…
