Showdown Championships - Apr 27-29 - Houston, Tx

u live in norcal. good for u so u think ppl should waste there money going to something that sounds like they are fucking it up?

One, I was never told I was going to be staying in the ghetto. Two, I’m only scared because I’m not used to that kind of life… Obviously you guys are. and Three, I heard Josh Wong punches people in the face randomly cause he feels like it, and going outside wouldve been the same as staying inside because the water didnt work aka no toilet and there was a $10 heater on teh ground that about 20 other people seemed to be used to crowded around.

Ok, slash for $300, and ac for $300? you win both bam that’s your trip right there.

We don’t need to be praising anymore than it has been if you guys kept your mouth shut and leave the thread.

Tell you what, You can pick every game if you pay for the venue.

Actually I can pretty accurately predict how this will go:

-1 million random anime nerds will enter guilty gear, melty blood, and arcana heart, forcing the tournaments to run long.
-Japan will win all events besides maybe ST/MvC2/Tekken and in the end people will get bored of watching them onstage (just like EVO). They will also be the most uncharismatic and boring people ever (as usual).
-Lots of top-level Marvel players will be extremely frustrated when forced to fight “team God” aka Justin/Sanford/Yipes/etc., then find out they have to stay with the same team they picked their first round match FOR THE ENTIRE TOURNAMENT. Good luck enforcing that rule in MvC2.
-ST will be a clusterfuck of counter matches, with the results based solely off of lucky placing in the brackets, where your team didn’t get counter-matched by another team. Good luck avoiding counter-matches when you’re stuck with the same character for the whole tournament!
-People who like casuals and games like CvS2 will be bored to tears when they find out that they can’t play money matches, can’t throw a side tournament event (except in a tiny hotel room??), and are crowded around by anime nerds.

Bottom line: This tournament seems to be geared less and less to the competitive fighting gamer, and more towards the Japanese fanboy. Why else are you running events in Arcana Heart/Guilty Gear/Melty Blood that have NO chance of any USA players placing in, because only 2 arcades in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES have these games, and they have no console release?

It’s an interesting business plan, basically get Japs over here to make more anime fans enter. It will work. But it’s going to drastically reduce the quality of this tournament and turn it from “for the players” to “for the headcount.” Quality vs. Quantity. Catch my drift?

The major turnoff right now for most players is that you’ve included tournaments for 3 games that nobody in the US will play, then have no particular reason for excluding CvS2, which has been a cornerstone of Texas Showdown for the past 3 years. In fact, I’ll go on to say that CvS2 has been THE event to watch at Texas Showdown…between the alliance of Buk/Nestor against the Japs in 2005, to the rivalry of east vs. west when Nestor/Wall/Smooth faced off against Valle/Cole in 2006…CvS2 was THE game to watch.

This year?

Sorry but I’m going to skip the 12 year old girls and midget cats with lazer beam eyes going at it on the big screen.

And now that the majority of East Coast players are not going, I will have nobody reliable to team with for games like MvC2 and 3s…so I’d only be entering ST…and even if I won (which is hardly a guarantee) I would come out in the negative BIGTIME when you consider I’d only get $350. You could argue I’m going on a trip and that’s worth it, but no offense, if this were a vacation I’d be going to Borneo or Japan or something, not to an anime convention. i don’t even really like anime

My attendance is still under debate…I have to think this through…

???

No more GG?

Wha happeN!?

Listen yoooooon, i dont think you are qualified to say any of that not being the one that is going to spend a couple of hundred dollars on tickets/hotel. The only thing you have to lose is maybe a car ride

How about this, new england boycott.

While you can understand why the TS staff would be in favour of change, it looks like “change” and “discriminate” are synonymous in this particular situation. Would it really hamper the tournament so much to not exclude a game that obviously A LOT of people are clamouring for? Tournaments are supposed to be about the players and if the players want it then who is any organizer to deny them the opportunity if they have the means?

I had been looking forward to attending Texas Showdown since I got my new job last year and even put aside vacation time so I could come down (I’m from just outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada) for the one game I’m actually not garbage at and now it’s all a wash.

If you can run CvS2 then please do so. It has no detrimental impact to the tourney and only serves to draw more players, many of which cross play other games.

Adding to my Philadelphia/NEC experience and this is true(FlashMetroid knows), while we were at the chinese take out in Philadelphia (own the street from Josh’s), there was a 12 year old hooker, 8 year old, and about a 25 year old ALL hitting on FlashMetroid AND Alex Perales. Now if that aint ghetto, gtfo.

And that is why I’m never going to NEC again.

 He lives in norcal…that would be a hell of a car ride.

lol so u are saying since u are paying it dont matter whhat games? lol wow u are a really good at hold a event . by next year u should be out of a job cause u are going on your own thoughts and not the players. and ppl wonder why ppl quit playing fighters cause ppl are all about themselves

lol marn . all i got out of want u just said is that u are talk shit about blacks and asians very nice man . i hope i see u so i can punch u in your fat head. u talk alot of cshit for someone that is a pussy

No, I don’t think people should go if they think they are wasting their money. BUT NO ONE IS HOLDING A GUN TO YOUR HEAD TO FORCE YOU TO GO.

I haven’t made my final decision on attending yet, but emotiongear is fronting every damn cent/man hour to make this event. he can do whatever the fuck he wants. if he wants the game list to be fucking barbie’s fantastic adventure, so fucking be it–he doesn’t owe shit to anyone. and as sage said, if you don’t like barbie’s fantastic adventure, boycott it. you’re free to do whatever the fuck you want.

What the fuck does this have to do with anything besides you being a fat pussy?

On topic, please.

Mannn it was all up to you… I dont want to clutter the thread with BULLSHIT like this but since you’re making it relevent I’ll tell you what happened.

We got to the apartment and saw the conditions(no heat, warm water, consoles) you were bummed and wanted your money back with Alex. You told me Josh Wong would STAB you in the face(WHACK) when Josh Wong is one of the nicest guys I know. I tell Josh for you that you want your money back and he was offended that you’d be whack like that when you’re down stairs yourself. WE even told you that you could stay in our hotel room with alex FREE of charge because of the situation when all of us were paying and even said you could shower in the room in the morning if not, you would not ask for your money back IT IS NONE OF OUR FAULT. Welcome to Philly, you’re lucky a kid on a bike didn’t stab you for your cell phone with the ice cream sundae pictures on it. If you want to hate me over something you could of totally finished with a 10 second talk with Josh Wong then have that be your own problem, you obviously were content enough to sleep in his house.

I’m leaving it as that and I apologize for having this explanation be in this thread. Marn grow up.

looks like this thread is back open.

who wants to resume bitching first?

i like playin fighting games dunno bout you guys :7)

So you guys realized 0 people are coming to this, unlocked the thread so that you may apologize to the community, add Cvs2 and change the rules to something more sensible?, And here I was giving up on the lot of you

No one can say totally if it going to work or not because one persons idea of success is different from someone elses. Even taking on the assumption that youre making the changes in the best interests of the community is different from person to person. So you really have to take into account the goals and objectives of the person(s) pulling the strings.

People go to tourneys to compete and win: not to compete and lose. But they want to feel that they have a chance at winning to some degree. They dont want to feel that they wasted theyre money and travel expenses for nothing. People are under the notion that gamers are rich and well off when theyre not. For those that have jobs that pay and parents with disposable funds: great.
For everyone else, they like to see the particulars to know whether or not theyre being jobbed. For other people, they like to support the community, give money, time, and effort back into the product. Most plan to socialize and hang out, and others plan to be in attendance see the best players. But if that was the case then why all of the change? We enjoy the casuals way more than the tourneys anyways. Youre pissing off the casual people, but catering to the select group at the same time.

Being at an anime convention, all they want is entrants; and that means ANYONE. The fact that people may or may not be good at whatever game doesnt really matter because it more than levels the playing field between those with no talent and those with marginal talent. So it would be fun for some, but frustrating for most gamers because we hate losing to mashers. with or without money at stake. I seem to remember there being a tourney with that new samurai showdown some time ago when no one really new how to play or what-not. Itll be fun till the people that practice the game get involved, and then youre wasting your money.

Second, for some odd reason, it seems that running CVS2 is a pain in the ass and takes the longest amount of time. So I can somewhat understand that. But that being said, people still play it, so why not.

Third, a team tournament is only good for locals. People that have to roll in from out of town dont always roll with a group, so finding teammates will be a pain, if you dont have them locked up way in advance. With it structured like this, you wont have any random entrants because there will be no way for it to happen. So the field will be very limited. And things ALWAYS have a way of screwing up in the process as people cant make it, show up late. Etc etc. So if you take the initiative and drive to play, then you risk the possibility of taking a small financial hit just to see your average non colorful person/team win. That being said; expect no surprises in those tourneys.

Fourth, there probably are more underlying reasons for all these changes than what on the surface. Running things in the past either required a lot of consoles, or a lot of cabinets. Neither of which are always on high supply, so making it a team tourney is a good way to maximize resources and eliminate some problems. Expect the average gamer to get left out as established people in the community, friends, and veterans soak up any possible teammates.

Its a copycat world. Just doing what works for one area or demographic doesnt guarantee that it will work the same somewhere else. Lots of the right resources and circumstances have to be in order for that to happen otherwise you end up with a well thought out, somewhat predictable mess.
When you make changes like this, its best to do thorough research to feel the pulse of the community so that there are no surprises. Since the community is supporting, then the community has the power. If youre doing something in the best interest of the community without the communities consent, then youre governing people without them asking to be. Why are you worrying about making people happy when they were happier? You dont need to reinvent the wheel when the wheel is rolling fine

A few questions I have to the organisers just to clarify some things for me as I am a bit confused as to what’s on offer on a few points…

  1. Just to clarify, 3s and ST are on arcade, JP head-to-head cabinets with JP sticks/buttons etc?

  2. Is there a BYOC/casuals area?.. and if there is I read somewhere that there will be no casual tourneys allowed in BYOC. Is this true? (Not being able to hold a BYOC singles tourney for 3s/ST etc would really suck imo)

  3. How many arcade cabinets will be set up for 3s throughout the weekend? (For tournament and casual use if there is any) Will it be a set number or alternating due to having to switch out games? (Eg; SF3 (CPS3) changing to ST (CPS2) etc)

Apart from that despite the fact that they are team tourneys (and I know little to no players personally from the US to team up with) this event is possibly more attractive to me than Evo simply because it is arcade and on JP cabinets which I am used to playing on locally and not US sticks and more importantly it is not console unlike Evo. (At least, this is what I am lead to believe so far)

Hopefully I can time my trip to see family in TX this year around the time of this event… good luck to the organisers, hope it all works out well.

The website should answer some of your questions. Someone else might answer your 3rd question.

Problem is, team tournaments leave some people out. Some people aren’t going because the format doesn’t allow them to participate. Where I live, nobody really plays 3S. I don’t have a team.

Jive Out!
