Showdown Championships - Apr 27-29 - Houston, Tx

lol. there’s a lot of worthless argument here…either go or don’t really.

some people need to look up the word “evolution”(not talking about the tournament either), then think about this tournament again before they make remarks based on ignorance.

like 5 people in tx still play this…and we are one of the biggest states.

Actually I can pretty accurately predict how this will go:

-1 million random anime nerds will enter guilty gear, melty blood, and arcana heart, forcing the tournaments to run long.
-Japan will win all events besides maybe ST/MvC2/Tekken and in the end people will get bored of watching them onstage (just like EVO). They will also be the most uncharismatic and boring people ever (as usual).
-Lots of top-level Marvel players will be extremely frustrated when forced to fight “team God” aka Justin/Sanford/Yipes/etc., then find out they have to stay with the same team they picked their first round match FOR THE ENTIRE TOURNAMENT. Good luck enforcing that rule in MvC2.
-ST will be a clusterfuck of counter matches, with the results based solely off of lucky placing in the brackets, where your team didn’t get counter-matched by another team. Good luck avoiding counter-matches when you’re stuck with the same character for the whole tournament!
-People who like casuals and games like CvS2 will be bored to tears when they find out that they can’t play money matches, can’t throw a side tournament event (except in a tiny hotel room??), and are crowded around by anime nerds.

Bottom line: This tournament seems to be geared less and less to the competitive fighting gamer, and more towards the Japanese fanboy. Why else are you running events in Arcana Heart/Guilty Gear/Melty Blood that have NO chance of any USA players placing in, because only 2 arcades in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES have these games, and they have no console release?

It’s an interesting business plan, basically get Japs over here to make more anime fans enter. It will work. But it’s going to drastically reduce the quality of this tournament and turn it from “for the players” to “for the headcount.” Quality vs. Quantity. Catch my drift?

The major turnoff right now for most players is that you’ve included tournaments for 3 games that nobody in the US will play, then have no particular reason for excluding CvS2, which has been a cornerstone of Texas Showdown for the past 3 years. In fact, I’ll go on to say that CvS2 has been THE event to watch at Texas Showdown…between the alliance of Buk/Nestor against the Japs in 2005, to the rivalry of east vs. west when Nestor/Wall/Smooth faced off against Valle/Cole in 2006…CvS2 was THE game to watch.

This year?

Sorry but I’m going to skip the 12 year old girls and midget cats with lazer beam eyes going at it on the big screen.

And now that the majority of East Coast players are not going, I will have nobody reliable to team with for games like MvC2 and 3s…so I’d only be entering ST…and even if I won (which is hardly a guarantee) I would come out in the negative BIGTIME when you consider I’d only get $350. You could argue I’m going on a trip and that’s worth it, but no offense, if this were a vacation I’d be going to Borneo or Japan or something, not to an anime convention. i don’t even really like anime

Quality Vs Quantity…
So fuckin True

I believe there are doing this because its probably going to be the last Texas Showdown in my opinion…
Lets not forget about what happend last year…

After this year Texas is Done…

Now I heard threw an inside source that this is not Chris doing but the owners of PZ…And when u think about it …they could give a fuck about who comes just so long as they make they money…Which I predict that After this year PZ is probably going to be out of business…and you can quote me on that…

Chris…you may gain a lot of entry from the anime, but you will lose in the long run…Who will want to come to any tournys of houston after this…

Perhaps I’m wrong, but I thought tournments was for the people to enjoy…(you known money matches…seeing who is the best…grudge matches…people from all over meeting one another in person…) you know that kinda stuff…but its seems that the people running it are just out to fatan there pockets?..
Next time when you all sit down…discuss what the overall people want and not how much u can take in from it…
Sorry Chris …you know its not personal…but you let PZ change you…Quote’

i don’t speak on this year’s showdown’s behalf or anything, but here’s how i see it after devoting a lot of time/energy to ts6 last year… hopefully some understanding can be reached… or maybe i just feel like deliriously rambling :x

on the quality vs quantity issue:

the tournament isn’t able to survive just off of tournament entries from the hardcore srk crowd(the ‘community’ that so generously ‘supports’ these events)… unless they are content with barely scraping by[barely having enough equipment and barely paying for the venue], and having to stay at the horrible-smelling red carpet inn or whatever the hell it was, 10 minutes [driving] from the venue.

so now, the tournament is turning to sponsors(!), so it can be held in a nice venue(with a hotel across the street), and have proper resources to run smoothly…

but unfortunately-- some sacrifices have to be made (tournament format changes, etc), to appeal to sponsors… to increase the production/entertainment value of the tournament, as well as draw a solid headcount to gasp gain interest from new people and try to expand this fighting-game-community thing.
also, a large head-count is crucial to getting more sponsorship for future tournaments, where fewer sacrifices will have to be made, and a tournament can be held that appeals to even more people… and hopefully things grow from there.

cliffnotes: you can’t have your cake and eat it too… or some other bullshit cliche.

…hope that some part of this was coherent

how exactly does taking off CvS2 and making everything a team tourney on jap cabinets appeal to sponsers?

i think it’s a strange excuse, but it’s none of my [our] business :((
it might be a stretch, but it could tie into the ‘higher entertainment-value’ aspect. (personally, i think high-level cvs2 is exciting, people with money disagree apparently)
people sitting on the floor, playing on ps2’s isn’t very (lacking a better word) professional to the random spectator…

could probably call bullshit on it, but what is that going to accomplish…

The thing noone’s been able to explain is why Marvel is still in the line up.

If this was a true evolution you’d include the OLD and the NEW, this is more of a forced change really.

:\

maybe because marvel is entertaining, or the shiny colors impress anime-scrubs, or the organizers feel it’d be bad business to drop marvel in a primarily ‘marvel-town’.
it doesn’t really matter why…

this isn’t really directed at anybody specifically, but why should players be entitled to anything… seems like this is being repeated x infinity in this thread, but; either pay for entry if you like what you see, or don’t…

…should probably sleep before embarrassing myself further :wasted:

don’t be embarrased, you said what i was going to say but i figured nobody would pay attention or think before they continued bashing anyway.

All I see are the people who live in Houston or in Texas defending this tournament. Sure, that’s to be expected, but telling the people who wanted to come to this that we’re not entitled to anything doesn’t help your case at all, but then at this point it looks like you guys don’t much care anyway. If you guys are fine playing yourselves then that’s cool I guess.

I am from Tx. Now im not going to bash on whats going on here.

But please dont say its TEXAS doing this or defending that. Ill let you know right now that I know alot of people from tx who have the same feelings you all have as far as the changes of the tournament. Its just the few people who are in favor of the tournament or backing it up the majority were from tx, but they do not speak in half of the entire state of texas, they are barely a handful of players when looking at texas players as a whole.

They are expressing their OWN individual opinion NOT TEXAS’.

-DJ-

I talked to PZ Owner today and he said he checked the games played for a month awhile back… And it was something along the lines of:
GG Slash: 2400
Tekken: 1800
Rumble Fish 1: 900

CvS2: 8.

@ Demon:

You have people in Texas who aren’t even going to go to this because of how the situation is being ‘handled’ (it’s not really, I’m just kicking a dead horse around for fun). That’s pretty sad if you ask me. I never said that the people being vocal here represent Texas either, but thus far they’re the only ones that are for it. Not much outside of that.

@ Marn:

You proved my point 1,000,000 % man, good job.

Marn: I hope you have fun rubbing your texas team mates balls during all the team tourneys. I already figured out this is more of a texas exclusive tourney not catered at all to the rest of the people other than maybe the Japanese since you guys suck their dicks so much. Have fun with the “evolution” of this tourney playing MvC2 and ST (which isnt at SBO btw). Fuck all you eccept Lay and DavidH.

Chibi:Thats basically what I was saying. the people who are for it and have vocally said anything are from texas but yeah alot of tx players arent happy. Myself included. Im glad i refreshed my page, i guess its from the fact that I slept none in the last two days but I was having a hard time following that first sentence. I need sleep:wasted:

Oh and just for the record the majority of TX had no clue of what was going on with this years showdown. its just as a surprise to us as it is to you.

But I do hope things work out for the best.

TEXAS SHOWDOWN 5 = BEST TOURNAMENT OF ALL TIME

-DJ-

The bottom line is, Texas Showdown is dead. This isn’t Texas Showdown at all.

This is Showdown Championships. AKA Emotiongear the owner of Planet Zero controls everything and nobody else gets a say. AKA lots of Japanese games nobody cares about besides…well…japanese fanboys. Which is also the reason they are paying to fly in the Japanese players. This is, simply put, a business venture. I can see through it since I understand business.

Is it a good move for the short-run, business-wise? Yes. They will get lots of random entries from the anime convention and will probably come out on top no matter what.

Is it a smart thing to do for the long-run? No. Because you are basically taking all the players who have built up Texas Showdown to what it has become over the past few years, lined them up, and slapped them all collectively in the face at once. Maybe these players aren’t rich and aren’t lining the pockets of the tournament organizers, but they are what has kept the Street Fighter community together over the past few years, through NO new games and NO support from anyone besides the GAMERS, throwing their own money into things to keep the scene alive.

Is it 100% fair to condemn Ranma and the Texas Showdown staff for what has happened? Absolutely not. i said last night on the radio that if it were up to Ranma, I’m pretty damned sure he would have every SF game on the lineup and then some. But unfortunately none of us are rich…

The bottom line is, this event will probably be a great success monetary-wise, but a HORRIBLE failure quality-wise. Nobody is going besides maybe a dozen actual SF players…plus the locals. All I can say is, I hope you really do keep teaming up with this Anime Matsuri convention, because without it this tournament would have been a horrible failure.

As for me…DXP is sitting this one out. I don’t like being told that people know better than me, and everyone knows I’m not much of a fan of japan-worshipping and ballriding…and that really seems to be what this event is all about at this point.

and if you’re not down with that?

i got TWO WORDS FOR YA!

and finnally one person who may be begining to understand this tournament, almost there. its all arcade all japanese quality. no consoles here friend, no fagmapping of buttons for gimps who suck at execution, and no pause screens. this tourny is about being “more like” a japanese tourny and breaking away from “american standards” but the keyword is “more like” not completely for ovious reasons. thats why were running the new games cause we have, and next year it will force other arcades that care to stay on their toes and get the new games faster.

in any case i promise this tourny is going to turn heads, and next year will be different despite this communities skepticism things are on the move for change.

Other arcades?

Man you’re turning heads right now.

In disgust.

Hey I play 3s, you’re the one that hasnt showed up to play in a while

anyway
I do think that leaving CVS2 out is a huge mistake

And somehow, making it only a team tourney seems kinda frsutrating for some
people, this idea was just too rushed.
I really hope you can just relax and change some stuff before tx gets a bad reputation.

personally i cannot stand reading your post but i keep doing it just to see what bullshit you will spout next, i cannot wrap my brain around why your still posting, do you plan to try and change something? cause it wont happen. Look man youve made it CLEAR more than crystal that you do not like this event. so i have two words for you

“dont go”
