you obviously have never went to any of the Texas Showdowns before.
…lol.
you obviously have never went to any of the Texas Showdowns before.

No, I have not. I’m a really good SSBM player that has done well at stuff and has traveled before, but never to this tournament. I got 7th at Evo East, for example. I’m only going to this because I’m visiting family down there and I got lucky that this tournament is over one of the two weekends I’ll be in Texas.
My experiences at other anime conventions have been quite terrible in terms of videogame tournaments, so forgive my doubts and suspicions.
The lack of any Brawl rules or regulations being posted also has be worried.
I think ive broken this rule a few times. :wgrin:
Inui:
Even though we do have a history of running Smash tournaments in the past at Texas Showdown 5/MLG Houston, this year Showdown staff is not actually running the Smash tournament. Info about the tournament can be found here. To my understanding there will be 3 different events for Smash, Singles, Teams, and FFA. Sorry I can’t provide more detailed info, but I hope that helps.
Stone:
Forget your password again or too lazy to log in? Either way, yeah we’ll have a PA system and constantly run gophers back and forth to find you guys. When you sign up for Showdown tournaments, you should be getting a schedule for your pools once you pick up your badge.
they will be real tournaments and while your there, maybe you would like to lose some money to a “real” guilty gear player? what do you say? 20$ 2/3? GGAC
It says double elimination at least, and that’s good enough for me.
If you guys are running Guilty Gear, then I’m not worried about that one being real.
No. I’m not a tournament Guilty Gear player. This will probably be my second tournament after I enter Rigel’s on March 1st. I just started getting decent at the game.
I’ll happily money match you in any of the three Smash games, however.
although smash is incredibly popular i do not play those games, i am a japanese arcade fighter enthusist. so i only play fighting games that make it into japanese arcades. well just let me know when you think your good at GG and ill be sure to show you otherwise.
Uh, whatever. I don’t see why you’re being an ass about it to me, but okay. It’s not like I claimed to be good or claimed you weren’t good or anything of the sort.
cause i like being an ass.
Jake, stop posting when its a dead issue.
Yoh, the reason why Brawl rules aren’t up yet is because we’re still testing all the stages, items, characters, gameplay, etc to determine the best rule sets. We actually already have a rule set, but we don’t want to post it until it’s been better tested. Thus far though, I can tell you for sure it’s going to be double elimination (as all tournaments should be), three stock, max time 5 min, all KO items banned, rest of items set to low (we’re still tweaking the allowed items list, but it’s not very many), smash ball on, team attack on, all characters allowed, and we’re currently working on which stages are banned.
Hope this helps diffuse some apprehensions about the tournaments. Yes, unfortunately anime con tournaments have a bad rep… But we’re working hard to clear that.
It’s cash pot too (70/20/10), so I’m sure you’ll love that.
^ ~
Ban all items. Trust me. I’m a tournament player for Smash and I know how gay and broken they are, and they add too much luck. Imagine playing GG and then all of a sudden your opponent got all his health back because an item dropped in front of him.
We have stage bans in the Smash community already. Smashboards is down, or I’d link you to the thread.
hahaha you play guilty gear.
I understand your concern, but… Brawl is not Melee. Items don’t entirely deal with luck. Items were banned in Melee because of the random crates exploding factor. That made the game random and that wasn’t going to fly in competitive play. But in Brawl that was taken out (crates are labeled now, etc), so items can be used now. But don’t worry, no “broken” item will be allowed. That’s why all KO items and health restoring items will be banned. And the rest of the items are set to low. See, items help balance the game (in Melee, for example, Fox sucks terrible when items are on, but since they are off, he’s suddenly god tier - Peach has her own items and well, I’m sure you’ve seen vegetable spam, so you can understand that items helped level the playing field for the other characters, oh like Marth loosing his ability to use powerful smash attacks while holding an item, but being top tier if items are off, Mewtwo suddenly stops sucking and actually becomes high tier if items are on as he can hold items, like the saber, at a distance from himself while using it giving him a bigger hit box - so yes, items help balance a game). It takes skill to properly use an item (like when to shoot, how to shoot, etc) and even then, it impairs your ability to use other moves, so the player must decide if they’re willing to forgo the character’s original move set in order to use the item, or not. Plus lots of characters have “items” built into their character (like Wario’s bike or Samus’s armor and transformation). But don’t worry, like I said before, most of the items are banned, but the “non-broken” ones will be allowed. Including the smash ball. It actually does take skill and mind games to break that thing open so it’s not random. And don’t worry, we’re tournament players for Smash (and other games) too. But we’re not about to automatically use Melee’s rule set for a completely different game - we’re going to use a new rule set that has been designed especially for it. We’ve already tested several rule sets last weekend at Ikkicon and it was mutually decided that items (non-KO or healing) could and should be on. So, we’re just testing each one right now to confirm them for use. I hope this makes sense.
Don’t worry, we’re smash players too (we know about the smash boards), and we hate gay tournaments, and we understand where you’re coming from. We’re here to give ya’ll the best, so trust us with putting the best on the table. You can expect nothing less from us.
… Oh, Holy Order Sol boss mode recovers his health - and without the use of items! Heh, gotta love those gears.
Will the top 3 prizes be given at showdown?
Yes, all prizes will be given out at the Awards brunch on Sunday.
The fact that you said Fox, the best character in the game for items, is bad with items, shows you’re missing a few things. XD
Fox has the fastest throw and pick-up speeds. He can get to the items faster than almost anyone. He has shine to bounce back items easily. He’s broken with items on, and broken at banned stages.
The mainstream competitive scene at Smashboards will be keeping items banned. I don’t see why you wouldn’t mimic us and do the same. It’s still luck-based since they fall in random places, and some of them are good even if they’re not deemed broken.
If you’re keeping the items that allow final smashes on…then this tournament will be a bit ridiculous since you automatically win if you get one.
You guys might be real tournament players, but I’m top-8-at-EVO-level and used to be ranked pretty high in my area. I got a lot of training from Mew2King and Magus420. >_>;
Theres one thing i can agree with Inui on and thats if theres a Large community with an established standard. it should probably be adopted. Although you play a different game inui I believe we have some common ideas on competitive game play.
for instance Evolution and SRK the biggest Japanese fighter gaming community out there is allowing button macros in console ports of these originally arcade games. I believe this is the stupidest thing i ever heard. it allows shitty players to take advantage of execution saving techniques for those who did not master the game the way it was meant to be played. now ive never been beaten by one of these players so its hard to say weather it gives them an advantage but since you play guilty gear, wouldnt you agree its easier to hit one button instead of three to roman cancel? id say so.
However if someone is throwing a console tournament they usually go with evo rulesets because its the biggest tourny in the nation. so they adopt those standards.
so i agree that Inui is right, items should be banned and dugfinn, who are you to say which items are over powered and broken and which are not. its still a game play element thats been absent from competitive play until now.
i found a flaw in the first post you might wanna do somethin about it
I played some more Brawl today, and smash balls are too broken to ever be allowed. If you get something like a landmaster on FD, it’s an automatic win.
Here’s typical rules:
-Matches will be THREE (3) Stock, Seven minute time limit.
-Double Elimination. All matches will be 2/3, with all finals being 3/5.
-All Characters will be available for use at this time.
-Items will be off.
-Team attack will be on! Life stealing is allowed. (Note: Life stealing is no longer the start button. It’s a+b on the gamecube controller. I assume this is to prevent pausing constantly!
-Smashballs will be OFF. It’s been determined that the game is broken. with them on. It turns into a turtling match and whoever gets the smash ball gets a stock advantage. It really is a shame. No one wanted them to be fair, more than I.
-Advanced Slob picks: First match is a blind pick, where the competitors will tell their character to a judge, a proceed. The Loser of the first match will then pick the next stage, then the winner may choose his character. After, the loser will choose his character and begin. The same will happen for the third match, if forced.
-Dave’s Stupid Rule Modified will be in effect. The same stage can not be played twice in a row in a single set.
-The Mage’s DQ rule is also in effect:
2 Minutes Late = Warning/Loss of first stock
4 Minutes Late = Loss of first match of set
6 Minutes Late = Loss of set
-The following tactics are banned:
Stalling under a stage.
Running away to run the time limit. (Excessively. If there’s 30 seconds, and you bail, that’s one thing. But if you waste 5 minutes, or be a jerk about it, I’m stopping the match. It’s at the judge’s discretion.)
Neutral stages on random:
Final Destination
Battlefield
Yoshi’s Story
Smashville
Lylat
Pokemon Stadium(old)

Great Sea
