Shenmue and Mass Effect have a baby: the Heavy Rain thread

Picking it up today shit better be HYPE.

This may finally be the game that makes me buy a PS3.

Also, stop with the Shenmue cock-teasing. I buried my feelings deep down for that series and don’t wanna hear a word about it unless the third one is being announced.

Bought it today, beat it today. Pretty sure endings don’t get any worse than the one I ended up getting. At least I’m compelled to play through again because of that

Heavy Rain is hype, fuck the haters.

I got the “legit” ending on the first try. Pretty hyped about that. Now time to replay it and fuck up as much as I can.

The first hour and a half is definitely very slow.

I’m pretty blown away by all the different things that could’ve happened up until the end. OOC, is the Origami Killer always the same person? Can the identity change?

I think the identity of the Ori Killer is always the same person.

About 2 hours into it…yeah not a very explosive action packed opening but it’s not as slow as I’ve heard it to be I think the setup with Ethan is warranted I actually liked how they did the red balloon scene.

fuck this game…it took away about 4 hours of my life before i realized it. I forced myself to put the controller down last night and now im at work thinking about it. I need to continue!

The first 2 hours or so went really slow for me, the whole morning at your house thing is just to teach you how the controls work, the mall scene I had already had spoiled by videos (Press X to ‘Jason!’), and the 2 follow up scenes were in the demo. So it took a long time before I got to anything exciting, and so far I’m liking it a lot.

There are a few things I don’t like so far…

Whats the point

Spoiler

In Suicide Baby, the entire scene plays out without any real options for you. It’s so linear, it’s like a cutscene, which goes against the entire premise of the game. I suppose I could have just let her die or something, but I never saw that option, it would have been done through intentionally failing the quick time events. I wanted to be like “Bitch doesn’t deserve this baby” and take it and leave. There was potential for different ways for the scene to play out, but it just didn’t. Meh. So far this seems to be one of the only real scenes I’ve seen like that, but I was hoping for more. I also don’t like how she starts answering all my questions about the origami killer, when I never even told her why I was there, just that I was a PI.

Overall I’m enjoying it, traffic scene was intense.

Crazy Guy

Spoiler

I killed the dude when he reached in his coat, wtf was he thinking? Crazy ass, he deserved it.

i finally beat the game. holy shit its awesome! i couldn’t sleep after finding out the culprit. i mean, wow really?

i just beat the game. I applaud this game:clapdos::clapdos::clapdos: . Only some very minor gripes but i loved it. Its currently raining in SoCal and i played most of the game when it was raining, it just felt right.

It was raining real heavy when I picked it up on launch, so it was actually funny.

Beat it like 2 days ago, definitely one of my favorites this gen. I suppose I got the “best” ending on my first try, everyone lived(long enough for me to get the trophy anyways). Gonna go through it again now and make the opposite choices I made on my first run. My only gripe is that the game really is kind of too easy. Even on the highest difficulty, the QTE hardly gave me a hard time, and it seems really tough to actually kill any of the characters.

Ok, just completed the game (yes, as noted, it’s raining in So Cal, which made it more awesome).

Don’t read if you don’t want things spoiled:

heavy rain

Spoiler

Ok, so in my ending I got all the main characters to the end (Shelby, Ethan, Madison, and FBI guy). On the way there I had madison figure out the identity of the killer, get locked into his room, and survived the explosion in the fridge Indiana style. Afterwards, I called the FBI guy instead of ethan (since he already knew the location, I completed all the trials). I rescued the kid, had the FBI guy save me from shelby, got Madison inside, had her warn me about them going to kill me, but I messed up on the conveyer belt and got shelby killed (if you get them all right, he lives). I’m going to go back and do that next to see the difference.

My question:

Is it ever explained why ethan has black outs, and wakes up with origami figures in his hand, with mental images of drowning people? If it’s never explained, it just seems like too big of a loophole for me. I’m really hoping it’s addressed in some path of the game.

Also, I got the nerd achievement (find all the evidence in the game), and through my analysis I came up with Blake as the killer. Is that really the only option there? It doesn’t make any sense that he’d be fingered if I had done everything right. The only hard part was getting the gold watch analysis. It almost seems like if I hadn’t called him to let him know, he would have gone ahead and fingered Blake instead of Shelby. That part is gonna take some checking out in replays.

Also, I’m wondering how the replays with going back to specific chapters work. If I go to chapter 3, make a critical choice change, then go to the finale is that choice reflected? I sure hope I dont have to play through all 8 or so hours again just to get a different ending. The only one I really want to do that for is The “Perfect Crime” achievement for basically playing to make sure the origami killer gets away with it (kill everyone off who knows me, don’t leave behind any evidence, etc). That sounds cool.

Also, for the finger scene… what method did you do? I actually grimaced thinking about making that choice in real life. I gathered everything I could find (including the rod, which hated to cauterize the wound) but I missed the disinfectant. In the end I went with the hatchet; it seemed the only way I could do it for real. Saw or gardening clippers would be terrible, knife would be too much cutting and not just a clean cut. It just seemed the best (if there could be such a thing) choice.

Last comment… how did the killer get a video chip of my son near death into the butt of the gun that he gave me 2-3 days prior?

Finished it yesterday for first time. Here is my reaction and details of my playthrough:

Heavy Rain

[details=Spoiler] Here’s the fate of my characters:

  • Jaden got enough clues, noticed the watch during the video replay, accused Shelby and knew where to go. Rescued the kid, and then killed Shelby by shooting him, twice, before he could kill Madison. At end ditched his drugs, was on a chatshow, and had a weird tank-hallucination presumably caused by combination of drugs and ARI. Did not kill the religious nut.
  • Ethan got caught by the police twice: he and Madison screwed up the escape into the subway, and then I refused to jump outside the hotel. The first time he got sprung by Jaden, second time he stayed locked up until the finale. Killed that guy for the challenge (LOVED that bit, “I’m a father too”, that was badassery). Was let out of jail and got his son back at the end.
  • Madison killed the doc, got locked up at the killer’s place, but hid in the fridge (yup, learnt that one from Indiana too!). She called Jaden to let him know the whereabouts of the kid (because Ethan was in jail), but Jaden already knew anyway. Fought with origami until Jaden arrived.
  • Shelby was shot by Jaden. What a character. When I play it now I alternate between pity and revulsion for this man. I mean, his size really becomes nauseating now you look at him as a child-killer.
  • Lauren let Shelby know what she thought of him at his grave, and spat on it. I am hoping in my current playthrough to not get her involved (by not asking any questions, not leaving card, and not going back to save her), but I’m not sure it’s going to be possible.

Ok, so realy enjoyed it. Game froze up on me once, and itw as kinda comical: Jaden was clutching his hands together because of his relapse from the drugs, and I failed a door-opening QTE. This led to him being frozen outside the door, complete with shaky ‘freakout’ camera and tense music.

Game could have done with more mini-games. ARI was perfect for that. When I first saw the ball and wall, I thought it was going to be a Breakout-style game. Juggling could have been more interesting. ARI could have had a ‘tanks’ style atari game, and if you’d played it too many times Jaden would die.

QTE episode highlight for me was the escape from the doc. Athough the whole bit was a bit cliched and silly, it was REAL tense because it was such a horrible way for Madison to go (and the screaming added to the tension). Was real glad to get her out of that one. I actually thought I’d failed and she’d been knocked out but no, was just her playing dead.

Individual QTE, however, would have to be that finger-twisting monster when you go arrest Mad Jack. If you nail it, you just cuff him up without taking any trypto, or being put in the compactor. Was real tough though, and it’s great to know I’m so familiar with the PS controller now (I used to have terrible trouble remembering square from circle and triangle but have been fluent with it since owning a PS2 post-Dreamcast). On the gamefaqs forum, a lot of peeps been saying they had to use their tongue or mouth or nose to get it, but I was glad to JUST manage it with regular hands! [/details]

So where do people see this kind of game going? I was hoping that maybe they’d find a ‘language’ for all the various analogue sweeps and buttons so that you wouldn’t need the prompts on screen. This could add to the sense of freedom, but don’t know if it would be possible really. I’m just thinking in terms of comparing this to text adventure games, where you feel like you can type in anything (and get a response for most of your attempts).

bout 6 hours into it and then…ps3 fucks up because of the internal clock and so no trophy or sign in recognition means no games.

FUCK! I was soooooooooooo into it too easily one of the best games of this generation, so far my only complaint is the kids accents are too foreign otherwise it’s nearly perfect. At least I know my data isn’t lost.

Despite some of the unfavorable comments, thoughts and reviews about this game I can honestly say that I think it’s awesome. Anyone looking for a good PS3 exclusive should definitely not let this one pass them by.

Microsoft better watch out, 'cause it will rain on them. Heavily. With rain.

Finished it for a 2nd time yesterday. MUCH better ending. With the change in just a few choices after the first hour or so, it was like playing a completely different game.

Beat it with the best possible ending:woot: HR is a masterpiece of dramatic storytelling and realistic characters it felt like playing a game version of the David Fincher films Sev7en and Zodiac which are among my favorites.

Flaw with origami killer’s identity

Spoiler

Scott being the killer is probably the best twist of any game I’ve ever played even topping Bioshock’s however, I feel cheated because in the flashback towards the end Scott kills Manfred when in fact earlier in the game when you play as Scott he’s waiting in the front of the store and discovers Manfred dead so it’s impossible for him to be in two places at once. Do we just assume he kills Manfred at some point even though we as players literally watch him every second of up until Manfred’s death?

for my second play thru i was working to get the perfect crime trophy. wow, this ending is so wrong in so many levels.

perfect crime/worst ending in the game

Spoiler

everyone dies. ethan = suicide in prison (where did the origami figures come from?), madison = leaped to death in shelbys apartment, norman = killed by mad jack, lauren = drowned, kramer = didnt give him his pills, hassan = didnt rescue, shawn mars = drowned and found in a wasteland. on the bright side, norman still lives on! via ARI
