I can’t help but feel Capcom have shot themselves in the foot somewhat.
A lot of hype for this game and a lot of talk about how they want to open the game up to new players, so, new players buy game on release, get this, head back to Game , GameStop or cex and trade it in. As it is right now at best half a game, first impressions unfortunately still count a lot…
I think it makes sense for Capcom to sell the FGC to the masses.
Capcom makes money selling games, including fighting games.
They are trying to increase the size of there customer base.
Right now the FGC is limited in number, there only so many people in the scene and once everyone in that scene buys a copy of Street Fighter V the market becomes saturated and Cpacom can’t really sell any more copies.
Now if Capcom “sells” the FGC to the masses, we get more people who are interested, the size of the FGC grows, the scene becomes less niche and Capcom gets more sales.
And it not just benefits Capcom, it benefits Mad Catz, Hori, Sanwa, Seimitsu, Sony and maybe indirectly Microsoft and Nintendo.
It also benefit the actual scene, as people age they drop out of the scene due to commitments (work or family) or lost of interest the scene needs new people to take there place.
The Scene gets more people we stop being a niche, start becoming mainstream, you start see more money flowing in and now Evo is on ESPN instead of just Twitch, people don’t look at you weird having a stick in public, the TSA don’t get as confused seeing your stick in your carryon at the airport (as they know what it is finally). Capcom gets more money to invest in new products and games, and the manufactures make better sticks.
First impressions count unless your game is too big to fail. Vanilla Diablo 3 got absolutely shit on by everybody for similar reasons(content, balance, servers disconnecting, too streamlined from the last game. Peep the Metacritic user reviews.
Game not only sold millions, not only retained a huge fanbase, but it still had niggas lining up for Reaper of Souls $40 expansion. AND the console port.
Street Fighter is one of those franchises so big, with hype that’s gonna build every month with new features, characters, modes, content, hype twitch streams watched by hundreds of thousands…you don’t need to worry about poor week one reactions.
Yes but as already discussed the fgc is still comparably small when compared to other genres and Capcom by releasing this game have certainly hurt the street fighter community in relation to getting any new players, why should they wait ? Instead a future evo champ may have traded it in for another game.
I mean you don’t go buy a Big Mac from McDonalds walk half way out and then notice they only gave you the bun and a piece of lettuce for the staff to turn around and say, don’t worry the burger is coming in Two months.
In June, when hundreds of thousands of people are watching hype SFV action on Sunday and the replays that show up on IGN/ESPN/Gamespot/etc, they hit up Amazon and buy the game, and the game will have story mode, challenges, Battle Lounge w/spectator mode, fixed servers, lot of DLC to buy.
I hope you are right as I’ve spent my money and don’t want that hard earned cash to go to waste… But I do feel that Capcom kinda owe us a bit, like maybe a few free costumes etc…
I don’t know. I feel this is a lot of over worrying. A future evo champ would find the core game fun and play regardless. The people who drop this game because of lacking content don’t have the mentality to be an Evo champ. They’re just looking to have a good casual time. You have to find a way to make SF fun. Just like people find a way to make DAT MADDEN one on one fun even if they’re not hardcore. If you’re not looking to one on one someone in this game as your prime directive, then you are not an evo champ potential.
Will this mess up some casual players getting their first shot at getting 0-2’d at Evo and getting to meet Daigo and Maximilian for the first time, probably. Stopping the future Evo Champ? Hell nah. That guy will bite and eat at whatever is in the core game and there are probably some random guys out there who may just play it and say “this really fit me” and then they become that guy. Don’t need a bunch of single player fluff to be that guy. I’m talking to guys I’ve never even heard of at my Dad’s work who are loving the game even with the issues.
There are also people that aren’t FGC hardcores that still like the core of the game. Not everyone who isn’t in the FGC is a single player casual fluff man. Some people like to casually bust heads and be King of the Couch.
It be a different story if the game was like…bad. Like people just hated playing SFxT(on top of its other issues), so they went to something else, like SF4. But like Destiny and Diablo, a lot of people really liked the experience of playing the thing, and that’s gonna sustain it for years. There’s no SF4 alternative for people to go back to. Capcom is putting that game to bed. No new NR games this year. T7 still like a year and a half away from a console port, knowing Namco’ ol dumbass. KI and Smash are on completely different consoles/communities.
Its pretty much the de-facto fighter of the year. And like I said, its gonna get better with updates, fixes, new characters, modes, hype streams, etc. I mean this is a game that’s gonna last years. Don’t put too much stock on day one, this isnt just another AAA game people play and forget about in a week. Capcom gonna be updating this shit for like the next half decade. Nobody’s gonna fuckin’ remember the game not having spectator mode at launch a year from now, lol. Now when that hype Skullomania DLC trailer shows up on IGN’s front page next year.
Of course the game will be fine in the long run. From a competitive aspect it’s already looking great and it’s only going to get better as more characters get released. I just cannot comprehend why they thought the release as it is was a good idea, considering they were apparently trying to appeal to a wider and more casual audience. The fact that the game is being slaughtered right now by casual gamers and popular youtubers (youtubers not liking this is really bad for business) is completely unsprising. It’s as if everyone could see this coming except Capcom.
It also doesn’t really help that the only fleshed out part of your game, i.e. online, is also lacking features and not even functioning correctly. The game will not do as well as it potentially could have because they have shot themselves in the foot right out of the gate.
Capcom had a lot riding on this Capcom Pro Tour thing. This shit needed to come out when it did cuz they planned this whole 500k+ hype tour out a year in advance, so they needed the core game to be solid and in hands ASAP. They knew any bad negative buzz will be lost in time like tears in the rain as they get the rest of the shit together and the hype builds up over the months leading to EVO and eventually Capcom Cup. And like I said earlier, they’re pretty much the only really big new fighter for the best selling console(and PC) this year. They gonna ride this out, we all gon ride this bumpy start out and then forget about it in a month or so.
I don’t get it. You plan to buy the game, so you clearly want to play it, but you will wait a “physical content bundle” to save a few bucks? Let’s say that instead of paying $60 plus $30 for the game and DLC, you’ll pay $60 for an upgraded disc version that also has the 6 additional characters. This means that you value all the fun you’ll have from now until this physical content bundle at less than $30. If that is the case, why bother? You say that you would “love for Capcom to turn this around”, but you don’t even seem to want to play the game. Very confusing stuff imo.
Even RE6 solid 6+ million copies. 2 million of those coming well after launch and everybody had shit on it. Another case of negative first impressions meaning jack shit if your franchise is big enough.
Street Fighter was never gonna be the next LoL. If that’s your indication of success, Capcom was gonna fail even if it had a fully-feature Neathrealm studios like mode. Fighting games are too difficult, too personal to ever be Dota2/LOL/Counter-Strike and team games like that.
And that’s fine. SF has a unique personality and sense of history, and SFV is gonna keep that going. The game will still sell millions, and Capcom’s gonna make bank on character DLC month after month, year after year. Streams will still be as popular as they were with SF4. People will still get sponsored, hype videos will still get made, casuals will still see hype moments and pick up the game with everybody telling them “oh yeah they fixed the game now, its great!”
SFV will be fine. Don’t worry about that.
I see this kind of reasoning from casual players all the time. Like with SF4, there was “I wanna play, but I’m gonna wait for the Super/Ultra/AE/GOTY/DLC version”. Like…it doesn’t work that way, bro. Its a multiplayer game. You’re not getting a better value here on some single player game everybody plays the same way. Buy it at launch and get dozens/hundreds of hours of enjoyment. Enjoy the ride.
But in a way, that just further prove my point. “Smart” casual consumers will wait till the Season One SF4 pack to drop, and give Capcom their money anyway, and the game will be more fixed/fully featured by then. The people who said “aw man, there’s no mode where I can play the CPU for 7 levels and get a 30 second cutscene means this isn’t shit!” are either gonna buy the game later anyway or weren’t exactly future EVO champions anyway.
It has nothing to do with blowing anyone. The main purpose of fighting game is Human vs Human. If you are bitching cause you cant fight 8 CPU brain dead drones that just read you buttons on day 1 maybe fighting games isnt for you.
Capcom laid out a plan for everyone to see, no one was blinded sided by anything.
Excuse me for not being part of the internet thats upset at everything over nothing.
