Variations are more closely attributed to A3 isms than CVS2 grooves. Believe NRS said they were inspired specifically by A3. Which is why characters gain like actual new moves and such and not just like roll/defensive option/super stuff.
So basically they would work because A3 already is the basis of variations in fighting games. New normals per ism, certain specials only doable in certain isms, V ism allowing you to use close/prox normals anywhere etc.
MVCI was still pulling tourney numbers that shouldn’t even be possible during IJ2’s shine. It got its chance to shine. Plus crack always comes back any way.
IJ2 died slightly slower than Marvel did.

Its so goofy that Commander Jesse plays Sakura in 4 but plays sim in 5.
I always love seeing how people drastically switch characters in new games. Kind of how fuudo went from Fei Long to Mika. Wacky changes.
