We’re you charging buttons with a stick and proper ergonomics? After rearranging my control scheme I could store juri fireballs all day.
Her VT1 used to be kind of shitty because the opponent could mash jab and it would beat out slide, elbow, flip and if she backdashed the jab would whiff and the neutral would be reset. Even worse the opponent could just mash super and tag Karin out of all those options and would even catch her backdash. Her only option in these scenarios was yolo palm.
Now that her backdash recovery is a lot better she can whiff punish mashed jabs with st.mp and completely avoid supers. It’s a legit threat now. I think most Karin’s will be back to VT1 this season.
Yeah I’m on stick. Good point about rearranging buttons though, I didn’t really consider that. None of the button hold characters really grabbed me enough to make me want to put that kind of time in with em.
I don’t think he’d be OP, but I think he would be a real top tier. I still don’t think he’d be better than Akuma who is my main. As for what kind of fireball. It doesn’t even have to be a Ken or Sakura fireball. They could give him a Oni like fireball that only travels half screen and that would be enough to make him a very good well rounded threat.
They would definitely nerf the recovery though and probably make cr. MK > fireball not combo at max range anymore. But having a more legit fireball would be a lot more helpful to him than that. I’d love to see it happen because it would fit my play style. But I think Capcom really doesn’t want to make some of the other shoto’s(especially Ryu) obsolete.
Right now I just pepper Kage players with fireballs(as Ryu) at his max V Skill range and AA DP when they jump. They struggle so hard to deal with it. Even a half screen fireball would completely solve this problem and I’d lose the fireball war from full screen because he has Shaku.
More FANG legitimacy.
I was messing around with Laura this afternoon and jesus how does anyone use a character this slow?
But my 09er friends say that everyone plays the same way in street fighter 5!!! You can’t express yourself in sf5!!
Will you really should try harder. You make my bitching look weak. I need you to hurry up and surpass me!!!
So I ran into the GM Cammy and pretty much gave up at the Vs screen. He won the first set doing a raggo non EX DP to clip me because I was spamming B.HK too much. I knew o was flow charting really bad so I decided to ease up. Try my best to play to Kolin’s strength. So basically spam st.HP.
Man oh man I was in the corner against this fucker and I’m like “take the throw” this dude through me 3 times in a row and I was scared for me life. Then he walked forward like a milli inch I hit cr.LP cuz 3f boyz and now I’m 300 LP richer.
Fundamentals
Are there any scumbag round stealing characters that have good neutral or at least can move decently fast?
Was waiting for someone else to say something.
I’m gree with all the stuff he’s been told so far. I would add:
- More yolo fireballs. Some to get jumped. The purpose is to trade some damage jumpin wise (get dj to jump) so that he’s looking for the fireball to jump, at which point Akhos can more easily dash in at neutral. It’s more important for a mixup character to get started, than for a mixup character to shore up their neutral. Giving up HP is something all mixup characters tend to have to do… outside maybe ibuki cause she can just yolo air EX Kunai.
- St.lk to punish Falke v skill, is weak. Need to learn the matchup so that he’s hyper aware of the spacing so Falke doesn’t get that shit at unsafe ranges. He should definitely be punishing with st.lk xx hp DP. It’s scary because if the spacing is off, he’s eating shit. But the spacing shouldn’t be too ambiguous with how much DJ was abusing it (seems like DJ was trying to teach him to punish it, without perhaps letting him know it)
- better walk back pressure when on offense. It’s fucking scary to do, but walk back pressure on offense is great for stopping things like random OPTION SELECT timed jabs. Basic “trick” that punk and lots of top players use is something like cr.lk,cr.lp (blocked) walk back and do a medium or heavy timed to wiff punish the opponents delayed jab. This will get the opponent to stay in spot or walk backwards and can open them up to your lows or shimmies depending on which defense they more opt to go for.
There’s a strong mixup between whether you will walk forward or backward during a pokestring. Punk does this all day. Granted he has Karin who is great at this, but this in limited ways can be applied to almost all characters.
Punks use of Karin cr.mk:
After a blocked cr.mk punk will “usually” back off. The cr.mk is either -3 or -4. When the opponent blocks it they usually want to take their turn back and punk walks out of range of that turn and wiff punishes them. Watch damn near any of his games and loom at his cr.mk usage and you will see this. But he also alternates it with Karin’s st.hk… but why would he do such a slow ass move when he just got his -4 or whatever move, blocked? Because he has already trained the opponent that he will move defensively after a blocked cr.mk and many opponents will tend to try and take a bigger walk forward there before pressing a button… so they don’t get wiff punished… and then POP he CC’s them. He does this a lot.
You can do the same with ken with something like near max range cr.mp, walk back, timed wiff punish with st.hp xx run and if the st.hp clips a limb you just get the run automatically. This is also why punk gets so many walk up cr.mp. People get used to him walking backwards so they start to think they are safe after blocking, but then he switches it up and walks forward, then people are like wtf and try to press a button and he counter hits it. Once people get used to this entire back away/ walk up cr.mp/cr.mk sequence is when punk gets to just walk up to people and shimmy them or throw them for free. He’s training the opponent to react the way he wants them to. You can do the same with ken, if you put your mind to it and come up with different poke schemes and strategies to setup your dashins and wiff punishes.
4. It’s already been mentioned, but think of kens jump as a poke. Seriously.
Use it smartly but don’t elminate it from your thinking. Same with sweep.
5. Against people that like to fuzzy walk, cr.mp,cr.lk> forward dash can work well. Better players will notice themselves get hit and end up blocking which can give you a free dash in after the cr.lk hits their stand block.
Once the opponent starts to “see” this string you can further mix it up if you want by noticing how they deal with the string:
Start to low block more = you walk up into stagger pressure more
Start to interrupt your dash with a button = do st.hk or st.hp after the cr.lk
Etc etc etc… just get your offense more varied with slightly fewer hitconfirms and slightly more blockstrings that are designed to elicit a response that you can counter or that allow you to train the opponent to react how you want them to. DJ should be good practice for this sinc ehes not running away from you all day but instead just trying to maintain spacing.
6. Something that you really need a better option against is DJ’s neutral jump spam. It allows him to cover jump/dash way to easily and as long as you have no real answer for it, getting W’s against him is going to be hard because he can basically use it like an oldschool dp/reversal. Any hint of special danger and he gets to just neutral jump and cover a bunch of options. Can’t allow him to get away with that, but that may be easier said than done, you should lab it out if you want to stop it and start to get some W’s in.
I just feel so fucking lost again
The characters either don’t fit, have certain aspects I like but my style isn’t how you’re supposed to play them, they fit but there’s certain aspects that aggravate me to the point of not enjoying using them, or I hate their overall character/design too much to even bother (granted that’s only Kage in this instance)
Everyone’s enjoying themselves and seems to have found what they like and I’m still kicking around in the dark 'cause nothing clicks
And I don’t want to drop the game 'cause I wanna play and talk about it with you cool people
what were your requirements for a character again?
- Watch Jones arcade.
He’s got an interesting mix of yolo and neutral and is a great overall ken.
Forgot to say this in the wall of text above. Of course try and emulate any specific things your see him do a lot. At least to get a feel for why he does certain things.
Fast walkspeed, good fireball, good normals with reach, good anti-airs, strong damage off of a punish alongside good damage in general, some kind of reversal, isn’t a charge character and doesn’t require button holding for specials
Basically someone who’d be busted in this game and therefore doesn’t exist
You either need to stick with Menat then or Play G.
Well I don’t think a character who checks all these categories exists so we’ll need to compromise in places. I think Menat is the closest you’ll get to this.
What exactly do you not like about charge characters? I ask because Chun checks a lot of these boxes. Great walkspeed, good normals, good anti-airs, reversal. Her FB is ok considering the rest of her kit though I’ll admit her damage is on the low side.
Edit: People here may laugh, but if you can get over his super poor defense I think you would like Vega.
learn to love charge characters and pick Guile, he checks all those requirements.
Seriously, you folks need to pick Guile.
The closest thing I can think of with that description is Juri, but she’d fit very loosely and she’s only arguably good in a bunch of things (her fireball most of all).
Either that or G if you’re willing to give up on good walkspeed, but you say you didn’t like him.
You either need to stick with Menat then or Play G.
Tried G and hated it
What exactly do you not like about charge characters?
I hate not being able to walk forward and do normal xx special as a whiff punish, or walk forward normal xx special for safe pressure (like Ed’s crmk xx flicker or Ken’s one-hit confirms)
Coming from Smash, having any aspect of my movement ability locked away to do any kind of move is just an absolute no
Why don’t you use Ed?
