SFV Lounge: Menat BUFFED, F2P SFV coming, CCCC COMBO BREAKERS coming

I would argue almost all the character up through CS1 are well designed (aesthetically) save Mu-12. And while there are some good designs after that, many of the subsequent character additions lean really hard into anime tropes, and not in a good way.

In fact most of the original BB characters are subversions of their normal trope.

The good news continue

My favorite part about this discussion was me telling people before Skullgirls came out that aesthetics are really important to fighting game players. Then all of the Skullgirls stans started shitting on me about how looks don’t matter and blah blah blah.

Fast forward some years and the aesthetics of a game are still incredibly important even in the overall Fighting Game Scenes. KoF 14 and MvCi say hi to all the people who were wrong.

I just don’t get why “weeb” has such a negative connotation

I mean you have a hard working scientist who rides around on a scooter and bashes people with rocket powered hammers

How is that a bad thing

My biggest problem with B.B. besides that no ones plays it, is that i hate games where characters are designed to have weaknesses or flaws. This is the exact opposite of mike z style designing, which I agree with.

Characters should generally be all around, but have stronger traits here and there than others. This way they can still differ but no character is straight up boned by one stupid thing, like can’t deal with projectiles, or has no mixup, or builds meter super slow, or doesn’t have range or doesn’t have lows etc etc

Every character I tried on B.B. to a certain extent has a “deal breaker” designed into their character as a flaw.

It’s just dumb design to me.

So not invincible reversals, for example guile’s flash kick now, what does that mean? Does it mean that any jump in beats it? Does it mean that it always trades? Does it mean that it depends who presses the button faster, etc?

It’s not “bad” so much as it doesn’t have widespread mainstream appeal. I’m (mostly) joking around when I call shit “weeb trash” but a lot of people don’t care for that aesthetic. Hell i remember growing up hearing my mom whine about how she didn’t like “Jap-a-mation” every time I watched some shit off Toonami.

Like compare BB to Mortal Kombat. The latter is probably the most popular fighting game in the west and it’s probably the polar opposite of BlazBlue in terms of character design.

Okay real talk.

It don’t like Kokonoe. However, its not because she’s a sassy half-cat (grimalkin) scientist (That part is cool). Its because she comes from the sub-type of anime fighter characters who’s move-set is just a bunch of random nonsense. Every button and special she pull another random object out of her ass and hits you with it. It winds up looking like the Tasmanian devil plowing the a Toy-R-Us (rest in peace). I would like it better if she just had the Drill hammer, and then used the Drill Hammer and kept the random garbage to a minimum.

It has no Invincible frames (until frame 3 usually), which means its completely vulnerable during that period and will be stuffed by another hitbox.

In practice non-invincible reversals usually don’t function like reversals at all because they lack the invulnerability to plow through moves.

As a side note, other fighting games feature non-invulnerable reversals that instead have 1 frame startup, and those still function well as reversals in most situations.

Funnily enough that’s just more of the reason I liked her, I like silly things like that. Like how she just pulls a giant cat wrench out of nowhere and beats you over the head with it. But that’s just me.

At least you know she’s a cool character so I’ll give the battle design complaint a pass~

Honestly that’s one of the things that BBTag has put on its head. Every character in that game has an invincible reversal. All of them. But they all still manage to play completely different to each other.

So now we have proof of concept that you can have a highly offensive game with all characters with reversals and good anti airs, while still maintaining an unique gameplan.

Makes you wonder about wtf is going on with SF5.

Skullgirls looks cool tho

Ok so then it depends on the jump in? If it has invincible frames starting at frame 3 then guile has to flash kick early for it to be successful correct?

Skullgirls looks cool as fuck but its also a bunch of weird girls fighting each other with weird shit. I like the game but I know if I showed that game to my coworkers I’d be judged in the wrong way lol.
