The only games I’ve watched at high level are SF4 and SFV. I don’t find SFV boring when I watch it, but:
I find it really forgettable. I can’t think of any specific, memorable matches.
I don’t have the same compulsion to watch it the way I did SF4.
I do not care about any of the characters usually played in Top 8. Of the characters I play, 3 out of 4 do pretty much nothing at high level.
Also I think having the big announcements that typically happen after these events sort of undermines the hype of the matches themselves. Like for me Capcom Cup is more about next season news than whoever wins.
If I watch these days its probably only EVO or Capcom Cup, and the latter I’ll probably only watch Top 8/Top 16.
To add to the viewership thing, I have trouble watching most 3D games because all the characters seems so similar. I know this isn’t true, but to an ignorant viewer like me, the differences between all the Tekken characters (for example) and their combos are so subtle they may as well not exist.
The only 3D game that gets away from this is soul calibur.
RE Alex looks cool but the method they chose for these outfits is disgusting March 15-April 12 just to complete it lol this shit is not ok man wtf SF4 costumes rly spoiled me
He has good enough normals to fight people midscreen. Can get one bar of meter through fireballs and pokes which then turns online his jab xx EX Rush into whatever you need. The character doesnt even need to rush to presidential levels. Hell he gets a lot out of level 1.
Skill to me. I’m a technical/execution stuff lover and I also appreciate good reads. The only thing I miss about SF4 is convincing people to try emulate the pros combos. In V doing stuff isn’t hard to do, but it’s impossible to replicate a pro mindset. I remember people spending hours trying to replicate Daigo sho FADC Ultra during Vanilla days, to me those little things makes people more involved into improving themselves.
Personally I have no problem with hard to execut stuff in fighting games. What I dislike is when fundamental things are made arbitrarily hard, and SF4 is the poster child for that.
Basic example, I have no problem with Sako ridiculous E Ryu combos, but the fact that Rufus basically requires a 1 frame link to function is silly
Getting that 1 frame link down is all Muscle and timing memory = time spent on playing the game. Nobody is born getting that 1 frame link down easily, you have to INVEST the time.
Even the most talented need to invest a lot of time. And when you get it down even the worst players will execute it right most of the time even under pressure (due to muscle memory). Broly legs ( a pro -disabled player) was executing the hardest commands with his mouth with chun li. It’s another reason by the way why it’s important to stick to one character.
Another popular method is plinking, which is rolling your fingers over the buttons 1 frame apart. This means you get an extra frame to execute the move.
Even the most basal, fundie players that bitch about sf5’s execution leniency used to plink in sf4.
