The case for Ryu being bad is not only because of his own faults but because it feels like so many characters were designed specifically just to counter him. Guile, Nash, Juri, Sim, Rashid, Falke, Menat, and more. They either out zone him easily or can just sit back and get around his fireballs or nullify it easily.
It was a frustrating year in S2. My fireball feels useless, my normals get out reached, and then I finally get put in the blender because I missed a AA or throw a bad fireball. But when I finally get a hit it goes no where. Why? Because my opponent was crouching lol.
Trying to play perfect was too hard. And I was not interested in being one those crazy dash happy Ryu’s that somehow makes that style work so I was done with the character by Summer of last year. A fireball and DP isn’t good enough. The DP is nice, but he has too many flaws overall.
I recall having a lounge battle against a friend who uses Rog and somehow I was able to stuff a lot of his moves basically by spamming stLK a lot, and it kept working even once he started trying to crush counter me. I even interrupted an EX straight once.
That was against a Super/Ultra Platinum Rog, I strongly doubt that’s going to work at higher levels.
The retardo corner carry stuff in this game sucks because it takes the big stage thing about SFIV and V and says the stages aren’t big anymore once it happens. You would need like to land a custom combo to land the corner carry some of the basic stuff in this game does.
Bonchan pretty much did hit the corner in near all of those rounds vs Rog, he just found a good spot to like jump forward out or poke back and regain control.
I feel the same way and have said so plenty of times. It’s less a ryu issue and more of a “why do characters have these moves that require no meter that just shit on fireballs” kind of issue.

This v skill that v skill etc etc etc… shit is pretty dumb and since i use fireball characters as well I definitely feel it.
There was a time where I was pretty free to even like the Ultra Plat/Low Diamond Rogs. The character just perfectly plays against the way she plays so the character will beat you somehow unless you beat the player near 100 percent. I’ve gotten a little better at it now where I can actually 2 0 Diamond Rogs now. If they’re Super Diamond and up I’m proably going to lose at least a match at the minimum.
I think Ryu could deal with the fireball deficiencies if he had something else going for him besides his dash. People complain about it, but really its his only actual comparatively good tool. He has his dash and good damage if he lands a clean jump. Thats it.
One thing I really hate about Capcom since the SF4 days is their laziness about giving characters a move that’s specific to that game. Instead of being more creative they seem to fall back on “well lets just give them a anti fireball move”. SF4 was chock full of anti fireball Ultra’s and the focus system meant that they didn’t even have to take real damage to stop you from throwing fireballs.
Now SFV is chock full of anti fireball V Skills that will just help your opponent gain VT faster than you will. Whenever I see people talk about wanting new CA’s I’m disgusted. I’m not interested in seeing half the cast gain a new anti fireball CA because Capcom will again probably take the easy way out with how they design most of the new Supers.
BTW it’s ironic to me that of all the anti fireball VS, Ryu’s is the worse IMO. So he can’t even shit on his own fireball as much as everyone else.
Off ryu or sfv topic complaining, do you get like a ton of counterhits on people with Sagat doing stand lp into stand mp? I get the frame data standard sfv 3f trap part of it but I’m thinking theres more to it. Like it naturally catches peoples crouch tech rhythm.
This is definitely not a game for one to play when they are suffering with mental fatigue.
The amount of loses I took today is just ridiculous. At least I managed to collect myself towards the end and brought the account back to super gold after dropping to almost 4600 lp.
The amount of laggy matches doesn’t help either. It isn’t fun to have your jab eaten after a jump in so shot can be blocked and you can’t kill the opponent with CA.
I’ve hit diamond with Sakura recently and started thinking the only bad things about her are extremely short normals, combo consistency at max ranges, and oki on KDs. She may not have that SFV unga to say fuck neutral, but her walk speed makes up for it. Imo she only has 4 matchups(akuma, Cody, rashid, birdie) where she actually struggles. Everything else is hella winnable.
Feel like peeps rate her so low because she ain’t easy mode and no top player representation at tournaments. Sakura is a few buffs or qol changes from being a solid mid to mid high.
Edit: Forgot her AA is real suspect. At the point where I go for air to air or air grab.
If it makes you feel better, I’m only at ~4200-4300 on my PSN account where I exclusively play Chun in ranked. Last day I played i dipped back into Ultra Silver before starting to climb again.
