Cammy and Karin… at leas what punk does with them, don’t really play alike much at all. The upclose game is similar, as are most characters in sf5 unfortunately. The big difference is the neutral. Karin has CC and v skill for the ground game. Cammy lacks the v skill and CC but has better AA and divekick… but punk didn’t have AA problems outside demonflips so Cammy doesn’t really bring much specifically to him as a player that Karin didn’t. The only thing punk really gains from Cammy now is that she wasn’t badly nerfed. But she’s really not his actual style in an all encompassing way.
Basically Karin is ryu and Cammy is ken. There’s a big enough difference between those characters than even ryu and ken so being good at one doesn’t auto transfer to the other at a super high level.
Even then you are expected as a top player to find something that fits your skills and makes you strong. They can’t make a game that suddenly removes your ability to place top spots. You’re most likely not as much of a top player as you thought if some numbers and hit boxes change around and you are out of the CPT game.
Itazan found Abi, J.Wong found Menat, there’s something to keep you clicking if you are of that level.
There are lots of character specialists out there that rise and fall with there characters tier listing, good and bad top and bottom. Punk might be one of those players, might not.
It just pains me specifically when companies go out and deliberately nerf a players playstyle. I’ve seen it twice now. First time with duckator after he ran SG for a few years, second time with punk. I’m sure there are others that are in the same ballpark, but it’s pretty annoying especially considering that there was no one doing much with Karin outside of punk.
Harumy went in. I watch her matches on Youtube sometimes. She always wears the red dress. Sucks she had to take out my boy Hsien, but that’s how it goes. Waiting for Gentleman Thief now.
I can agree with the idea that they should just not change characters to the point where people dont feel like they can be themselves with the character anymore. Especially since he was the one creating a lot of the stuff she was doing. Stuff like minus 4 s.MK doesn’t blow the character up like people were putting out, but it’s not the shit that makes Ryu fight her much better either.
Ive never really watched punks Cammy other than when he sometimes subbed her for Karin in tournies. But as I said… this is NOT the same character as Karin:
Watch punk in this set… he jumps in how many times? He was jumping in like a madman… he almost never jumps forward with Karin.
He was also dashing in like a madman and gett8ng clipped for it. You also take note that with Karin he doesn’t dash forward all that much, not that he NEVER does it, just doesn’t tend to do it a lot.
Now… there’s reasons for this:
With Karin his ground game is decent behind st.mk…l well Cammy has it as well so let’s move on.
Karin’s st.mk with punks footsie ability makes people… want to walk away from him or try to counter poke him. THATS where Karin’s v skill comes in. Right when people try to counter poke or throw out some far ranged shit or walk forward or whatever, he hits them with v skill or makes them block it and gets close but not punishable.
Cammy doesn’t have this. She has to divekick in. Her v skill at high level is useless.
Moving on… punks wiff punishing with Cammy also isn’t nearly as good since he does have Karin’s st.hp or st.hk to wiff punish with. He would have to use Cammy st.hp which iirc is not great on block, or her sweep which is punishable on block unlike Karin’s st.hp and st.hk
Another smaller thing is Cammy doesn’t have an overhead and Cammy damage off of a confirmed cr.mk is less than Karin’s and Cammy has less explosive damage than Karin has.
So, these characters other than their confirmable cr.mk and strong upclose options aren’t all that alike. Cammy is a character that overwhelms you with her jumpins and divekicks and has lower damage to compensate. Karin is a high damage ground character with not so great AA options to compensate.
Punk going to Cammy and still using Cammy makes me want to go back in the lab with Karin and Juri respectfully. I don’t think I’ve clicked training mode all year.
I’m not surprised either. I’m just pointing out the obvious differences. Saying a switch to Cammy from Karin is natural and easy or some such and one should be able to get the same results more or less… is like saying kaz or NL or xiaohai could switch to Karin from Cammy and expect to achieve the same results… or someone switching from Alex to gief or vice versa.
Switching from gief to abby however is a no brainer because outside of some AA situations and the vortex, abby is just a much better character and easier to grasp… that’s not to say ANY gief could switch and be as successful or more… the characters do have some decent differences like gief has a more turtly patient style and one mistake can get you vortexed and lose the round… but abby has a more stable gameplan over the long run and better range.
In the end it doesn’t matter if the transition is easy or hard. As a sponsored player with suits looking at you you gotta get it done. Daigo had his thing with playing gimped Ryu for far too long but he eventually manned up to Guile and got shit done. Punk gonna have to find his character or squad and get shit done. Get more than 81 CPT points. Especially for someone that nearly won Evo. The alpha should be able to get back to being the alpha because he’s the alpha that’s what he needs to be able to accomplish.
Definitely Karin specific nerfs were made to affect Punk playstyle,Punk just wasn’t able to adapt to them. More than st.mk is st.hp what fucked up his neutral, even if the move gets CC properties is -5 now. Really? EX Tenko dmg lowered, VT1 duration shortened, corner mix-ups removed, CC nerfed being an additional hit, no oki and throw loops removed. The meta switched from a footsies battle first to a VT comebacks festival and Karin can’t keep up with the rest of the top tiers. As a player, Punk’s fault is not being able to adapt and commit to one or two characters sticking with them, instead he rely too much on his natural talent. I’m not too afraid about this period of him nor he has to, even Daigo and Infiltration were nowhere to find sometimes during SFV lifecycle. Even people never-ending trolling maybe affected his confidence, but he’s only 19 so he have time to bounce back on track.
