Yeah, they basically copied and pasted Alpha 3 Cody into SF4. Same with the Third Strike characters. SFV they are changing up everyone except the world warriors.
The having to be crafty on defense thing isn’t too far off from IV Cody any way. Remains to be seen how viable bad spray is, but it’s something. V Skill throw invincible frame one so that’s pretty much like using a shoto LP DP to beat throws except does more damage and builds v gauge. You’ll have to make more specific choices to get out of stuff, but considering his neutral seems worth it overall.
V Skill seems to be working well to deal with gapped pressure or botched meaties also.
Wait, you can combo bad sand on counter hit?
Yeah it’s plus 4 on counter hit so you’d get a jab.
V-Skill is great for blowing up common blockstrings that go into lows (Akuma stuff into cr.MK for example).
It gets even crazier vs Ibuki.
Pretty much every normal medium block string I do with Ibuki (s.MK, s.MP / s.MP, s.LK, / s.MP, s.MP / s.MP, c.MP) all get blown up by block reversal V Skill. Can’t even do s.MP, c.MK to try and catch the supposed lower body vulnerability as he’s already airborne by then.
Pretty much like Birdie. Finally has issues when he’s on his ass but as long as he’s on his feet its going to be a pain forcing him to respect your strings. You’ll need to bait his V Skill a lot when pressuring which unfortunately gives him room to stuff you with plus 3 s.LK and start shit himself.
Beat SFV Arcade mode with Cody. Marlowe is thicc.
This shit goes in. Round 2 is another remix of main theme.
Cody not only looks much better up close, but he’s fun. I wasn’t all that hyped looking at certain footage of him, but actually playing him is entirely different. People talked about how this character was ruined and I don’t agree one bit. I’m loving his design.
This new Cody is the shyt.
Rell Shyt
Yeah jail boys will talk some shit about him, but if people wanted a good new DLC character he’s here. I just like that he has more Final Fight stuff and he controls the newtral well.
They on some Comanche shit, fuck em.
can also use vskill to blow up Rashid’s normal into tornado.
Hi all, loving the new Cody - who woulda thought huh?
Here are my like…first impressions after 3~ hours, I was streaming but it’s making my games laggy so I had to stop.
So. Cody in V plays like a mixture of characters, if I had to sum him up using characters in this roster, it would probably be Bison/Ryu, and you would even throw a little bit of Nash in there. He’s very slow yet he’s oppressive on the ground. He seems to want to play at midrange using Tornado Sweeps to establish his core game, with some of his longer normals like st.hk, st.mp and st.lk being used for whiff punish opportunities and buffering.
His anti-air game fresh outta the box is incredible, I’m not used it yet but st.hp, HK ruffian and v-skill cover a very large area of the screen and v-skill shuts down MULTIPLE jump arc altering moves.
Examples being but not limited to - Cammy divekicks, Akuma VT air fireballs, Ken air tatsu, Vega walldive, Bison devil reverse, Necalli divekick.
His damage output and counter-hit game isn’t quite what it used to be, but in Vs standards he has one of the highest non-counter hit damage outputs in the game, and his counter-hit game when upclose is also really impressive. St.hp really brings his damage numbers up due to st.mk linking into it naturally and cr.mp on counter-hit.
His wake-up game is pretty limited, your only options are Bad Spray(3f), V-Reversal or super. But I don’t think this makes him inately weak, he doesn’t have a wakeup game yet his ground game is ridiculous in trade. I did test Bad Spray though, it isn’t actually 3f start-up, but it would come out on the same frame a 3f would on quickrise, so he DOES have some form of 3f.
His mobility is a little bit of an issue for me right now as I don’t have the strongest fireball game, so him being slow and easy to space jumps on makes his fireball game SUPER punishing if you’re not good with them. His dashes have pretty visible animations so you can’t be cheeky with forward dashes, and his backdash may as well not exist tbh.
His V-Triggers are RIDICULOUS. VT2 is really strong, but from what I’ve tested so far(opinion here not final) his VT2 setplay only seems to become legitimate in the corner, and I’m not too much of a fan of the corner being a necessity. But his corner carry game is bonkers, so it’s not too big of a deal.
EDIT
See I’m wrong already Twitter tech is pouring out, but midscreen setplay only comes from his command grab.
VT1 is more stable overall, but has less bang. It works anywhere on screen, and buffs his blockstrings/oki slightly. St.mp and cr.mp become +4 oB during VT1, and st.hp gets an absolutely ridiculous hitbox. His rekka move in VT1 drains wayyyy too much VT meter though, I think just sticking to using the knife throw and ruffian kicks is a better idea for combos.
Overall, I think he’s an easy top 15 pick, and depending on what tech comes out within the next week, pretty easily debated top 10 character if his VT tech becomes insane.
Cody’s story is great. Also he has cool combos.
Cody’s twitter tech is gonna be interesting
I saw that Akuma nerf and freaked out at work. But thankfully it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. My concern was more about getting punished after a blocked st. MK. Excluding super only a few characters can really make me scared of doing it after a block string like cr. MP > st. MK.
It does suck not being able to do that block string for free anymore against certain characters. I can hit confirm after just 1 cr. MP. But that takes more concentration which I won’t always have during a match. But then again I can use that to my advantage as well and space it to whiff punish any Ryu or Sak that might be trying to punish Akuma’s blocked st. MK.
What up?
Cody’s animations look terrible. Hope the dude is fun.
I managed to buy a game less poorly thought out than some of the SF5 shit. I’m impressed by how bad it is at time.
Anybody know if Next Level is letting Cody rock on wednesday? I know WNF is, just wanna make sure locals are on the same standards used in other places.
Momochi’s day 1 verdict is that Cody is weak, he said he’d prefer to play Ken competitively, I think. Not perfect as translating Japanese.
So, no more easy corner pressure with akuma.
If i am honest, it was too good. But this change makes him a lot weeker, especially against 4f characters.
