Overall I’ve found UNIST to be really fun and accessible, especially by anime standards. The game itself teaches you a shitload and the pace isn’t so fast or overwhelming that you can’t pretty much immediately see why you are losing (even if it may require lab time to sort out the particulars).
It is anime so ranked is dead as AF and the player lobbies are shark tanks but even then it is pretty fun. At least in my experience it takes a decent number of exchanges to lose a round in this game so even against really good players you can learn enough to not just get smoked for free and not learn much.
I’m always up for playing but it is a niche of a niche and no cross play (maybe between the PS3 and PS4 versions but that ain’t too helpful) so I’ve kind of let it languish.
Brain was melting today due to headache and being tired so I opted out of SF5 (though I did hit the lab for an hour). Should be around for a bit after dinner tomorrow.
Maybe it’s the EVO effect but I have been playing it these days and I’m getting matches fast in ranked without getting steamrolled and opening a lobby yourself is doable and gets you rolling in like 3 minutes.
Yes it is mad fun and being able to convert combos from big reaching pokes feel quite powerful yet fair, which is an impressive feat. Like many characters have meterless DPs and I’m like whatever, I don’t even need to get close on wakeup to meaty you. Basically scratching my itch for some stuff I wasn’t playing in a long time like cancelable sweeps, legit godtier zoning yet also a grappler that doesn’t suck balls.
Please anounce a hype character for SFV soon or I might be lost to anime forever.
Couldn’t quite get you to jump on will with Sagat, but the mika set was me literally just doing hard reads on a lot of your bad tendencies.
go to my CFN and watch the matches I played afterwards against the other Sakura. It’ll give a good idea of what your game should look like on some ends.
I play a whole lot of it, if you’re on PC I suggest you join the discords for matches, on PS4 you gucci with normal matchmaking but you can still get a boost if you go to the discords.
As per Character selection, UNIST is strongly lacking in “reasons”. It’s Hilda, period, Yuzu has some minor “reasons” and the rest is pretty much the opposite… “instinct”(?)
Anyway, great game, surprisingly easier to get into from an SF mentality than other Anime fighters. Learn yo combo timings, rest will come natural.
Uniest is SF, when you put it on steroids and tell it to go punch someone in the face with a chainsaw.
It’s really grounded and hasn’t a lot of mechanics you have to memorice, most come from the GRD Meter.
Also there is no air-block or airdashs, just Assults, though you can air-shield but if your opponent doesn’t do something you’re going to die.
Either ways game has Reverse Beat and a pretty easy and free Combo System, Walkspeed is pretty good for most chars and the midrange game is actually midrange instead of point blank like in SFV.
Also Hilda is underaged, I have to inform the FBI here.
For matches either go for Player Matches, since no one cares about Ranked in anime or join a Discord.
It plays like a mix of both, it has SF ground elements without the heavy emphasis on air options some other games have. Some characters can go full anime tho, it’s just not a majority.
You have really really good defensive options in UNIST though, dashblocking/shield/green shield/chain shift/block reverse/all of the OS options are all good to keep the match interactive between two players, you won’t ever have a point in the match where you feel lacking on defensive tools. But offensive tools are still crazy strong, so it’s a good balance of both.
Like Cipher said, utilising the GRD meter is the games unique aspect, it’s like if VTrigger Cancels were dependent on a tug-of-war rather than being handed out for free for losing. The system is fantastic.
The netplay however, is really fuckin bad. I can only dread what the US landscape for netplay is like.
