Not fan of that analogy. Best analogy to describe Ryu and Ken would be Superman and Batman.
Superman/Ryu is the official mascot of the company/franchise and the most recognizable character, even if not the most beloved. The icon.
Batman/Ken, while not quite as globally recognizable and iconic, are generally considered “cooler” by fans in the know, making more people gravitate towards them. Icons in their own right and #2s for their respective companies.
If anyone was Ryu’s Robin, it’d be Sakura. Lesser, younger version with limitless potential and similar fighting styles.
Don’t know what you’d call Akuma. Lol. You’re on the money with the Chun Li/Wonder Woman comparison though. She is #3 right behind Superman/Ryu and Batman/Ken.
I disagree with your Batman/Ken analogy. I considered the Superman/Batman thing but Ken’s story/character is too dependent and defined by his relationship with Ryu to ever be someone as standalone as Batman. Alex for example, could be a Batman and so would Nash or Guile because their plots were conceived separately and can be independent while still be part of the general story arc of the series.
It would be amazing if Ken became his own man, but as of yet he still Ryu’s best friend.
True that on the story. I meant as far as presence/popularity rather than plot. Ryu and Superman are the main guys and the primary icons of the company wile Ken and Batman are the cooler runner ups.
And yeah while he definitely isn’t more BELOVED than Batman, Superman is definitely more popular than Batman globally as a brand and in overall pop lexicon. The Superman symbol is more recognizable, the first superhero most people who don’t follow comics will be superman, a strong man is usually called superman rather than batman etc. He’s the originator. Batman isn’t far behind at all though, and like I said, for people who actually know these characters, more people prefer Batman.
Plot wise I still wouldn’t see Ken as Robin since he’s not portrayed as being Ryu’s underling, but rather his equal.
Myself and quite a few other people want Necro to return. I mained Necro in 3s. I just think it’s unlikely do to not enough casuals not knowing him.
I personally love his win poses and taunt, because I often play “annoying” characters (Vega, Billy Kane). But I’m also afraid Capcom would ruin him by bringing him back.
In any case, he’ll show up in DLC if at all. There’s just no way he’s making it in before Alex, Urien, Karin, R. Mika… Akuma, and basically the whole sf2 cast. If Birdie hadn’t already been announced, I’d say that he had the possibility of being the “freak” character, but since Birdie’s there… yeah.
Back when Decapre hadn’t been announced for USF4, many folks here on SRK seriously thought Ibuki’s pet raccoon-dog Don-Chan was going to be revealed as the 5th playable character. I wonder what its chances are to make it in SF5.
Sakura should have a style like that character of air master. Capcom parodied that with fuerte and seems like dan but giving sakura maki’s moveset and a bland but badass tracksuit. El fuerte should be more like that mexican in air master though cuz that one was nice.
Come to think of it the master blaster looks like a buff necro, dhalsim should stay skinny but necro…a buff keepaway character…
Fuerte’s design takes gettin used to but done the right way he could be really damn fun.
Honestly like how sakura played in sf4. She stayed in and comboed your ass to death with tatsu loops. I don’t she how she plays similar to all the other fireball characters. People are just hating on her

Ryu is like the Ryu of the series, the main protagonist who the MAIN plot is pushed forward by but not necessarily tied to everyone. Ken is a bit more like Ken of the series, number two and rival of main character whose story mostly revolves around his relationship with the main protagonist. Chun is like the Chun Li of SF series, not heavily tied to the main character but rather a protagonist of her own accord and important to the series as a whole.[/details]
Perhaps they’re saving it for the character who actually taught Ryu the move: Master Donkey. A donkey master of the martial arts and kicking really hard.
I’m still hoping for Decapre, Juri, Dudley and Poison but i think the only one being in the starting roster will be Juri. All of them have a distinct personality and are rather unique already even Decapre who has the personality of a robot, with glimpses of the real person coming through sometimes. She is determined and somewhat dull yet tormented and the real Decapre tries to claw its way back at the surface but the brainwashing is too strong. Decapre just needs to be more unique compared to Cammy, especially her normals.
I think all those characters are awesome and very unique perfect for SFV except for decapre she is just another clone, if she ever make it I hipe she get redisigned
