Do we really need a new thread for this? Hasn’t this been discussed to death in the existing [character request/anticipation thread](SFV Character Request/Anticipation Thread
Lemme know what you think. I figured it wouldn’t be bad since I’ve had this speculation for a while and I was surprised at how many people weren’t sure or didn’t understand the possible idea behind this. If you want me to just post this in general discussion I can close the thread.
I honestly haven’t checked that thread since the one time I posted in it.
EDIT: Yeah I see it was discussed somewhere in the middle of the discussion thread, but at this point you’d have to go through the middle of the discussion to even find that discussion. I feel this is important to get out to everyone in a single thread so I’ll stand by it for now.
I’ll leave what to do with the thread in your hands. I’ll just have it as open discussion for now since I feel it’s good to really get everyone’s opinion on this specific reveal of the roster. If it closes I’ll just post it in character thread to get some more opinions there again.
As far as the topic at hand, Birdie is TECHNICALLY a SF1 character but on the fight cards they only care
about listing characters as being from Super SF2, SF Alpha or 3rd Strike. Capcom doesn’t really seem to care to differentiate whether or not you were in SF1.
With the information in the picture you can already put Necalli and the other 3 new IPs in the upper right purple portion. Birdie and Nash are both coincidentally in the Alpha games and happen to be in the lower right portion in blue portion. Birdie COULD be in the green portion, but it’s interesting that he isn’t and only characters that HAVE been in SF2 are in that portion. Which means mentioning SF1 would just be getting overly specific and not seeing the big coincidence in where the characters are placed.
Returning characters from the last game, new characters, and returning characters that did not make it into SF4 seems more likely than a direct separation by game.
Essentially I’ve been looking at that core 16 characters picture that has the questions marks on the to be released characters. Yet I noticed something interesting about the pictures that may give us a good idea on what types of characters we’ll be getting at launch.
In this picture you see the 16 character slots with 9 of the slots still having questions marks in them. What I want you to see is quite blurry in this pic so I made a better pic from the youtube video of the panel.
In this picture it’s quite visible that there are different colored backgrounds behind parts of these character portraits. **There’s a green background that goes behind the first 8 characters on the left, a purple background that goes behind the 4 characters in the upper right and a blueish background that goes behind the 4 characters on the bottom right. **
**Key Speculation Notes:
The 5 characters revealed so far behind the green background are all SF2 characters.
The 2 characters revealed in the bottom right blue portion are coincidentally Alpha characters.
No one is shown in the purple portion yet, but I would assume if Necalli was revealed before the Evo panel he would be in that portion.
The picture confirms that FOUR characters will be brand new to the IP.
Essentially the idea is that the backgrounds behind the characters identify something big. My theory is that everyone in the green background on the left will end up being SF2 characters (5 of the 8 characters in that background coincidentally have been in SF2). Which kinda fits in line with Vanilla SFIV making sure it had a solid roster of the 7 Eleven characters. The 4 characters on the bottom in the blue background will end up being Alpha characters. Then to complete a new SF game and make it feel new, like Vanilla SFIV the 4 characters in the upper purple area will most likely be new characters to the IP. A new Capcom staff will want to make their mark with a new game by ensuring there are new characters to the IP that make the game feel fresh and not just SF4.5. 4 new characters to the IP is also confirmed in the picture description.**
I got that wrong. So 5 characters are actually revealed in that green portion and they’re coincidentally all SF2 characters. I say the odds of the last 3 characters that will appear in the green portion also being SF2 characters are pretty high. I don’t see them adding Alpha or 3S characters in that portion, but we’ll see.
Green = Characters that were in either or both of SF2 and SF4
Blue = Everyone Else
Purple = New Challengers
Whichever the case, it disproves the Siliconera rumors of Urien, Alex, Karin, and Mika. Because only 2 of these can make it in, 3 if Urien is the final boss.
Another theory I had which I hope is not true is that SFV takes place before SF3, thus its goal is to set the stage for the Secret Society and ease people into the SF3 era.
This means:
Green = Characters that were in either or both of SF2 and SF4
Blue = Alpha
Purple = New Challengers
Boss = Urien/Gill/Other SS character
First DLC pack = SF3 Characters.
I hope I am wrong because this game needs to fucking take place after SF3 goddamit.
I think the Green section are character that were in SFIV,Blue is for returning ones and the other for the new ones.
This would make more sense to me than having 8 SF2 characters.
See it like this we have 5 chars in the green section they were all in SFIV, I’m sure the other 3 are in SFIV as well.
The blue section is for returning ones, characters which aren’t in SFIV. Birdie and Charlie Nash are already in and there are 2 spots left, which could be Alex and Karin.
Necalli would be the first spot in the purple(?) section and the other 3 spots would be for the other new ones.
That means only 2 chars will return and I’m 100% sure one is Alex, the other spots goes to characters we saw in SFIV. Let the guessing begin we have 39 chars left.
Historically SF has pretty consistently been a sausage fest. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s only 4/16 female chars. I do hope there is a bit better representation though.
Spoiler
SF2 - 1 out of 12 (8.3%)
SSF2 - 2 out of 16 (12.5%)
SFA - 2 out of 13 (15.3%)
SFA2 - 3 out of 18 (16.6%)
SFA3 - 8 out of 29 (27.5%)
SFA3 Max - 10 out of 37 (27%)
SF3:NG - 2 out of 12 (16.6%)
SF3:2I - 2 out of 15 (13.3%)
SF3:3S - 4 out of 20 (20%)
SF4 - 2 out of 17 playable (19 total) (11.7% / 10.5%)
SF4 Home - 5 out of 25 (20%)
SSF4 - 8 out of 35 (22.8%)
SSF4AE - 8 out of 39 (20.5%)
USF4 - 11 out of 44. (25%)
Going by these numbers it is about 20% of the cast is female on average in any given version of SF. First version of any of these games only 12% of the cast is female so yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if we only get 1 MAYBE 2 more female characters.
