We don’t know if it’s smart business because outside the internal decision to remove the butt slap there was no indication it would have negatively impacted the sales or distribution of the game. All we know is that Ono removed it out of concern for people’s level of comfort. It’s hard to say what made him think this or why the alt Chun/ryu alt outfit got a pass but when it’s all said and done he censored himself to avoid making people uncomfortable. It really isn’t a complicated discussion or topic worth discussing at this length and detail.
All this talk about censorship of ass and tits. Remember back in the good ol’ days of SF2 when you would punch someone and they would spit up blood or vomit? The days when you could stand over your bloody and battered opponent declaring victory? That was true censorship!
What really sticks out to me and makes me want to discuss, is the inconsistency and indecisiveness of it all. He self censors himself to avoid making people uncomfortable. But with everything else in the game. He clearly didn’t give a damn about that when they were making it. So what changed? And this isn’t enough to avoid making people uncomfortable. Those who aren’t comfortable with such themes in a game will still cringe and be turned away by things like R.Mika’s critical art, Chun’s critical art in her alt. Cammy’s win pose, half of the ladies wearing thongs etc. Removing the butt slap and altering Cammy’s intro while still leaving in everything else. Is like removing a rock from a mountain. You changed something, but not enough to make a difference. And this is not even considering upcoming characters. I.E Juri who might even add more fan service. If Capcom wants to not make people uncomfortable. Juri will be the test for that. If they actually mean that then she will be toned down from here SF4 look. If not, or if they make her even more sexual. Then this with them altering Cammy’s intro and removing the butt slap will have been pointless.
Of course he’s acting like me and imitating me. I’ve had it happen before online. He’s completely obsessed with me and jealous of my personality so he’s stealing it. Nothing new to me as weird as this might sound to people.
Just leave him alone and he’ll go away.
It doesn’t bother me it’s the highest form of flattery though at times it can be weird, well it is weird and to the person it’s happening to I assure you it’s not flattery but, regardless I’ll just pray for him or something. It’s a cry for help, and no one can take your personality no matter how hard they try.
Anyways back on topic. Watching old beta footage, the startup for the super looked so cool before. It really drains the personality out of it.
This whole thing about expanding markets and making people feel more comfortable is bizarre nonsense. If you are uncomfortable with that critical art the way it was you have some serious problems and id suggest finding a culture that opresses sexuality and free expression. (“You” as in this made up ridiculous idea that these people actually exist).
I stated the censorship sucks and that more people should speak up on social media about it.
I said (and I’m right) that giving this a free pass could lead to more censorship by release time.
Unless those of us who spoke out had an effect (the petitions Max and AOS etc) id bet money they’d mess with Laura’s “angles” as well, that may have been avoided, but wouldn’t surprise me if they do change her prior to release.
Explain to me how that’s paranoid. I think it’s totally realistic and had these changes not caused a bit of a stir I would go as far as to say more changes particularly to Laura would have been a given.
-edit- sorry for the double post. Mobile SRK is a bit screwy this post was on page 10, and to my knowledge there is no way to delete posts now.
The only difference it made is Mikas CA looks stupid now and it sucked the personality out of it. Now it’s as generic and dumb as your typical SFIV super.
Capcom are just compete pussies. They put one or two edgy and cool things in the game and then in the end decided against it because they are compete cowards.
Also probably an overreach from marketing or on of the stupid suit groups who has no business telling the artists what to do. I doubt it was Onos idea but it was his final call as producer.
I know I’ve said this before, sort of, but the guy who programmed Mika, these people take extreme devotion and love for what they do. Details and things you and I take for granted they obsess over and perfect for months or even years. The designer of Tails in Sonic the Hedgehog was brought to tears - tears - when Sega USA changed the name from Miles Prower to Tails. These guys are really passionate. That’s what this thread was always about and my motivation for making it, because as an artist myself I understand this.
That’s why it pisses me off to no extent that we still aren’t passed the “lol boobiez and buttz” meme but at least at this point it’s down to one obsessed troll.
The blood or “vomit” in the old SF2, I think the color might have been changed on Super Nintendo version but not the Genesis version. Same with the bloody faces, again that wasn’t in Turbo on the SNES but was in Special Champion Edition (which I had always assumed was an extra because that version had 4 extra Meg’s, so I’m not sure).
Im not sure if it was censorship, I highly doubt it, just poor color choices but it always made me laugh, Ken’s game over face in Super. It looks like he got spaghetti on his face. Like Blanka threw a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs and that’s his reaction lol. It’s just a weird pallette thing because Giefs bloody eyeball and Claw and so forth.
Cammys Sprite was censored in the Super Nintendo version of Super Street Fighter 2. They nerfed her Vagina. I’m not joking.
The fan service was strong with Mika in Super if you think about it. It’s very… Detailed.
Well then that confirms that GG has had a real effect, because Bayonetta 1’s reviews NEVER got effected at all from that. In fact it was praised for a strong female character. The worst or only thing I read in one review was that it was very “Japanese” and that Western audiences might not get it.
Regardless. I still don’t see reviewers lowering SFV’s score because of that but man, what a shitty climate that “scandal” caused. And it makes no sense; Gamergate was actually just about a female developer of some no name game who slept with a reviewer. How it turned into what it turned into is beyond me. Somehow we went from a slutty game developer trying to get a head to some insane bitch in front of the United Nations calling for people that disagree with her or call her stupid om the Internet to be thrown in jail.
How the F did I end up with a quadroopled post >_>’’’
I think SFV could’ve gotten away with that. Our perception of violence has changes so drasticly since SFII. I mean, if a 5-6 year old can handle someone getting blown up or shot in Call Of Duty, why can’t SFV up the grittiness and violence a bit by adding some blood, vomit, and a brutally beaten defeated pose?
SFV could’ve gotten away with a lot more than people think it could. This whole “everyone’s offended by everything so we have to try and not offend anyone” thing going on nowadays is just ridiculous and flat out stupid. People shouldn’t feel they have to change things in anticipation of people being offended. Just be essentially like “fuck you, it’s our game/movie/TV show/book/etc, and if you don’t like it, then just don’t buy/watch/read it”.
@LivewireX Well, in my defense, The Killer B outfit as far as I know wasn’t in a game. However I did post Mika from an Udon comic so, I may have also shattered my own Arg U ment…I didn’t make that Cammy comparison image! <_<
EDIT:…I hate when I respond without refreshing the page to see if new responses have happened.
And don’t forget about these…maybe I should like…poot it in my signature…
Oh, I wasn’t trying to attack you. Also, Killer Bee Cammy is Cammy from the Alpha games, and that outfit is what she wears in those. I figured that was partly why her Alpha 3 theme was called “Doll Eyes”. At least, as opposed to a reference to like Hole or something, lol.
@ParryAll You’re so quick to scream censorship and what not over every lil thing. Now there are some cases of censorship in gaming due to SJWE and feminist pressure. But this isn’t one of them. This is just simply a business move on Capcom’s parts. Now you could argue that SJWs and feminist has created an environment that makes game devs hesitant to want to include such themes. But there is no direct pressure being applied. There’s no outcry and actual effort to censor the game like there was with Dragon’s Crown. But I will say it is a stupid business move, and honestly pointless one because like I said before. Removing a butt slap and altering a intro with everything else that is still in the game ( and what else may come via dlc ) is like removing a rock from a mountain. You changed something, but not enough to make a difference.
There was blood and vomit depicted in SF all the way into SF3 , Alpha series, and even the SFEX games. Oro’s dick is clearly visible in the start up frames of his Cr.HK in all the versions of SF3. They even had settings in particular ports of SFA3 to toggle the gore on and off. Even the Gameboy Advanced port of SSFIIT featured blood. I’m saying that the censorship of SF started after the making of Second Impact going into Third Strike. Specifically when they decided to cut the victory screens that featured everyone battered and beaten, including the featured female cast. They would continue to feature the blood in the ported versions of the older games, but there’s nothing remotely like this after the advent of SF4.
The point is, your not gonna see any of this in SF games today.
Look this goes for the entire “it’s not censorship omgz u guyz for realz” crowd: cool. We get it. You don’t think censoring Mikas buttox and Cammys intro are censorship. Hmmm, well uh, ok. Fantastic. I disagree strongly and all I can say is that when I made this thread I never expected arguing this point I just assumed it was common sense. I mean. Jesus. The way I learned about this in the first place was watching one of Maximillians Doods videos titled “SFV Censorship”…
All I can say I guess is when movies on television replace fuck with fudge or they cut frames of death or do off screen kills or cut the sex scene from the tv version or blur a woman’s bottom in a bikini or zoom/play with camera angles to hide the “too hot for TV” moments that it’s censorship. They do it so people don’t complain.
Actually wasn’t there a nude scene in a PS3/PS4 game, where they ended up not showing it but someone hacked it anyway? Anyways…
You still disagree? Cool. Well agree to disagree. And Guess what? It doesn’t matter.
I really don’t care what you want to call it ok. You wanna call it “business decisions” well yeah every decision at the end of the day comes down to money for these companies so you’re not wrong. Unless I’m mistaken you dislike and are against the change, right? So I really dont have anything to argue about with you since I also fully agree and don’t like the change.
You’re really focused on the superfluous aspect, you’re arguing semantics with me. Who cares. I don’t. As long as we agree on the key issue then it’s really of zero importance what you call it. Which is what I said to that stalker won’t speak his name here but I told him the exact same thing. We agree on the core issue: the change sucks donkey dicks.
Bringing up Han Solos change in New Hope. Is that censorship? Not exactly it was changed, as Lucas says so kids wouldn’t think of Han as this evil stone cold killer… Even though nobody thought that and even though that “tiny” change literally ruined the character and made his transformation pointless. If someone called that “censorship” I’d say sure you could call it that I would just call it a dumb change, but it’s not worth arguing over semantics when we both agree on the main point which is that the change sucks!
That’s all I’m saying. You can call the change anything you like call it censorship call it business call it selective camera editing call it antibootyism it really doesn’t matter and I really don’t care, the bottom line is its shitty and we’d like to see Ono do the right thing and restore the hypest CA in the game.
Merry Christmas Eve’s Eve everyone
Excellent post.
And don’t censor that haha. Xvids didn’t censor his. I think SRK can handle such “intense blood and gore” (which is nothing compared to say, Mortal Kombat which I’m sure fatality gifs aren’t censored here, right?).
Oh sorry did I call that censorship I meant to call it… Uh, erm, err… Selective… Business Free Market Enterprise… Web Forum Respectful For Eyes Only Rated E10+ Post Metiliculation™
Attention: BB_Hood, That guy who digs through my trash every Wednesday, a must watch
Should have just posted this in the first place and called it a day…
-edit- you know what grosses me out. I made this post in my typical ParryAll style, but it makes me squirm and get irky because that stalker guy recently did a post in my style cause he’s trying to be cool like ParryAll so it’s just… Yucky. That’s why I don’t like imitators folks. I literally have an Irate Gamer to my AVGN here on SRK now… Oh well whatever.
No, I agree with the inconsistency, and I don’t know how he or whoever made the call expects it to change anything other than getting a few news stories in which they can claim that they give a shit. It’s silly and meaningless. It’s the level of outrage that leaves me in disbelief. Just post after post of incoherent drivel about how the SJWs are coming to take your cartoon butts away. I’m not talking about you in particular, but the crazier posters.
You can’t have it both ways. You can’t discount the possibility of them making the changes to lower the rating because “there were no external influences” while also crying censorship due to “whining from SJWs”. ESRB are super inconsistent and different people look at different parts of the game, and what people find acceptable for a certain rating will vary. It’s not a hill I’m exactly willing to die on but you can’t dismiss the possibility on account of there being other and possibly even lewder stuff either. It’s possible that the call came too late to make anything but half-assed (ohohoho) changes, and you might wonder why even bother then. But being slightly confused is quite a far cry from doubling down on the insanity, fighting windmills and assembling internet militias.
I’m in disbelief with the amount of “who gives a shit” posts yet they gave enough of a shit to post several times.
I’m not worried about the STW’s. I’m not worried about cartoon butts. I made my points concise and clear on the first page.
I did rant for a bit about how stupid that group is later on and how lame the fence sitters are, but my main points were always and still are artistry and character. At least that one very well respected poster got it, read and understood my posts and backed me up.
But yeah keep calling me a crazy perv who is upset about boobies and buttz even though I never said that and actually defended myself countless times against the exact baseless accusation.
The button system is incredibly stupid but I really wish there was one for a middle finger then I’d support it.
