SFIV: Resolution and aspect ratio anomolies on HDTVs + solution

I have a Sammy A630 and the Just Scan trick worked like a charm. You can definitely tell there’s more real estate.

Owners of NON-XBR Bravias… Your Solution Awaits in this Post

Ok listen up. Alot of HDTV’s, especially the lower end models and off brands, they do not have support for Pixel-for-Pixel mapping. On Samsung this is called “Just Scan” setting, for Sony it is just the “Normal” setting.

For example, if you have a non-XBR Bravia, through component your TV defaults to “Full” (Read: overscanned image) and cannot be changed to “normal”.

So you have two solutions. First, if you hook through HDMI you will now have the option for “Optimal Resolution” in the 360’s settings page. However, for my Bravia, this created a huge problem. For some reason, the image quality for me was severly gimped: fucked up colors, shimmery and grainy text/graphics, and artifacting galore. People at GAF explained to me that because my TV’s native resolution was closer to a PC resolution, this caused my TV and 360 to get into an upscale/downscale/upscale problem resulting in the aforementioned problems.

The solution for me was VGA. VGA gives you the exact resolution you need without the problems, and allows for the correct resolution output. The result? A perfect, non overscanned image, without having to pay the extra $$ for an XBR unit that supports pixel-for-pixel mapping.
Makes a HUGE difference on SF4 and VF5 also.

Cheers mate. Good info. I’ve added these details to the Cliffs/Summary at the beginning of the thread. Hope you don’t mind me quoting you.

VF5 is a new game after this. Seriously.

Actually all my games are new. The difference is shocking.

I do have an Samsung LCD 23" LCD monitor. I don’t see any sort of “Just Scan” or so on the monitor but the portraits are placed on the edge :(|

Halp?

I haven’t tried any other games since doing this as my pS3 has essentially become an SFIV machine.

I’m eager to see GTA4 and Ass Creed - both of which I bought recently and haven’t completed  I have a sealed copy of MGS4 aswell, though I have no basis of comparison beforehand since I haven’t even put the disc on my machine.

I did notice a difference with the PSN store however. Nothing huge, but it just looked ‘correct’ - swapping in and out of modes kind of drove the point home too

I know exactly what you mean. I just solved my cropping problem by getting a new Samsung LN32A550(32 inch/1080p), and I’m replaying a lot of my old games because the difference is as you said, shocking. It feels like I’m re-discovering those games from scratch.

Ok WTF is with this resolution:

I doubt it is the proper way to display the game, because I’ve never seen a vid of the Arcade versions with the characters so small, and so much room at the bottom. Is this a setting I am missing in the options, or is this how it looks on some displays? I’m confused.

I just wanted to come in and say that I was COMPLETELY oblivious to this before stumbling upon this threat so thank you OP.

I have a Sony KDLW4100 and the solution to this was very simple for me. (note: My 360 is connected through HDMI. Setting the xbox resolution to “optimal resolution” did nothing for me). So in case anyone else has a W4100 here is what I had to do.

Press the home button on the remote, scroll over to “Settings” and select “Screen.” Change the display area to “Full Pixel.” That’s it. Simple fix, probably pretty obvious, but whatever, I had no idea @_@

Hope this helps someone out.

I’m not completly sure, but it seems to me as if the guy in that video set the HUD like in the arcade (super bars further down, life bars higher). Go to screen setting within the game options and try for yourself. Now, I know that doesn’t explain the cropped sides on the video, which may be because of the same reason you’ve been exposing all of this time. I can’t help but notice the characters in this guy’s video look way to small.

I have a 40’ Samsung LCD TV with my PS3 connected via HDMI, and I have a different issue but I thought I’d post it here just in case it helps someone…

Basically back when I got the PS3 & TV I plugged them in and turned them on, the PS3 auto-detected 1080p and everything was good.

Very soon it became apparent that the sound would periodically screw up and start being all crackly with lots of static. :crybaby: So I fiddled with every setting on both my TV and PS3, tried different HDMI cables, decided the PS3 was faulty and sent it back to Sony who checked it out and said it was fine, fiddled with the settings some more…

Eventually I figured out that if I have the video setting on the PS3 set to 1080p the sound fucks up, and if I untick the 1080p box then it’s fine. I have no idea what the fundamental issue is - perhaps some incompatibility between the model of my TV and the PS3? Who knows… But that’s my work-around.

Thanks for the info!
I have a Samsung LE-40M87BD
I did have this problem.
I tested both Xbox360 and PS3 on my TV, and the game looked way better on Xbox360.
But after setting my TV to “just scan” the game looks great on PS3 just like on the Xbox360.

Yeah this post is really helpful, I noticed sf4 looked kind of weird when I first started playing it considering how unproportionately big the characters are in contrast to the screen but I just kept on playing thinking that’s what Capcom intended because I never played the arcade version.
Now the characters are properly aligned to the screen; and another suggestion to all the samsung 1080p lcd tv owners if you guys want to replicate the arcade look and make it a little better try using dynamic as your t.v. setting and just lower the brightness from 100 to 90 and increase the color from 50 to 55. I found this resolution is even better than the arcades

I have a KDLV3000 and had to change my display area from Normal to +1

This is interesting. Sitting at the console screen or xmb or whateverthefuck you call the PS3 home screen, “Full Pixel” is an option in the screen settings. The display shows 16:9 1080p. When I run SF4 “Full Pixel” option disappears and all that is available is “Normal” +1, -1,-2. +1 produces the results desired but it seems I will have to do this every single time?

Sony KDL V3000 here.

edit: I wonder how many 720p games I’m going to need to do this for?

Anyone with a Sony SXRD XBR1. I have tried everything and still can’t get it to scale properly. I am also connected to HDMI however it is connected to my Onkyo reciever and not directly to the TV. Could this be the culprit. I set the reciever to “pass through” so it should be alright. I have the “normal” option but for some unknown reason I cannot select it.

I knew something seemed a little off when I first popped the game in on release day. Character looked a tad bit bigger. I also noticed when on the far ends of either side half the charactes would be cut-off. This is a great thread and I hope I can figure it out. I may try plugging the 360 directly into the TV but it should still work going into the reciever. Oh well…

BTW I did try the “optimal resolution” setting in the 360 dash but still no go

Almost every single person I know playing this game on an HDTV had this issue and was oblivious to it. Wow.

Yep. It really sucks that a lot of people will remain ignorant to this. Its a significant reduction in screen size if you don’t invoke the scanning/aspect ration corrections.

If you have a vizo model: VW26L and you want the proper ratios, then you’ll have to go with VGA cables. Component will not give the proper ratio. Also, i’m not sure if HDMI would fix the problem since my 360 doesn’t have HDMI ports (But that model TV has 2).

Yeah and the only reason I found out about it was that in several games, I noticed some written dialog or logo was cut-off and it just didn’t feel right. After switching from 720p to 1080i I noticed I would see a bit more on 1080i, but still not the full picture. I think it has to do with the native resolution of your TV or monitor…just make sure it matches 720p or 1080p. My first TV had native 1440X900 and didn’t have a “just scan” function.

The new TV I bought(Samsung LN32A550) is native@1080p, so the image is not modified in any way(most of the time I guess depending on the game also).
