I have a Sony Bravia, something or other. 32", and here is SF4 @ 720p
As you can see, my image is somewhere in between the two you have posted, however there is no option for “just scan”
Fuck I knew I should have got a Samsung. Not that big of a deal, but damn I really want that extra couple centimeters real estate. When I saw Pic #2 it just looks so right vs. my image…
Any work around for Bravia owners?
-EDIT- oh and please note, in that picture of settings, there is normal, wide, widezoom and full. Normal is blacked out! How much you wanna bet that is the setting I want! Hmm. Why the fuck won’t it let me select? Is this because I am using component instead of HDMI? If so I will get on an HDMI solution ASAP. That’s the only thing I can think of, I mean why would the “normal” option be blacked out and I have to deal with “full”??? So confusing.
Looking at your image, this is EXACTLY what I was dealing with. i.e. Sagat’s profile image is hard up against the edge of the screen and his foot is essentially at the bottom. Looks like your shit is cropped. That really sucks.
Again, this is really noticeable in SFIV. But do you think it applies to other games? SFIV was the first game that I knew didn’t look right and it turns out I was correct.
I’d imagine so. I assume your set has HDMI inputs? In which case, go out and pick up an HDMI cable for your PS3/360 and give it a shot. HDMI leads are quite cheap and the difference in output is significantly better irrespective of all these cropping problems. I only hope ‘full’ isn’t some euphemism for “16:9” or “native aspect ratio” in terms of your screen type (i.e. a widescreen.)
That sucks. I think I mentioned earlier that it strikes me as odd that Capcom didn’t implement a screen adjust feature in their screen options for SFIV.
Lots of games have this feature as an answer to various alignment anomalies and so on. It would go a long way towards aiding those who perhaps have no real options with their display hardware akin to what I have with my particular television.
What are you using to connect your PS3/360? DVI? DSUB? HDMI?
From what others are saying, I have a feeling this may be a tweak reserved strictly for HDMI connections. I don’t know for sure though, as I simply don’t have a DVI interface on my set and I can’t test for you.
When I arrive home from work today I will see if the ‘Just Scan’ option is available for my VGA/DSUB interfaces however and post my findings.
I don’t have a Samsung and have my PS3 hooked up to my 24" PC monitor and noticed it’s getting cropped thanks to this thread, the problem is I have no way to correct this (tried HDMI and component) what’s even weirder is my 360 doesn’t seem to be affected at all. I rarely use my 360 because I don’t have any decent sticks for it and my previous ones all RROD’d so I’m stuck with this issue, guess it’s time to shop for a decent TV.
Some models let you turn it off, some don’t. Luckily mopst recent TVs have a “full pixel” “pixel perfect”, “Just scan” or “exact scan” mode to turn overscanning. The proper name for it is “1:1 pixel mapping”. This is what you want. You want 1:1 pixel aspect ratio to get rid of overscanning. Overscanning is a FEATURE, not a BUG that you can read up on via the rest of the internet.
What annoys the fsck out of me is that some manufactures are so blind that they do not include an option to turn it off. FSCK YOU LG; I WILL NEVER BUY YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN.
PS, you are more likely to be able to turn off overscanning on a 1080p set than a 720p set.
To answer your question in two parts: No, this is not the first game I noticed. Virtua Fighter 4, I always thought something was up, it’s so wide in videos I’ve seen yet on my TV it suffers this same cropped look. Sure enough, It’s this overscanning bullshit. Motherfucker!!!
I am hoping and praying that this is only an issue with Component Cables. Once I get an HDMI, the option for “Normal” better light the fuck up, or a Sony Rep is going to be getting a size 11.5" doc martin boot up his ass.
Mini update. I’m kind of scared. Gamestop has there shit hooked component, and the image is fine. Ruh-roh. But why Sony, why the fuck is “Normal” option blacked out??? I swear to god, I would have paid 300 more for the BRAVIA XBR had I known this. Guess I’ll find out soon enough…
On my Samsung A450 I can’t select any other options besides 16:9 and 4:3. My 360 is connected via HDMI. It doesn’t seem like its overscanning anything though.
Nevermind: Had the 360 set to optimal settings which sets it to the TV’s natural resolution. 1360x768. While the 360 is in this mode you can’t select Just Scan. When you set it to 720P or any other resolution you can.
i have a samsung lns4095D and noticed that I also have this overscan problem. I also did not have the “just scan” option to fix it. Upon further research, I found out that there was a new firmware for the tv that enabled the “just scan” option, but only for 1080P. Installed it no problem but it doesnt help with SF4 since SF4 runs at 720P and there’s no way to force 1080P, I’m stuck with the cropping or overscan problem.
=(
Gotta hook your shit up HDMI. When you hook up Component, it sets it to 720p. The option for “optimal resolution” only shows up VIA HDMI. For Samsung it’s clearly different. Lights out, chances are your “optimal resolution” and “just scan” should look the same.
Thank you OP for bringing this to my attention. It really is soo much better playing this in the proper resolution. It feels more like SF with the extra space vs. the zoomed in look.
Try hooking your 360 via HDMI. Then it will automatically set to your TV’s optimal resolution via the 360 itself. You don’t need the just scan option.
This might be a solution for overscan period. People should list what they are hooked up with, component or HDMI. I’m willing to bet alot of my 360 friends are doing component and that’s the problem.
Thanks a million, Gamogo. Turns out I did indeed have my Samsung in 16:9, and the extra real estate gained in SFIV using “just scan” is more than just a subtle difference.
Well, after playing around with this for a while, I can understand why over scan is a feature.
Games look way better when the 360 is set to 720p vs. TV’s native resolution (optimal resolution) IMO. Even if the image is cropped a bit. My guess is there is some internal scaling going on… somewhere. Honestly, I am torn. I actually prefer the old look, and I may just stick with it.
Whats your 360 set to now that you hooked it up with HDMI, 1080p or 720p ? my 42" Polaroid LCD is 1080p (doesn’t hae a “just scan” option), I have my 360 set to 1080p via HDMI and I get the zoomed in image in SF4, now mind you I haven’t tried setting the 360 to 720p to see if it zooms out.
LOL you’re right I guess, funny part is that both my friend with a Bravia and my friend with a Samsung said picture looks clearer / better on my TV, it will probably self destruct in short time if it has to have a disadvantage.
