SFIV: Resolution and aspect ratio anomolies on HDTVs + solution

Someone really needs to edit this thread title. It doesn’t just effect samsungs. I have glazed over this thread dozens of times because of the name alone. Boy am I glad I finally read it, was wondering why it kept getting bumped.

I can’t edit the title unfortunately - perhaps a mod can?

Maybe call it “Common LCD TV aspect ratio and resolution problem with solution!”

Thanks for the information , I immediately checked my Samsung TV and it was left to "Just scan"
already . I noticed how much screen can go away if you don’t use this!

Bump

reeebump!

I’ve read through this thread a few times, but I don’t think I’ve figured out the answer to my problem. Of course that could be because I just don’t understand all the tech lingo, sigh.

I have a 32" Sony Bravia I bought at the end of 2008 connected via HDMI to a PS3 for SFIV. Over the weekend, I played on my friend’s old school TV which displayed the game in a different aspect ration, giving us more playing field. Now, I’m trying to recreate this on my TV.

I’ve tried switching between the “full”, “widezoom”, etc. modes on the Bravia, but it still just gives me the different takes on the same incorrect sizing. If I set the Playstation 3 to 480i and 4:3, I can get the larger playfield but it stretches the characters horizontally and everything looks grainy.

So, how do I get a Sony Bravia and a PS3 to play nicely together in high def with the wide playfield? Oh yeah, and if things weren’t difficult enough, my TV is Japanese.

Help!

Sucks about foriegn tv but hopefully if its like EVERY other sony I sell if it has the xmb on it you can pretty much just go off of the pictures on screen… should look like a rectangle with arrows inside of it… those are your screen settings or try downloading the english manual off the sony support site cause it should have same model tvs on it.
Personally i have not seen the cropping issues on either one of my sony’s (60 or40 in) Some tvs have an “AUTO ASPECT” on i.e sony, toshiba, pioneer… if you can find that and turn it off and then re-size screen to like full, wide, full pixel or native setting you should be good to go… Hope this helps someone

You mentioned how things were sweet on your friend’s TV - but on yours its skewed still.

Could you confirm if you are using HDMI on YOUR TV also? Some features that pertain to screen sizing are unavailable UNLESS you are using an HDMI lead.

My friend has some small, old TV. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s not HD or anything. When we play on it, it’s the standard, zoomed out, traditional SF look.

On MY TV, which is a Sony Bravia with a PS3 connected by HDMI, it’s the zoomed in look, which makes the fighters the size of Tekken characters. The Ultra bars are also too high and block the characters feet.

The only fix I’ve found is to make it 480i, but that’s only somewhat fixes the problem, since I have to run it with the black bars on the sides to make the characters proportions correct.

The SD TV look is not correct. Some people prefer it, because it gives you so much more room at the bottom, it “feels” more like oldschool SF.

Now, what you are viewing is an overscanned image, because the bars should not be blocking the feet, and there should be breathing room between

The difference doesn’t look that big, but trust me, it makes playing the game like night and day. I know EXACTLY what you mean about it feeling like Tekken, trust me, it makes a huge deal of difference gaining just the inch on each axis space, and the characters are smaller/the way they should be.

And yeah, tons of people are oblivious to this. Furthermore, ALL your games will look better once you fix this, less Jaggies (because of less upscalling). Halo 3 looks dramatically better after I got my shit hooked up properly.

If your Bravia is like mine, the only way to get the proper output is to get VGA cables. Or HDMI, though I had very bad problems with HDMI (could have been the cable though).

Another problem FBT has in terms of troubleshooting this lies in the fact that the PS3 has no VGA output option.

FBT: Do you have access to some component cables you can perhaps try? While this won’t allow 1080p output, it may offer a better resolution that is compatible with a properly scaled 16:9 aspect ratio - which is what you’re after.

I could have sworn someone earlier in this thread had an almost identical problem.

He may have the overscan issue, but in the bars thing he mentions I think he is refering to the super bars covering the character’s feet, which is happening in the exact same way in both the images you linked (normal and overscanned). If he doesn’t like that he can change the HUD settings in the display options to be like the “arcade” and have the bars lowered further down the screen (and the life gauges further up) without the need of changing resolutions and all that jazz.

i have an old Sharp Aquos LC-26GA5U (supports up to 1080i)

i also notice that when i use my AV cables that the models look smaller, and when i use the hdmi cable (SFiV running 720p) it looks more “zoomed in”

looked for related stuff, closest thing i found was (under HDMI setup) Auto View… sets whether or not to use VIEW MODE depending on signal recognition.

if i can’t find anything monitor-side, is there anything else i can do beside buying a converter?

I don’t have a samsung, I got a Philips my PS triple is hooked up via HMDI and I would like my screen to be correct as shown here.

What do I do help me please.

i have noticed this since i got my hdtv when the 360 first came out.

it would make sence for the console to have a screen size adjust option like in pc display options.
luckily some games do,
like blazblue and senke no ronde
blazblue ‘scaling b’ fits perfectly so it must be a standard overcrop amount on most tv’s.

hrm… i am using the Mayflash VGA cable for my ps3 to a Viewsonic VX922

The models look sort of skinny… maybe it’s because it’s only 19"?

If i change the resolution and then plug the vga in will it fix it?

Type: Samsung LCD LE27T5

Right now I’ve ‘fixed’ it by shoving the resolution to lowest and on 4:3 aspect ratio.

Normally it’s at 16:9 and the res is 1360 xx 768. On a PS3 and when I set the res to high I don’t get the aspect ratio option, only on lower settings.

I don’t have a “Just scan” just 16:9 and 4:3
