SFIII 3rd Strike (SUPERCADE/GGPO/nFBA,etc) Palmod palettes fair

you can’t touch this

yoyoyo

new oro pal, I made a quick edit of oro’s fireballs+yagyou, but it wouldn’t look really good in a screenshot as it’s made of so many frames, so no preview here, maybe later if I take time
a new oro pal

(plus a rework on an old one), gonna make a couple more, plus work out eyes/SA2 “phone home” startup colours and then post.

nothing will stop oro’s odyssey

ok and a couple Questions (that Let brought up) to Suupa, maybe I should PM them, but I’ll try here first :

-Suupa, how can we help you to update PALMOD?
-you spoke of ripping sprites I think, so stupid question ahead, can’t you use Joram/zweifuss spritepacks ?
-would it be possible to edit main characters’s sprites so we add bits of sprites aside the main sprite (in a sprite sheet manner) so we could have all extra colours that show up in certain anims at least once to have an easier edit ?
-In the end, can we help you somewhere here?

For the sprites, AFAIK, the Zweifuss pack has been built with Dreamcast version, so there may be some small differences here and there…
More than one sprite would be great for the edit ^^
Another cool option, specially for editing chars stage, would be to allow more than a 8x8 palette ^^

graphics are supposedly the same on DC…supposedly.
I was afraid there would be some differences in colour indexes or whatever math gibberish…

Suupa must know anyway, but the point is that after working on ryu, oro and others, we know very well in which frame of which anim you can see isolated colour values, so it would anyway be easier since we know exactly what to rip if the sprite sheet thing is doable… even parts of sprites (like ryu’s shoulder/face during throw anim)

backgrounds are on the way ! I saw ryu’s sky ! great !
haven’t seen a BIG palette yet, but more than 8x8, would rock !

Ha, I hope a good Christmas was had by all!

Nice Oro Alien, looks very original! The game looks awesome with scanlines for sure.

I asked Suupa a few of these questions previously, so in good old English beligerance I thought I’d try and answer a few of them, or at least repeat what he told me :wgrin:

-Suupa, how can we help you to update PALMOD?

The answer I got was to basically help and narrow down all the palette locations. So far we’ve got most of them I think, but the backgrounds will be horrific that’s for sure.

Also, I know Suupa appreciates anyone letting him know about bugs, so I think it’s good for people to point things out as it takes a really long time to test these things out.

-you spoke of ripping sprites I think, so stupid question ahead, can’t you use Joram/zweifuss spritepacks ?

I don’t think this works - the sprites need to be ripped directly from an emulator and the rom itself, so that the colours are 100% correct. Also I think it has something to do with the data and how the program changes the rom itself as you move the slider bars etc, so that data has to correspond completely, as far as I know.

-would it be possible to edit main characters’s sprites so we add bits of sprites aside the main sprite (in a sprite sheet manner) so we could have all extra colours that show up in certain anims at least once to have an easier edit ?

SuupaBuu did tell me at one point that he was going to adjust certain sprites, so it may be that he adds certain other frames like the way he made Urien’s intro - but that’s just me hazarding a guess.

Personally I stand by the old fashioned way of just opening up the game and testing these bits out. Beware of save states though, they don’t seem to work in the standard emulator. One thing I have noticed is that certain sprites in the game ARE messed up in areas, like on Ryu’s throw animation like you just said and the bit of headband colour on his leg.

-In the end, can we help you somewhere here? *

  • I’m sure Suupa appreciates the feedback and offers of help, he works really hard and has some surprises round the corner for palette hacker freaks, or the ‘community’ if there’s enough of us to make one. :wgrin:

So that was just my way of saying ask him I guess!

.

Savestates works fine (in FBA Shuffle at least), you just have to save before a round: after select menu or after first/second round. It seems all data are re-loaded each round…

One question on FBA Shuffle: is there a way (command line or other option) to launch game with (certain?) cheat directly enabled?

HA!! you sure do know your coding!

But I don’t know about shortcuts… Maybe someone will know and pipe up.

ha you did it !
now I’m angry… you’ll force me to reaveal who made Ken’s palettes (you noticed he dresses with strong colours?) :

Uk’s Best Kept Secret

Spoiler

that’ll teach you to reply with useful info

ok, back to topic, I’ll ask Suupa, and here is a tip for beginners and not so beginners, hope it helps :

Coloured sprites are complex, and 3S’s have been built with the idea that they would use coloured shadows (very strong ones), so, no one forces people here to use colour shadows, I mean you can still go for the SNK way and just choose a colour and then make it darker or lighter to shade it’s another sound way of making it.
but
coloured shades are harder to achieven especially for beginners, since you focus on single different colours and thus easily loose track of mmm (help me here) “shade values”, the risk, and what often happens is loosing the feeling of volume in the sprites.
A simple way of going back to volume, while working colours that way is turning your image to grayscale.

Haha Alien that is too funny :hitit:

I think you have a very good point and I took it on board some time back after it fully sank in - I went and re-did a few of my palettes as they did look quite flat and monotonous.

Super Turbo especially had very flat colouring on sprites, and the artists seemed to make everything lighter by just adding white, it looks characterful but very old style spriting.

I did a few super turbo colours in my palettes so I’ve used that in a few cases but I agree it’s better to use coloured shadows in 3S sprites. What I DON’T like is that they [capcom artists] go over the top sometimes, making shadows ridiculously coloured or way too light. Yun has that alot on his trousers and arms in some palettes, as if there’s lots of light shining off the floor?!

I tried to find an image that explians this, is this what you mean? :

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii47/L___E___T/tintshadetone.png

I would say super turbo uses tint and shade but 3S definitely uses tone - though my point is that sometimes that tone is too light or using the wrong colour imo. It doesn’t always have to be the polar opposite but I still think shadows on skin should be darker than flat areas, whatever way one looks at it.

.

^^^
exactly, thanks for the point, my colour vocab in english is too limited.
(but tint and shade are one and the same thing relying on grayscales, somehow, it breaks a colour, makes it loose its light… but it’s still one way to go, it still works, SNK do that a lot along with american comics and others)

and tint+shadows can be used along tone sometimes (you may even want to get a flatter look on parts and then not use tone).

In the same way, you don’t have to systematically add the complementary colour, like to get a violet darker, adding yellow won’t do good, just trust your instincts.
Or you can think of warm colours and cold colours… one can consider you have different areas of shades, strong shades, cold ones, and inter shades, warm ones and then plain colour, right in the light.

just try stuff, theory is a great base, but there’s no definitive rules in colours.

Thanks for the explanation - got it.

Happy New Year folks!!
Good luck learning how to fireball…

[ 2ND UPDATE ] latest doc attached with Ryu, Chun, Sean, Urien and Remy’s extras included.

ESN I used your Urien data and found the win pose flames so slipped those in, hope you don’t mind - I haven’t updated your page as I’m not certain of anything at this point and didn’t want to edit until certain! :wgrin:

Had to remove the attachment so I could attach the Makoto ACT files, will attach it next post.
.

[ 3RD UPDATE ] I decided I didn’t like one of Makoto’s colours, so I made her a new one I was working on, I prefer it.

If you want it (plus some others) it’s attached at the bottom.

[ 4th UPDATE ] I also uploaded Twelve’s set I made ages ago. Nothing special just thought I’d get it out the way. Some colours are alot like a few posted previously but what the hey, there’s only so many colours you can make with Twelve.

- Heads up -

I’ve taken a look at how palettes are stored in the DC version of the game, and they’re pretty much exactly the same. The thing that’s noteworthy, is that the extras are within the characters files. After a couple of hours, I added the game to Palmod, and I was able to see some familiar colors within the list, like specials.

I don’t know if all are there (I didn’t see Oro’s stones), but for the ones that are there, it wont be hard to be able to look for the same colors in the ARC version. I could edit the code to be able to hit copy on the colors I see, and hit find on a hex editor to find the same values I’ve copied.

Great job on finding the colors so far guys! Sorry I had to pop this up late in the process. :frowning:

Hi Suupa and thanks for the update :wonder:

Just to clarify though, does that mean we should halt finding palettes? When you say you added the game in 2 hours do you mean the WHOLE game? I’ve had fun finding the palettes I did so far but it sure takes a long time so I’ll halt for now in case you’ve found an easier way. I said I’d attach my list anyway so that’s at the bottom.

Got to thinking I should probably finish my character colours too seeing as I only have a few left now. Here’s Urien I did from ages ago (with intro!)

I guess I went for an evil politician! Oro to come next.

.

yo
tried fast your uriens
didn’t see the costume intro (using your 51)

other than that, yup, a few words of explaination from Suupa would be cool.
either he can add things very easily, either it’ll help him to use ripped material (stages too yeah !)… well, we’ll see.
Sounds good anyway.

Balls.

I remember now I left it off actually, I must’ve forgotten. Oh well I’ll leave it for now as there is a player 2 version to add along with fireballs and aegis that I want to edit etc - seems better to just update it then rather than now and again later, sorry.

I’ll send Suupa a PM and ask him in the meantime to try and get a better idea.

Following Supaa previous post, I made a new little script allowing to search correspondance between an entire line (8 colors) of a DC palette and the ARC database.
http://ensabahnur.free.fr/ROM_51_SearchColor/viewPalette.php

It works with most of the things i tried (like chars colors that i didn’t know where palettes were located as it’s already done in PalMod), but some just didn’t match…

I guess there are small differences between both versions…

If you use it, be careful of the first color of any palettes (FF00FF, pink) which seems to become pure black (000000) in ARC version. You’ll have to manually change this value if you try searching a palettes’ first line.

Another point: you’re gonna be stopped after 30sec if process still running (ISP constraint).
So be careful to note where it stops and continue from this value.
(This advice is valid for all scripts.)

Hope this gonna help…

I got exactly 1253 DC palettes. Does anyone have got some more? Cause i’m pretty sure i don’t have backgrounds ones

been a while since i’ve posted here, but rest assured i’ve been making new pallets with the new palmod. when they’re good a ready i’ll post them in here.

nice to see who Oro REALLY is, alien!

nice pallets LET. your edits have this really soft color effect to them. keep up the good work!
as soon as i have some time i’ll post some of my shit in here

Forgive me for sounding noobish, but I just started messing with this earlier.

I created a color for Urien using black for one half of his body and white for the other (like Gill), however, when I play with it and I happen to be on the other side of the screen, the colors won’t coordinate and for his win poses, some of the colors change. What exactly do I need to go to fix this? I can take screenshots if necessary.

some of uriens moves like low strong have mirrored palettes and only use one color. theres no fix

Thanks for the compliment Poot - though I’ve backtraced your palettes and saved them all as I think they’re the most original on here, so I’m glad if you like mine but I think many of yours are much nicer!

I need to jump back on this too, I have a few characters left and nearly finished Elena.

Trouble is, I do a round of edits then decide later on I don’t like them as much and go changing them again

Sucks about Urien I guess, but I hate that two-tone thing personally, I’m going to get rid of it for Gill too - the shine effect is enough I think :wgrin:

hey

very busy these days I had no time to post, but I did a lot of palettes.
sadly, I made them on a laptop and now have to re-fine tune them due to the shitty laptop’s screen.
finished a job yesterday, I’m gonna take some time to do that and post up soon.

Also, what’s up with the entries research then? I didn’t really get what ESN meant by "I have 1500+ palettes for DC but backgrounds are not in?"
Does it mean we don’t have to search for new palettes anymore? or just backgrounds? or is it still useful if we take care of breaking one background palette part down in bits?
Also, how did you acquire the said 1500 palettes ESN? Can we acquire more, or did you mean something else?

I tried fast to take a ripped background layer from zweifuss’s site, open it in photoshop and view the indexed colours table, and try to find some with your scripts.
I couldn’t find anything really convincing, bu tlacked time.
would that be somehow useful or is it another way?
