Emulation over Saturn.
Apoc.
Do you mean that saturn is not acceptable, or that given a choice, emulation is preferred. Assuming that your saying saturn is unacceptable:
The smaller tournaments would probably use xbox A3 and be fine.
The only chance for a large tournament at that point would be on supergun, the issues with that are currently:
since most people are going to be playing A3 with the joystick they use for every other game, there still needs to be a way to remap buttons… it sounds fairly simple to put some sort of switchbox on the jamma leads for the most common configs. AFAIK you would just need L1/L2/R1/R2, as i haven’t seen a stick where the main 4 are mapped incorrectly.
Enough boards would need to be secured to handle 64+ people. If my math is correct that is 700 play minutes (11.6 hours) to get to final 8. That would be the minimum, so i figure 5-6 setups would work. Can 5-6 superguns and A3’s be secured?
Somehow we would need to add another entire game into the lineup, thats a logistical issue i guess we’ll have to talk through, but i don’t see that as a huge obstacle compared to the others.

If they say there’s a shot, I’ll start buying up A3 boards wherever I can get them. Hell, I might have 6 all by myself come January.
N - I’m gonna have to open an arcade or something.
OR a USB converter – which run for about 10$
Someone can slap you with a lawsuit for just about anything. The question is if it will be worth it for the Plaintiff. For a small local tourney, it’s unlikely that people could buy multiple Alpha 3 boards to play on, the gross revenue is like $100, and if anything the presence of competitive Alpha 3 might sell a couple copies of the PSX version.
Capcom could theoretically go out of their way to fuck with people that are playing their games, for almost no return, but it’s unlikely. However, they won’t condone it for a big tourney on account of copyright reasons, I’m sure.
It’s sad that Capcom won’t put a penny into SF tournaments. Most of the players played SF all their lives. We get nothing in return.
Which is why you’d expect SRK to understand us all(all SF players) and make things right while their doing their thang. Proof positive that SRK has lost touch with SF players. Just my opinion.
Apoc.
Seriously, they wouldn’t condone it but, I highly doubt that they’d bring a lawsuit against SRK for using emulators. It would be far from worth it and the negative publicity in the gaming scene, in general, would be HUGE, imo.
If we were to use emulators at Evo, I don’t believe for one second that Capcom would lift a finger. Even using older games, it’s free advertising and a testament to how well they’ve BEEN making games. If capcom won’t throw a decent ammount towards the advertising of tourneys, themselves, I think that it would be obvious to anyone of moderate intelligence that it would be counter-productive, as well as a waste of money and resources, to bring any kind of lawsuit. Unless, of course, they could prove that SRK was making BANK from Evo. There isn’t any reason to damage their image.
Apoc.
I think it’s best not to assume that sfa3 on emulator at Evo would risk-free. SRK already has to ask each developer about having their games at Evo. I’m sure knowing in what form the game will be played is an important aspect of that conversation.
Isn’t turning into a real company the direction SRK is headed in? Getting some sponsorship this year was a big step for Evo. I believe inkblot has stated before he wants fighting games to be as big as competitive PC gaming is right now. All those professional leagues out there for PC games are created by actual companies because only they have the backing to get huge cash prizes for their tournies. This is a little OT, but I’m curious as to your opinions.
What kind of company would it be? What’s the product? I mean, SRK doesn’t make games and without the players, they have nothing. They maintain a website that is 90% forums, if not more. They also organize tourneys, which, again, is nothing without the support of players and, unless we’ve all been lied to, they make nothing holding Evo.
So no. Unless SRK is trying to become a fighting game advertisement company, I have no idea what you could be talking about.
Back on topic. What would SRK be sued for if they held A3 using emulators? They are non-profit. They aren’t using the game to make money so, as long as they can prove that, all a tourney is doing is advertising for the company and encouraging folks to be interested in Capcom games in general. I think that I really need this explained to me. To me, it’s like oral copulation(Legal term for a BJ). In many states, it’s illegal to get a BJ from EVEN your wife but, no one is going to enforce that law. It just happens to be on the books. I see nothing criminal and no stealing of business being done by holding a tourney with emulators. I don’t see what could be gained by starting legal proceedings regarding the matter. Help me out here. I must be missing something. For now, it’s just another bs excuse to me, like the bs excuse used for GG this year. SRK said that they worried about the legalities since there was no #R release in the US yet. However, ST was played on the DC and that was never released in the U.S. It’s just another convenient excuse to me until I get a thorough explanation.
Apoc.
The piracy debate in the US is pretty much out of hand. It’s not even the companies doing the work anymore, they have hired guns (IDSA, MPAA) that basically have nothing better to do than go around shutting people down.
Simply the threat of getting involved with something like this is enough to make it hard for us. Real life example: sometime last year, the college here had their staff “educated” on piracy. That conversation basically amounted to ‘if you do anything we don’t like, we’re suing you’, the result to us, we were banned from having ANY TOURNAMENTS, even legit ones, until we got written permission from capcom that it was ok. I went through several resources here, finally found someone at capcom, but of course it got lost somewhere in the legal department, i never got my approval, and we had to move the whole event off campus, which costs us a hell of a lot more for the same or less space. If we had something evo size, we would have been forced to cancel, and this is without even mentioning emulation.
The same goes with sponsors, media coverage, etc… basically these organizations have them so scared that if they think there’s even a hint that something might be up, it’s easier for them to just pull out. The fact is noone but SRK’ers are going to risk anything for EVO, but somehow we need to recoup the costs of running a high traffic site, and tournaments that get better every year, not to mention the things that I feel could be done like funding US teams for international competition etc… So far srk has been able to balance it pretty well, but I see no real way that emulators can be incorporated into this equation UNLESS capcom for some reason says outright that it is ok.
The obstacle for capcom saying it’s ok, is that it ropes them right into the heart of the discussion, basically everyone is waiting for SOMEONE to say it’s ok so they can start their own petition to every other game to be legally emulated. Maybe it puts capcom in the middle of a war, maybe it makes capcom a hero of the gamer. Either way, no manager there is willing to risk their job to find out the answer, so it’s easier for them to keep the status quo, which is to continue to let the lawyers recklessly harass all of us so they can stand up on TV and say they are ‘winning the war on piracy’ by scaring people from letting us have tournaments.
Their stance on these issues is very black and white, according to them, the only way to play a game is to buy it from the company or a licensed reseller. For instance, according to the MPAA, it is illegal to play DVDs AT ALL unless it’s on a officially licensed DVD player.
So it would be pretty simple for them to say the only way to play A3 is on psx/ss/arcade. Would they be able to sue srk successfully, maybe not, would they be able to force all the sponsors out and scare calpoly into kicking evo out, probably so. Good luck convincing them that psx A3 isn’t like the arcade.
Would capcom go through the trouble of all this? your right, probably not. Would a lawyer representing either capcom or the software industry do it, knowing it would probably get him hired with other gaming companies trying to protect their interests? Absolutely. Is anyone at capcom going to risk their job to prevent this from happening? I doubt it. That’s why it’s such a big issue.
The fact that it didn’t happen for ST on DC doesn’t mean that the issue has gone away, it was just low enough under the radar THAT time. honestly i wouldn’t doubt it if that was so AE can replace ST just to avoid that issue.
Fair enough. Still, I have to look at the fact that Capcom, or any legal respresentive of theirs, have not said a thing about ST.
I see your side but I don’t think any lawyer is thinking of making a career out of representing game companies on an issue such as this one.
Apoc.
Wasn’t there something about being able to have one extra copy of a game that you have bought for backup purposes? Would having a SFA3 board for each emulated computer be ok? But I suppose if you have the boards then you would be playing on them then?
Even if you were able to cover all of your bases, if you were charged by the lawyers anyway, you would have to face the legal costs. So basically companies can just threaten you with bankruptcy just be threatening you to have to go through the legal system. Instant win for them.
Thing is, why would capcom spend extra money on not only a game they don’t care about, but an ENTIRE GENRE they don’t care about. As far as Capcom is concerned, A3 is a “Oh yeah, that’s right, I forgot we even did that game” game. Now granted, they can grind the defendant down as FMJ said(common legal practice, ultimate form of turtling), but they really have no angle on it. Hell, Capcom coin op doesn’t even exist anymore, someone should check and see if they held the copyright on it, if they did, then BAM, it’s abondonware. Back on track, they have no angle that makes sense for them to give 2 legal shits about us, even if they want to try and wear us out in the system, it costs them as much, actually probably much more, than it does us. And lets put this in true perspective here, if we have boards on hand and they choose to pursue it legally, then all the sudden it’s not Allmighty Capcom vs. little tiny SRK community, it’s Capcom starting an all out legal battle against THE ENTIRE FAIR USE MOVEMENT for a game they don’t make money off of or even care about(make no mistake, we would have support, even if no one cares about us specifically, plenty care about the concept and have a vested interest in where that legal battle would go
) They have no interest in opening that can of worms, over something that they have no way to profit over. I think emulation can be a viable option if we do it right(hell if we dump the boards on our own there isn’t even an argument to be made against it, we would be 100% legally clear) Let us also note that several of evo’s sponsors have some interest in emulation, RO sells converters, logitech makes PC stuff, etc.)
Just to clear up a few things — if you’re talking about Baltimore Chun, he clearly didn’t attend any “Shadowman” tourneys in CT – he beat me at NEC. Nor is he a noob if you been following the scene closely. And when did I officially “move on” to start playing MVC2? Heh.
b chun is ill =/ not noob bahn posting=gold
Then that’s where the people have to come in. We have to somehow someway make capcom understand that we are emulating it not because we wish to steal their product, but because we love it and want to see it reborn again, if we make them understand this they will know that it is good for them as well because they can potentially make more money off a game they deemed dead years ago. If the people want it, then Im sure Capcom would allow such a thing if the outcry for it is a big enough. Why don’t we all just come together and make some kind of petition or gathering to state our case to Capcom, that is the only way we can at least find out for sure if A3 will ever come back. I love that game, and I wish I could challenge more people with my V-ism Sodom, but we have to come together so that we can all enjoy and play a game we love on that bigger platoe we all want to see this game end up in.
A3 for evo? Count me in!
And you are?
