SF5, New Players and the FGC

With the resurgence of Street Fighter over the past few years, what are everyone’s thoughts on SF5 and players that haven’t touched Street Fighter before attempting to play it? One of the best things in the world, in my opinion, is to see new faces in tournaments or even consistent posting from individuals here (I say this after finally making an account after lurking for a couple years).

I feel like by far that the FGC is easily one of the friendliest communities (sans some jerk faces due to the medium of communication being the internet), though sometimes I don’t think we all make enough of an effort to bring new competition. We are content with playing against our friends and that’s it, or finding some new player online, giving them the business and peacing out. Many people say “Give the game a chance, sit down and learn it and you’ll be thankful that you did.” but I feel like the while the words can be sincere, how many of us take the time to teach someone?

SF5 can be an opportunity to unite and make an honest effort to push the boundaries of new blood and competition with the cross platform play between PC and PS4. Maybe buy the game for someone as a gift and play it with them.

I read it’s gonna be free to play like Killer Instinct.

Something to string into this topic is the upcoming generation of top players which I always enjoy watching. Each new title brings in one talent who can go on to become world class and dominate the game. The most recent players that come to mind are NuckleDu and Smug who have come leaps and bounds since their introduction into the community.

What I like about these games is that unlike games like DOTA/LoL you can take part in Majors and such whoever you are, and the best man wins. Nothing to do with your status within the community or who your sponsor/team is, very few invitational events and a lot of different tournaments across countries.

Hell, if some of the stream monsters and forum dwellers put time into their grind and travelled for events they could be the next Daigo for all we know. Anyone can be big and dominate the scene is what I’m saying, and I love how we get to watch the progression of those players through streams etc.

I haven’t found anything definitive that says it would be.

Sounds like a salty Xbox fanboy told you this.

I could see SF5 going the KI season route. That I don’t mind. Because if Juri is a release that’s not vanilla. I will be SO hyped. The hyperst man alive then.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with KI’s “free-to-play/season” format. In fact, many of us could save a lot of money if Capcom adopted the business model & if they are reasonable with the cost per character.

That idea sucks. Sorry

And many believe that KI went the f2p path because the game was rushed by Microsoft so they could have a fighter available for their launch window.

Well if that’s how you feel then so be it lol. I believe it was a good idea for Microsoft to adopt the F2P path because it works for me & my circle.

The F2P model gives players more flexibility than buying a bunch of characters & extras you won’t even use. I bought everything KI has to offer in Season 1 for $40, but I have a friend that just casually plays with the monthly free character & later picked up just Sabrewulf for $5 because she liked the character.

If I wasn’t really into Street Fighter, I don’t need a roster of 44. Just give me Blanka, Fei Long, & Ryu and im cool. Thats $15 bucks.

How would they have an arcade version with the console and PC versions being F2P?

If they sell characters 1 by 1, they are making it pay-2-win. Because you have to buy every character to learn the match ups. This is unacceptable. Characters should NOT be sold as dlcs unless they are part of a full upgrade that will divide the playerbase (for balance reasons).

They can make a lot of money off of stuff like costumes, without making it pay-2-win. See Valve DotA 2 thread.

I guess I don’t have a problem with the F2P model.

As far as getting new blood into the game is concerned I agree 100%, I always extend a hand to players when I fight them on SF4. My friends list has blown up on Steam because of it. I made a “GG!” group that has reached 200 players now as a medium of communication between players though hardly anyone joins the steam chat…unfortunately. I’ve been bugging people about it month by month through the announcement feature but it seems like no one thinks to join the chat when they boot the game for a session. Ah well!

@Daemos‌

Well if match-ups are that important to you, then buy all the characters in bulk at a discount.

Like KI, SFV could come in Seasons. Example:

SFV (2016) - 16 Characters /Buy in bulk or individually.

Super SFV (2018) - 16 Characters / Buy in Bulk or individually.

Ultra SFV (2020) - 16 Characters …

No need to buy a new disc for each iteration. Nobody is left behind. The upgrade is free. The pricing for characters & bundles would be the big question though.

Another alternative would be to have all characters accessible in training-mode.

@Rioting Soul

There may not be an Arcade version, unfortunately. We don’t know yet, but it’s possible based on the Sony deal.

My hopes for SFV is that they get rid of the business model straight from 90s.
The biggest problem in getting new players in is, in my experience, that just straight up BUYING a competitive multiplayer game is not something that people will do.

My hopes:
F2P with a rotation of free characters. Unlock them all for a normal retail SF price (~50$?) or character by character.

This would literally have no downside to it, but only bring new players to the game.

Why hasn’t this happened? Because Japanese arcade-developers don’t understand anything about modern video game business models outside of … arcade.
I have heard that KI uses a model somewhat like this (haven’t played it so can’t be sure) and I think it’s a really smart move from them.

EDIT: Seems like this subject has already been discussed here. Should probably read the thread before posting, hah.

May I ask, why does it suck?

I think the hardcore Sony guys will Def support this game on top of the sf faithful who may even jump on ps4 instead I think it will do well

Just as long as TOs like me have an option to get everyone in one purchase then that would be fine.

Isn’t this the case with Killer Instinct as of now, shouldn’t this be an issue? Oh wait, people only care about competitive Capcom fighters, silly me.

So a season pass in other words? Too bad those poor kids in Brazil will only be able to buy one character at a time, while little D3V has his match up knowledge down and the advantage for reasons above. That doesn’t sound very fair sir, oh well.

Why not Dota 2’s free to play system?

Yeah I know it won’t happen since Capcom Japan is literally retarded, but it’s the best system out there and the game shits money for GabeN.

I just don’t understand how people would be ok with a crappy system like the one KI uses.
The f2p system used in Tekken and KI are horrific bullshit that even makes LoL with its pyramid scheme bullshit look like a fair game to get into.

I call bullshit on this argument. KI’s character release system builds match-up knowledge faster as you’ll have the maximum amount of players experimenting online from drop date to the next; those that choose to adopt and main continue the process after extensive community exposure. The current bulk releases are terrible as 10 match-ups are harder to learn at once with uneven representation allowing for unpopular characters to either go under the radar or possibly completely undeveloped. If memory serves, Gen didn’t show at tournaments at launch of Vanilla till Arcade Edition and was simply slept on despite being, at the least, a decent character throughout.

Gonna try to wrangle this back on topic somewhat.

How would this F2P system entice other players outside of the “They won’t have to pay $60 bucks for a new game.” statement? How would this entice former players to return to SF5?
