SF4 Session @ Versis this Thursday

Come tonight I think we’ll have 3S set up!

Wanted to be there this week… but on top of being poor… I picked up a fever. I think it’s burning my brain.

I couldn’t even figure out how to exchange pleasantries with some people I knew at the store. That’s completely unlike me… so… yeah. Brain = dead.

Have a good time, folks!

I’ll see if I can make it out next week.

I had an awesome time! I will definitely be back next week.

Bumperfront, glad you had a great time man! Thanks, I really appreciate you coming out!

Thanks to the following people who made it out last night:

  • Yangsing
  • Derek
  • SSB (formerly known as Tsunami Ken - I don’t think it means Super Smash Bros.)
  • Bumperfront
  • Matt
  • Ronjo
  • Sam Y
  • Rayblade
  • Andrew Tran
  • Mackinzie
  • Bobby

I promise, in the future we’ll make sure that matchups are more diverse or at least suit each groups’ needs. No worries, we’ll work on it in the future and I think EVERYONE understands and is cool about it too.

Anyhow, it was a really diverse night. The great news was the diversity. The tough news was that it resulted in all SF4 players queuing up on 1 station.

However, there was no star game of the night. Just about all of the following games had almost equal amounts of play:

  • Street Fighter IV
  • Super Street Fighter 2: HD Remix
  • Virtua Fighter 5
  • Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
  • Capcom vs. SNK 2 (all people wanting to practice for the Evo SNK characters only tourney–contact Fat Bear and let’s arrange some sessions!)

For the last two, thanks goes to Mackinzie for bringing his CRT in for another night of not-so-old-school goodness–virtually lag-free!

-I heard some good laughter and cheers from the SFIV station. I didn’t play enough matches because I didn’t want to extend the queue. Next time we’ll go back to having two stations for awhile. Lots of fun playing against Derek’s Akuma, Ray’s Gen, and Ronjo’s Gouken (your Gouken is a bit psycho crazy, but so much fun to fight against).

-Yangsing, Sam, and Tran all seemed to have some serious HD Remix matches.

-In VF5, Mackinzie & Bobby, keep at it! Simon, my gosh you’re still getting stronger and stronger so fast! And Rayblade, I still have a love-hate relationship with your Vanessa (she beat me down like 4-1 at the end of the night).

-In CvS2, Sam Y showed off some long juggles with Kim and had some good SNK Only matches with Tran.

-In Third Strike, I didn’t see much… but thanks for the crazy Remi exhibition, Sam! Thought I saw a v-ism projectile sequence!

GOOD STUFF!

-Chanchai

GGs. Ray and I had some intense matches after you left. Got in some decent SF4 as well.

Hey Nick!

Im Back in the VF5 game. Everyone knows i already play Pai, but Im tryen to go deeper with other characters but i dont know who i really wanna play so i figure i would ask you. You seen how i play. Im Looking for someone on the lower of the execution side. but high on the pressure.

My initial Choices

  • Vannessa - Has my real life fight style overall.

  • Goh - Has my grappling style

  • Brad - Has my real life striking style

  • Aoi ----- Dont know why, i always liked her.

Anything is good. Thanks in advance.

go does some really good damage on “floaty combos”

and a lot of his throws are hard to tech against.

plus his elbow df.p is reaaally good.

i know i’m a scrub at vf, but i’m finding out stuff when playing.

Shut up peasent!!!

one handed money matches in 3s or sfIV.

put up or shut up.

Hey Raishinken,

Hmm it’s always a tough choice.

I personally feel a good character for low-execution and good pressure is Eileen. This was more the case in the PS3 version, but I still think it applies. That said, don’t just pick her because I said that, but that’s who comes to mind when I think low-execution and good pressure.

I honestly think Jeffry is a good character for you because his combos aren’t too hard to practice, you just need to get the right guessing games with him to take out the opponent, and you can still do some good striking as long as you utilize the spacing well. But it would take a bit of time and dedication of course.

As for the characters you mentioned:

Vanessa: Hard to learn in the sense that you want to really get to know her movelist, but if you enjoy using her she’s a great character and she can really pressure opponents. I hesitate to call her low-execution because I feel you really need to know most of her movelist decently well to be able to apply pressure with her. But once you get to that level, the pressure she packs on the opponent is immense. Ray’s Vanessa is a perfect example of how much pressure Vanessa can put on an opponent, and in either of her stances too. Vanessa is a technical character, but very rewarding because I can’t really think of a character that can apply more pressure than she does when you factor in her sabaki attacks, quick up-close pokes, evasive attacks, throw game, low throws, and how she has a strong attack for each range (she has a quick as hell up-close, decent close-up attacks, her sidekick is the best of any sidekick, she can play long range too). VANESSA = TECHNICAL, BUT STRONG ON ALL COUNTS–CAN DEFINITELY PRESSURE OPPONENTS. Her combos might be easy to practice and learn, but it’s the fact that you’ll have to use A LOT OF HER MOVES or at least really grasp a lot of them that makes her hard to learn.

Goh: Tricky to explain Goh. He also has good damage potential, but his game is a bit unorthadox and I’m not the best guy to explain or advocate Goh. He has an awesome throw game, he has big damage combos too, he’s kind of a setup-artist as far as I can tell. And aesthetically, he’s badass. I wish I could explain him better hehe.

Brad: Lots of pressure, lots of easy to learn damage, probably the easiest guy to learn on your list. But to master him can be tough. Brad generally does good damage with a great striking game. If you want to gamble, he can do huge gigantic damage, but you kind of have to gamble. His throw game sucks though, so you’ll be forced to be a bit more creative with a mix of low attacks and throws. In terms of a quick transition from your Pai, he’s probably one of the easiest, but it’s not too easy, there’s still lots to learn.

Aoi: Hmm… one of my favorite characters to pressure with, but a very technical character. I don’t really recommend her as a character to pickup and learn unless you want to go hardcore with it. She’ll take a lot of time to learn how to do really good damage beyond combos ending with d+KPP or utilizing her throws. Her offense is a little bit to technical and might require too much foresight. I recommend her for playing for fun for awhile until you’re comfortable with her. But it’ll take time before you reap rewards with her against a good or experienced opponent. She has the goods, but her offense is very technical and too full of holes if you aren’t playing her technically.

MY THOUGHTS: I’d personally like to see you try Jeffry, Vanessa, and Eileen. But that’s just my opinion and I’m cool with whoever you pick–i’m just really happy you’re back in the game!

Heading to PSU at 3 and definately heading to Versis tomorrow night as well.
I will be bringing a laptop with all the street fighter games on it and it should work fine with xbox/usb sticks.

Nick, it’s SSP and it stands for Supersonic Percussion which is my record label.
Tsunamiken is a little too long and complex so I went with something impossible to mess up.

Nick, we should try this bracket later today:

http://www.r2sports.com/tourney/drawsOut/roundRobin.asp?TID=2503&divID=753&print=YES&blankDraw=YES&roundRobinDefaultLayout=byRound

I like that bracket Ray, it gets the players some exposure rather than a long wait to take two losses in a row and be done.

If anyone wants a ride to Versis tonight I will come pick your scrappy ass up as long as its not insanely far away. Contact me at 503-475-3713

Hey Ray,

I think that’ll be great. It’ll be a nice simulation of tournament-pressure too, while letting everyone play. Always down with Round Robin ^^

That said, we are planning to do a tournament again but dates have been sketchy.

With PSU’s Spring tournament happening this month, there is a possibility of setting up the next tournament to be mid-June.

For the record May 15th was in the works, but because of various circumstances (not just one circumstance I should add), it seems like it will not work out.

But Versis is excited to have another tournament soon!

This is the main page for Round Robin Brackets (up to 14 players/teams)

Sam Y suggested we do this for 1 station, then have the other one be normal (no limitation on streak?).

Ray how about we just hook up our own machine and you beat my ass for 6 hours tonight? That’s what I am really lookin for honestly.

Also, can anyone tell me if there is an IRC channel for Portland fighters?

need a major VF5 session this thusday, hope you are up for it Nick.

Last week I had a great time playing SF4 with everyone who came to the Fight Night.

  • Chad M.
  • SSP (Tsunamiken)
  • Full Metal Ross
  • Bumperfront
  • Fat Bear
  • Derek
  • Rayblade

It was mostly a Street Fighter IV night with two stations devoted to the game most of the time.

Glad Chad made it out and got in a few rounds! Keep it up man, it takes a lot of matches and a lot of time to get to a certain level–keep it up

Great to see Ross out at Versis and putting his non-Seth (sorry Ross) characters on display. Your execution and responsiveness keeps getting better and better! Quite a few moments of “nope! you can’t mash crap through my links biatch!” (that’s not what Ross was saying, that’s just what I was imagining him thinking as he nailed difficult links on people). Your Vice is always very enjoyable to watch, your Goeken always sends me to hell hehe. Also, your Ryu is calm like a rock, drives me nuts–it’s like engaging you in a blinking war, but I have a bad habit of smashing a hammer into my own eyes after a set number of seconds :stuck_out_tongue:

Bumperfront, you’re getting more comfortable with the arcade stick  Really hope you get the TE soon (then I’ll be envious). It was a lot of fun fighting you on reverse-comfort hehehe (I was using pad, he was using arcade stick). It was a lot of fun fighting you in general, but I felt those fights were a little bit more telling of our matchup. That said, you and I both have to work on being far-less aggressive. I might be a few weeks ahead of you on that, but it’s something that is killing the both of us in SF4 a lot! hehe

Derek’s getting a lot better, but he has to work on the same thing I have to on SFIV. Being very patient (not aggressive), and being very disciplined (committed to only doing what works–which includes training ourselves on learning only what works in what situations).

Fatbear, I’m really glad I got to see a lot more of your Rufus! Keep it up! Your Dhalsim is always fun too

Ray’s Gen and Guile always make enjoyable matches to watch almost regardless who the opponent is. Also, thanks for the super late night VF5 matches that started at something like 3:15am. I think if we count up all our matches before we started chatting and doing random stuff, I think the score was 17-17 or something like that. Always fun and I actually felt growth in both of our games that night!

-Chanchai

if i didn’t have to work friday, i’d go.

D:

I’m so down for it! If you and Ray bring 360 arcade sticks, I’ll plan on setting up another console for it (so we don’t disrupt the SF4 flow for others).

To further comment on the matches Ray and I had last week… I added a little more to my Lion’s arsenal (this doesn’t mean I increase the damage so much as increase the number of damaging tools I have at my disposal). I have also been spending some time trying to learn more about Vanessa both for the sake of getting better at fighting against her, because I’m personally interested in playing as her at times, and in a way because I was inspired to after the post I wrote for you, Raishinken.

At the moment, all of my Vanessa’s knowledge is concentrated on Defensive Stance, which isn’t good enough since Ray does a great job of mixing up Offensive Stance and some of her greatest damage dealing incorporates OS and Vanessa is extremely deadly when she is mixing the two stances properly.

Furthermore, you have to have played Vanessa in decent depth (or have a damn good memory for sequences) to know when she is stance-shifting. It’s not something that’s easy to just see by the stance alone–you actually need to know her movelist decently if you are fighting against a Vanessa that switches stances quickly and attacks a lot. But there are a few clues in the moves, like if she does certain types of high knee attacks at the end of a sequence of moves, etc…

Even after understanding it, her sidekick (df+K–it’s really more of a “Round Kick”) is still frustrating as hell to deal with because you really want to attack her right away after blocking it or getting hit by it even, but she can punish you in either situations.

In terms of my comments about Ray’s Growth in his game that night, it was mainly that he was adjusting his game really well on the spot and his game felt more deliberate in terms of his retaliation options.

Something I saw a tad bit of, but would like to see a lot more of from Ray is diversity in his opening options. In the middle of the sessions he did opt for more aggressive opening options and mixing it up a bit. I’d love to see him mix it up a lot more. He still has a tendency to over-rely on using “backdash --> evade (and hopefully --> backdash again).”

This has become a way for him to give up a bit of lifebar (and okizeme situation) to me at the beginning of the round, like 80% of the time. The need for diversity here is probably more specific to some characters like Lion (and maybe Akira and a few others). Its weakness is that Lion’s f+K+G and df+K+G will take it out right away and I don’t think the cancel into backdash will work ever against that move. For other characters it’s dashing in with some anti-evade attack.

If you truly want to step away and avoid something like those attacks, the only thing I can think of is “backdash --> jump away” but that is kind of a waste of time and I could probably still rush you a bit. Backdash and carefully blocking what’s coming might be the best option if you want to start on defense. At least against Lion and some others. Against most characters, “backdash --> evade” is really strong and it’s why I incorporate it into my openings as well.

But I’m just letting Ray know that I expect him to use “backdash --> evade” as an opener almost all of the time.

That said, when he got diverse in his opening options, it was really scary for me and it gave him a great initiative advantage in the rounds. Sometimes he’d go aggressive with Vanessa’s db+P which would sabaki a lot of my options (I hate that move). Sometimes he took it upon himself to go aggressive at the start.

He did have diversity in his opening, but again, it felt like way too much of the time he opted for his default opener. I would have gone through hell if he mixed it up even more in the opening, I am sure.

That said, I always love playing the opening and I am pretty confident in my opening attack victories throughout my VF5 matches (including matches against players from other states and countries). It’s probably an advantage Lion has, but I think it has to do with me building a repertoire of diverse offense-openers, but I still have a repertoire of defense-openers too, and I use them as well.
