SF4 PC Lag

EDIT: FIXED!!! Thank you very much to Mr.Miyagi and to all the people who helped out with tips;)

Anyone with a laptop and a wireless connection should get this little program if they find themselves having lag issues in online games (like SF4): http://www.martin-majowski.de/wlanoptimizer/index.php

Even if you are playing with an Ethernet cable, if the wireless is active at the same time, the problem will persist (that was my mistake too!)

It’s called the WLAN Optimizer, and it basically stops Windows Vista / 7 (I think there is an older version for XP too) from periodically checking for wireless connections. That periodical check was (in my case) responsible for the lag in the network connection, since I had ruled out everything else (Anti-Virus, uTorrent, Firewalls, Very High Graphic Settings, etc.).

This “bug” (not really a bug) was called Wireless Zero Configuration “bug” back in Windows XP, because it had a service with that name that was responsible for making this periodical check. So, the solution, back in Windows XP, was to allow XP to connect to the wireless network, and then stop the WZC service in order to stop the periodical check.

In windows Vista/7, though, the service is now called WLAN AutoConfig, and unfortunately, it now embodies both wireless connection and periodical check. That means that you cannot just stop it like you did in Windows XP, or you’ll find yourself wireless-less;)

So, following a tip from Mr.Miyagi, I read all about it and came across this wonderful little app called WLAN Optimizer, that basically cuts out the periodical check part from the WLAN AutoConfig service, and voil, NO LAG!!!

Hope this helps someone with the same problem I was having! I was going NUTS about it!

Thank you to everyone who contributed with their tips, once again! You guys are great!!!

Original Post:

Hi guys,

I can’t understand why I can play lag free with XBL, but not with the PC version, with the same network connection. The games are just too damn laggy… Already tried to deactivate IPv6, but its still a nightmare…

It’s not the graphic settings either. I have even tried to put everything to a minimum.

Windows 7 and windows XP, both laggy.

Any thoughts?

Give computer specs.

Laptop: Asus X57Vn (M50Vn)

CPU: Intel Core?2 Duo Mobile Processor T9400
- clock: 2.53 GHz
- FSB: 1066MHz
- L2: 6Mb

RAM: 4Gb DDR2 800MHz

Video: Nvidia Geforce? 9650GT 1Gb dedicated memory

Like I said, graphics are not the problem, since I have full performance while playing offline.

The person you’re playing against probably has African Online as their internet provider and or their computer is a 1988 Black & Decker toaster.

If you’re gonna play online, play on the 360 since everyone has the almighty same RROD hardware and most people have decent connections.

put all your settings to low, it should fix that way.

I’m beginning to think you’re right…

But it’s weird… I play against people with 5 bars (green connection), and it still produces lag…

nope…

Im not sure if this will work on PC sf4…but it helps on wow and cs for me so it might be worth a try. I don’t know how or why this works but i’v heard it can decrease download speeds, but I havnt seen any change.

use Fixed Framerate instead of Variable.

Atleast for me part of it just seems to be that there is so many less people playing the PC version, so there isn’t as many games that are local/regional and people are more spread out.

This.

And try 3 and 4 bar connections, they’re sometimes better than 5 bar connections for some weird reason…

Make sure u don’t use WLAN.
Make a connection via patch cable.

Does it work fine if your playing offline?
I had a similar problem but i have a AMD processor and AMD Dualcore optimizer fixed it.

I’m using fixed already.

Offline works perfectly. But when I go online, I can play a few seconds without lag, then it all starts to be very laggy, then after some seconds it goes away, then it lags again. I am not downloading anything in the background.

I have an Intel, but thanks for the tip;)

Already tried it. Same thing…

Thanks! Going to try it;)

I’ve posted this in I believe the “official” PC thread but:

There are two types of PC lag.

First, there’s normal network latency and dropped packets. This causes input lag, “teleporting” and disconnects.

Then, there’s actual gameplay slowdown. This happens when (at least) one of the two players has his framerate setting set to “variable” (where framerate here actually refers to engine speed, not graphical speed) and his graphics settings are beyond the ability of his video card. “Variable” basically means “draw every frame and I don’t care how slow you have to go to do it.” This can be solved by making sure both players have the framerate setting on “fixed”. If your system starts dropping frames as a result then it’s because your graphics settings are too high.

Since you said you don’t have any problems offline then it’s probably your opponent’s fault. (If it’s the second lag form – this shouldn’t really be its own paragraph.)

Check your MTU Settings -> http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm

Just changed the MTU to 1430. Going to try it, thanks for the tip! Do you know how to find the optimal setting?

Already tried, the lag still remains…
