I can see the SFIII scene overtaking IV when V comes out.
I’m going to be honest, even though SF4 is my favorite game at the moment, I will probably never play it again once SF5 drops unless it’s just an awful, unplayable mess.
In all fairness (and I may be wrong on this) I’m pretty sure that SF4 series has the strongest scene of any SF in terms of number of players regularly competing this long into its lifetime. A lot of people are ready to try something new, it’s been nearly 7 years and SF4 has been explored EXTREMELY deeply.
ST and 3S have been picked apart pretty damn heavily from even an engine level but SF4 has had a huge fanbase constantly poking at it for a long time. Part of the reason that there keeps being new versions of SF4 is the same reasons there are new versions of WoW instead of a new MMO. SF4 players keep playing the game in huge numbers. Every time Capcom says they are doing the FINAL version of SF4 the game remains super popular and even GROWS in size for another year among competitive scenes and Capcom decides they should update again. SFV would have come sooner if it wasn’t for that.
I think inevitably a lot of people will jump ship to SF5. Even the most die hard ST fans played Alpha and then SF3 when they came out. If the new game turns out tobe more fun then they’ll stick with it, if they don’t enjoy it then they’ll come back to SF4.
SF4 has shown it’s got longevity. SFxT came out and people came right back to SF4 pretty darn quick.
I’m interested in playing SF5 for damn sure, if I don’t like it I might go back to SF4 or a whole different game I dunno.
Compare 3s with SF4 is funny. 3S nearly killed CAPCOM. Not many people played it compare to Alpha when it was released, not mention SF2 and SF4. SF4 is more like SF2, except it become more of a common games. People from all other FG come to play SF4. It has very similar gameplay with SF2, so those SF2 players who refuse to play SF3 come too.
you’ll get wrecked again and again in SF5, that’s for sure, you dont have a winner’s spirit at all
I await the SF4 hipsters to come in after 1 month post release SF5 and say “SFIV was a classic! Go back go SFIV!”
With the game play footage released so far, regardless of it being a super early work in progress I think it’s safe to say SF5 won’t be as drastically different to 4 as 4 was to 3 so that will make it easier for everyone to abandon 4.
I started playing in AE 2012 too. You can take getting beaten over and over again as something bad, but ultimately you can catch up to them in a shorter time than what it took to the people who beat you up to get to that level.
Ultimately it’s an excuse that won’t help you grow as a player, and I don’t mean to be rude at that, I’m just trying to be honest.
I’ll keep playing it if the tournaments I go too keep supporting it, I like playing shit in tournaments. If I go to EVO this year I’ll get into the CvS2 and MvC2 side tournaments god damn and if SF4 has that then yeah why not I’d keep playing it somewhat. If it’s dropped hard though I’ll just play SF5 all day (or if I end up loving it).
yeah I think SF5 just looks like SFIV with better graphics right now
V looks pretty much like IV…but I saw guard break and something that hopefully isn’t XF. I probably won’t look back because Ultra added too many match-ups and DWU set-ups to worry about…
Stylistically it looks lot like SF4, sure, but it already looks pretty different gameplay wise (for better and worse). To put this in perspective, here are the most major changes from each iteration.
ST -> A1:
[] Addition of chain combos
[] Multi-leveled supers
[] Multiple supers per character
[] Alpha counter
[] Air blocking
[] Tech roll
A3 -> SF3:NG
[] Selectable supers
[] Parry
[] Universal overhead
[] Dash/backdash
[] Super jump
[] EX moves
3S -> SF4
[] Focus attack
[] Ultra combo

Huge reversal window
USF4 -> SF5
[] Interactive stages (?)
[] “Trait” system
[] Guard crush
[] Ground bounce (If you want to count this as a major change)
So SF5 is already as different from SF4, as 3S is to SF4 in a mere ~2 minutes of gameplay footage. This is without even counting what many think to be a parry like system that was shown in the trailer (although it could just be an idle animation, no one is sure yet), and the inevitable “alpha counter” that is probably going to be implemented to counteract the guard crush mechanic.
Least innovative? Sure, probably is. Least different gameplay wise from it’s predecessor? I highly doubt it just based off of a couple minutes of gameplay. It already looks way faster than SF4 right off the bat anyway, so if it stays like that then there is already a big enough reason for me to jump ship.
I’ll probably drop it after SF5 is released, I can’t say that i’m in love with SF4, I play it because it has the most competition, that’s it.
I guess it depends on how many people keep playing it for me. If everyone decides to move on to SF5 or something else I probably wont fight it too much.
I’m definitely moving on once SF5 drops.
Idk honestly I find myself still playing AE2012 here and there. You can tell the competition level has dropped because they all play USFIV.
@extravagant
"you’ll get wrecked again and again in SF5, that’s for sure, you dont have a winner’s spirit at all"
Thats pretty unfair. Getting into a game thats older is tough because you’re playing against people that understand the game already, whereas when you take it on from the start everyone is still figuring out the game so theyre more prone to mistakes. When I started SF4 people played it completely differently than they do now.
I’m a character loyalist, and unlucky for me that characters happens to be Hakan.
The chances of Hakan being in SFV are laughable at best. Hope I wrong, but hard to imagine Hakan being in a game that (presumably) doesn’t have Focus Attacks, considering that’s what he was entirely built around.
So I’ll play SFV, especially if there’s a character I like as much as Hakan, but I can’t imagine ever dropping SF4 until the scene is completely dead.
Wasn’t worth answering to. All I said that it’s more fun playing a fighting game when it freshly comes out, opposed to picking it up late into its life, and he comes out telling me I’ll never win EVO, lol.
Thanks though.
It is actually something to consider. The road is only easier in new games for a couple weeks. After that the good players figure out how to play the game and the person who says “I’ll just wait for the next game” goes back to waiting for the next game.
The fresh start is overrated. Smart players will figure it out no matter how late in a game they start.
I wouldn’t say fresh start is overrated at all. Sure the better players will always end up being better later in the games life, but just look at how bad good players were playing Vanilla back in 08. People who pick up the game a year or two later will still be behind for at least 6 or so months until they can grasp how and why everything works the way it does.
