SF3: Third Stike.. a shady history

Semantics. CFE wasn’t arcade, CvS1 died, CvS2 doesn’t have the distribution or playerbase, and GG cabs are usually only in import-savvy arcades. KOF games are for a niche audience even within a niche hobby. 3S is the last arcade 2d 1v1 fighter to penetrate a ton of arcades AND have a large, continuing playerbase.

Yeah that I’d agree with lol.

True, but I think everyone and especially new school gamers got boners by watching Japs playing Yun, Urien, Makato matches. Like for example how almost everyone jumped on the Urien wagon after watching Tokido/RX beast for their first time.
I dunno its just the way I see it.

was there anyone in america doing unblockables/partition combos with urien before evo 2k2? honest question

if not, being introduced to new gameplay from anybody should get people excited, regardless of who displays it.

I remember 3s getting really popular when Anniversary Collection came out. Most people didn’t have dreamcasts.

The hotspots (CA, NE, TX, NY) knew about it and a few Urien specialists were doing it. The general populace wasn’t too keen on 3S at the time IIRC though, so probably about 50 people saw that match and went, “Oh, that” and everyone else went “WTF?”

Gotta love your post man, I completely agree with everything you’ve said here, too bad I ain’t a prem member, otherwise I would’ve repped you as well.

uhhhh thats a terrible example because escaping a corner unblockable is braindead easy if you’re decent  i doubt justin even knew how to counter it before.

plus the hypocrisy in your post is pretty funny.

id say more but…

thank you… my reasoning for making this thread was solely for information on the dubious rise of Third Strike… the mvc2 examples i used were in no way meant to downplay 3S, only act as a barometer gauging the game japan most likely would have picked up had they had any interest in mimicing the american scene.

It would be hypocrisy if I finished my post with something to the effect of “Marvel is so awesome because it doesn’t have XYZ crappy thing that 3S has.” But I didn’t. You cannot divine my opinion of 3S (or any game I mentioned) from the details in what I actually posted. It is generally annoying whenever proponents of any game incorrectly use another game’s purported flaws as support for their pet game. Especially when there are analogous examples within the very game they’re supporting. And this happens just all day everyday here. Meanwhile, I presented a possible explanation not yet stated for the continued success of 3S, which is, you know, this thread’s topic.

As for escaping the corner unblockable, I can only assume you mean down-parrying the reflector on wakeup so the knee hit then floors you. No argument that this is easy, but that doesn’t change that my example hinted that many people wowed by 3S tactics like this over the years are the same people who will point to heavily damaging combos and infinites in other games as signs of competitive unworthiness. And that also doesn’t change that midscreen Urien unblockables, working off the same glitch/principle, have no easy solution if you’re not named Akuma, so I’m not sure what you’re getting at.

If you actually have something to say, I’m all ears.

I’m not personally seeking to compare the games at all, and I didn’t mean you when I mentioned people comparing Marvel/3S.

And, like, for the people talking about Japanese Marvel play, or lack thereof, there ARE good Japanese Marvel players, like Takayuki. The game just didn’t catch on there. There doesn’t need to be a ‘reason’ and it doesn’t mean that other fighting games ‘won’ some imaginary contest. It just didn’t take. They like dating sims, we don’t. We like FPS games, they don’t. There doesn’t need to be a ‘reason.’

i was speaking on the fact that people love to hijack threads with completely stupid comparisons that have nothing to do with the subject matter at hand(3S vs MVC2) … and the way you put it mirrored what i was thinking, so i simply wanted to say thanks:)

YEAH BUDDY!

That couldn’t have summed up my reasons for playing 3s more. To a tee even.
It just feel like you HAVE to play 3s sometimes, doesn’t it?? I don’ like the game much but very few people play anything that i enjoy (Cvs2, St and VS recently)where im at (colorado). Your just screwed. You want to play your game, but not by yourself. You want to play people but, not in this game hahahahahaahah :looney:

actually theres 2 mvc2 cabs at alpha station :looney: and one at a random taito arcade in akibahara. both are linked cabinets and not relegaed to the “if its a single machine, its 1p play only” type of cabinet. randommmm

on topic a bit, i agree, lots of og’s have quit this game 5 times over and came back because everyone fucking plays 3s. I know I have even if i dont like the game.

out of all the sf3 games when they were released, 2nd impact was the only sf3 game to ge rspect, broken as it was at the time. ppl loved the crazy rushdown with top tier tho.

I find it funny that people are now realizing that their first impression of the game was probably the right one.

Yes, I am dogging it.

3S is the antithesis of OG Street Fighter

If you want OG Street Fighter, play ST or AE. Or even CvS2. If you want a different experience, play 3S. I don’t understand people who’s sole argument for not liking a game is, “this game doesn’t play like that game”. Huh? Go play “that” game if you “that” experience.

You play the game because you like it, not because you are “following a trend”.

There was a guy here in Austin who dogged every SF game as “Not real Street Fighter”… A2, A3, NG, 2I, 3s… After talking to him for a while his idea of “true street fighter” was Alpha 1. seriously… Also 3s in Austin didn’t get big in a vacuum, 2i and NG were both popular here for some obscene reason.

Damn i was wondering the same thing why would you play a game if you dont like it???:looney:

“step too close kid and ya might get shot!”

a luv 3s

You what got me into 3rd Strike? Udon comics. After reading those I really wanted to play SF. Hell I bought CVS2 and AC. But I stuck with AC because it did everything better. I prefer the combos, parry, and super-cancel. Not to mention the level of detail in the animation. And it was the best thing in detail next to the comcis.
Anyone else here got into SF3 because of the comics?
