SF3: Third Stike.. a shady history

I think one of the main reasons 3rd Strike became fairly popular, because it was unplayed for so long. It was still “new” to us. No one really ventured into the game. 3rd strike–to me, was alway a great game. It baffled me why people ignored it.

When the Japanese came over and exposed not only us, but what the game could be potentially and at the time was about, it sparked interest in alot of people. I’ve never seen so many people who wanted to play Urien, until Tokido. Rightfully so, majority have never seen that, or half of the things in 3rd Strike. I liked the game before, but the more I saw, the much more interested. I can only imagine what others thought.

Trying to think of other reasons other than what’s been stated.

All I can come up with is it really kind of changed the pace of 2D fighters. Not kind of, it did. Whether you prefer it or not, it became much more of an in-close fighter, much more like brawling imo. Spacing became different and had less emphasis. Projectiles were made fairly useless at a distance (Poor Remy). And the focus kind of switched to the in-close, duking it out mixed with parries here and there. It was now much more “safe” to go in on an opponent rather than wait for a knockdown to begin the crossups and general oki games.

I think for that reason, it was so foreign compared to other 2Ds that it caught the attention of many players. This new style is what made it more new-player friendly too. They could bypass all the “footsies” and “traps” and get right to the run of things.

EDIT: Credit where credit is due. I got a lot of those opinions and that info from Half-ro preeching to me all this time about SF2 and 3S lol.

so by your logic, all they need to do is sell one console, but as long as they sell millions in software its all good right, lol.

Its simple really, if no one is buying the system anymore, then games will stop being made for it, thus a dead console.

Its actually quite susprising how people get so upset over the internet, maybe they should go out more and find some real stuff to be mad about.

It’s simple…they need to make Street Fighter IV already. I mean, they better hurry before the ship sets sail. GTA IV, SC IV, DMC IV, MGS IV, [I think I’m forgetting one…] Guitar Hero…IV? LoL…

But yeah, I’d play as Mel Masters and use his Shoryu-Cannon til the cows come home.

[/sarcasm]

I never said anyone makes money off a console, so i dunno why your crying about that?

All i’m saying is they sold more consoles, so more people will be buying games for that system. Whats not to understand?

I am no expert, but if you only get your info from egm, then maybe you should branch out to other sources.

Also why you taking things so personally? Relax its just the internet.

Finally if you got a problem with me, then pm me about it, i refuse to be baited into a flame war.

LOL OK?

If you only get your gaming info from egm, then you need help.

You obviously have no counter argument for what i said, so you gotta start with shit talking. People who have to resort to shit talking to try and win an argument have already lost in my books.

Man i wish i was as cool as you, i mean who woulda thought calling someone gay over the internet was so damn original and witty.

Done with this thread, too many kids, which is ironic considering your older than me, lol.

ummm the dc has the easiest bootlegging on earth and it was on eof the biggest factors in its death. No boot disk or mod chip was needed just some cd-r’s and the fact that you could burn it in any program…

bad timing for 3s

came out during the height of mvc1/a3 popularity

then mvc2 came out not too long after

when justin ran mvc2 for a while and a3 died 3s became popular since there was nothing else out there

I just edited the idiot posts so don’t worry Sorry, there will be no retarded trolling/childish insults on my watch. Fools need to grow the fuck up seriously.

thanks bro:)

3S is popular because ‘mainstream’ internet talk was going around from the OG peeps that it was a turtle throw fest, and the whole game at high level degenerated into people zoning while waiting for the other person to jump or poke.

The old newsgroup is full of it. Hell, check out S-Kill’s rant on it from a few years ago. Should be round here somewhere.

US vs Japan and the 2k2 evo showed everyone that high level 3S was nothing like everyone whined about, and people got interested. This ALONG with video recording and video compression getting easier combined with file sharing, got the potential of the game to reach its audience.

PLUS the tech savvy community + Youtube + Camera Phones + Vid Compression all kept the good footage comin’. This all came together with Justin vs Daigo. 3S became widely known outside the SRK bubble and regular guys could look up the huge 3S footage already around and it got more interest.

AND anyone saying 3S is ass or deep as the abyss needs to get their head checked. Either your pissed cause no one is playing your favourite game anymore, or your just ignorant about this shit all together.

Out.

if you honestly think about the fighting scene as a whole we all know where it all started
as there’s really no need to explain but as a whole, the roots were originally street fighter II which yet to this day is still full force. think about, this is where the majority of us got down learned from scratch, spending endless hours of quarters going to arcades, pizza joints (me = nicho’s pizza in bell ca, place of origin where it started for me when i was a teen) and even playing on the super nintendo which was good back in the day. now it’s just been revolutionized with so many aspects, different titles, some weak, others good (this is regarding other games) that it’s taking us to the point of being competitive & being known
amongst others. heck, I’ll never forget the tourny they held @ scandia in ontario ca when I was in jr high and kicking everyones ass on street fighter 2 turbo (this was our graduation party trip or some shit like that I forget what it was called back then, been too long). ANyhow, the point is, Lots has changed since then and now it’s just a matter of being the best you can be

guess they were right because thats what the game is like now

of course if you have someone high skilled vs someone low skills (japan vs usa 02) you can do tons of fancy stuff

but once everyone gets closer in skill level the game goes back to being a turtle throw fest

Yeah, pisses me off so bad when RX turtles and spams those cheapass throws against the best opponents. Damn him to hell.

Dude… Some ppl just like to play 3s. Some ppl like to play ST. Some ppl like to play Tekken.

How did this thread turn into 3S>ST or ST> 3S.

Simple truth is the game did not have a huge scene in the US until we saw the depth the depth that the Jnp players played with… What so worng with that?

They just showed us the “rabbit hole.” Once we new it was there, we went ape shit on the game. It is as much of the US fighting game scene as it is part of Jpns.

Part of the 3S success comes from the US scene. We definately made part of the game our own.

Ya I use Dudley and I win by throwing all the time, cuz u know, thats his most damaging combo.

<3 Avena Lee!!!

I win by throwing roses.

3s appealed to me more, mvc2 back in the day had too much shit happening and I didn’t have the patience for it.

yea…me too.

almost every thread legitimately discussing a fighting game and not some bullshit like sprites or character background stories turns into a pissing contest between noobs as to why their game is better than another… usually because they lack the technical skill to play the game they hate.

… that is the short answer.

So what do you fanboys think of someone like me, who plays 3s, MvC2, and GG with above average profeciency (not pro though ), and started out on SFII back in the day?

Parries are cheap and overused/overpowered? Do you know how many scrubs I beat because they try and parry everything? And besides, parrying is just another form of defense, just like the different “zones” of blocking and anti-throws common to all fighting games.

Tick throws in ST are too good? Yes, but you can use them too. The essential skill is getting into a position where you can employ them properly, which is related to mindgames.

Does being noob-friendly make 3s somehow “common” or unsophisticated? Get off your high horse, elitists. Remember how fun SFII was back in the beginning? When you and your friends would get into epic fireball fights because you couldn’t get the input for a DP properly? When every second move would be a sweep because you didn’t know how to throw? It was simple, but it was fun. Like many other great games like chess or poker, the key phrase for 3s here is “Simple to learn, hard to master”.

The way I see it, 3s is very much a gateway fighter. A steep learning curve is scary for new players, and the last thing the FG community needs is to turn away support. As they pick up the necessary knowledge and skills they can move on to more advanced techniques and strategies in 3s AND the steep learning curve of most other fighters is drastically reduced. Suddenly, a whole plethora of different games becomes accessible. Can you imagine picking up MvC2 without having played any other fighting game before?

So there’s my little rant, rhetorical questions and all. Just trying to put some fresh perspective on things. We’re all here because of the same thing: the love of mortal (albeit virtual ) combat that taxes our technical skill and mental dexterity to the very limits and the drive to improve. Let’s not lessen that ideal with petty squabbles.
