They’re all new and fundamentally sound. But the “freshness” factor definitely plays a big part in Japan popularity. Also, the anime theme among all three of those title might’ve helped…
I thought people played Third Strike because it’s a street fighter game?
That’s why I play it anyways.
i play 3s for the rap-esque intro…
can we not agree to the fact that SF3 is so popular due to the fact its the most technical and advanced street fighter ever released. And the reason it never got the shine of light is because only the dreamcast had it ? which was dying [not that it should have]
and maybe its popular now because of the ps2/xbox re-release ? Same way metal slug seems to SOUND more popular now when it was always great and well known but now with the ps2/psp re-releases all the kids think its some new invention
Nope, all SF3 games were totally slated back in the day, just go on alt.games.sf2 newsgroup via groups.google.com and run a couple of searches dating back during the 1997-1999 era, and its full of topics saying how all SF3 games are crap, and that your better off continuing to play A2, then later on A3.
Also Dreamcast wasn’t even avaliable in the US untill after 3s had already hit the arcades, so how could it be a dying console. Infact i think the dreamcast sold extremely well initially, it didn’t start dying untill the vastly superior PS2 hit the market.
Disclaimer: I am not hating on Dreamcast, infact i think its one of the best consoles ever, but it just had no chance against the power of the PS2.
dumb thread…
well r3ko the original poster was stating that only reason sf3 got popular is because of japenese players and i feel its because of the re-release if anything
Wut?? The hardest practical techniques in 3S aren’t as hard as important V-isms in A3/CvS2 or things like fast flying/reflying with Sentinel consistently. Links in 3S are like Ken low strong, Chun low fwd, Remy/Ryu/Akuma stand fwd, aka easymode. Compare that to CvS2 Blanka/Sagat/Rolento/etc. links, compare that to Tekken just frames, compare that to Virtua Fighter crouchdash buffering. The hardest it gets is Yun close fwd SJ cancel super, Chun close RH SJ cancel super, kara palms, charge partitioning. And a large portion of the cast has no real strategy until they have meter, where the strategy then becomes “blow meter.” Even the top 3 has one completely fleshed out character - Ken, who is not coincidentally the best character in the game without meter. Meanwhile his two friends at the top are walking supers, and the game has like five or six characters that even approach being as fleshed out as the important characters in other popular games.
I’m not hating on 3S, I came from the Austin SF scene and I loved it as much as anyone at one point. But this is like me defending my Civic by saying it’s as fast as a Z06, or like saying I like living in south Texas for the cool climate. Some of you guys need to actually learn more than one game, and I mean actually learn them, so you can see that they’re often a lot more similar than you think. Pick your poison and stop making obviously flawed comparisons.
Sosage had some good points, Sabin, Goodmourning too, I think me as well. That were on-topic, anyway. If I missed someone who wasn’t just mouth-breathing I’m sorry but I’m not skimming again.
It’s not.
Dr.Deelite to be far to MaybeMemories i think he was refering to the pure SF games, SF2, SFA and SF3, but hes still wrong in that its not the most technical and advanced of the bunch.
Yeah…3rd Strike I’m sure is also popular mainly because of the ease to just learn and understand the game. You dont have to worry about perfecting 2 frame link combos in order to just be competitive. The parrying system gives the game kind of a leeway for you to get attacks in. All you have to do is simply understand when your opponent may attack you and you can get a hit in. You may not win the match but it gives you a sense of momentum even if you dont truly understand the game. Not to mention the parrying system has made for some epic matches that have gone down in history as clearly epic matches. Matches that show off 3S’s ability to allow a match to turn around at any point. Something that old school SF players aren’t very fond of but newer players find much easier to adopt and have fun with.
Yet…that’s all the same reason why the game is tough to master. You have to understand how to deal with all of the “randomness” in 3S in order to be successful and the rest of the cast isn’t that much far off from the top tier as far as competitiveness in tourneys. You need to understand how to fight vs. almost every character in the game or someone who is strong with a lesser used character can just come and beat you. It’s definitely a game of thinking or “yomi” levels where you really have to know what your opponent knows you know you’re going to do. Especially when all it takes is one good guess to turn things around. You have to be good at creating abstract strategies that are completely backwards of what is traditional SF play. There is stuff that just works because it’s good but the parry system forces you to come up with new ways to out think the opponent.
couldn’t you just say reading your opponent? Or does this mean something else?
Anyways, I couldn’t agree more with you deviljin, you got it down.
Don’t you ever get tired of being so fucking misinformed about everything?
The Dreamcast sure as shit didn’t die because of the PS2. The single biggest factor was the rampant piracy once people figured out how to the rip the gd-roms.
Why do you always insist on running your mouth about shit you know nothing about? I wouldn’t mention it if it wasn’t constant theme in all your posts, but here it is again in the usual condescending tone.
this man gets it
Wow your example is pretty bad.
And the fact that ppl are agreeing with u and repping really just shows how stupid and misinformed they are.
Ya, and excatly where are those shit games now?
Dr. Deelite i was talking about Street Fighter only. And Rock Lee in my honest opinion it definately is. Im not sure how one would give SA series the crown in this matter, with red parries and un blockables, 60 fps? More detailed sprites, better res??
let’s have a 3s fireball war, or a ST parry fest
dang i didnt see this thread, i remember back in the day when i used to frequent the Portland Oregon Tilt at Lloyd Center, (1995 and forward) no one and i mean no one touched the street fighter 3 games, this is truth i never saw someone playing those games, i would always go and try it out, but i did not know what the hell was going on so, i did not pay attention too:wonder:
:wtf: did you not read the thread?? The japanese players were the main catalysts as to why so many people are playing now.
