Dragonslayers in Belfast run ranking battles every month. You should check out Neo Empires Northern Ireland section too.

Dragonslayers
Neo Empires Northern Ireland Forum

.meducation. may I add you to my XBL friends list?
likwidboy if you are in Belfast you should make it down to Dragonslayers some time. It would be good to meet more locals into fighting games!
You guys can add me on MSN if you would like further info.

yeah there are a few ok arcades here!

but no street fighter machines at all!

they have the new tekken boxes(which are quite old now) but no one even touches them!

yeah add me on xbl,

i have a ps3 but i havnt got the game for it at this point!

i’ll check out dragon slayers, haven played arcades in a long time!

i added you to msn its meds on there 2!

Cool, will add you on both then! Dragonslayers = consoles as opposed to arcades.

Yeah, dragonslayers is a gaming club held in the Queen’s University Student Union. RanBats are held there each month by Ryuta and I’m the “electronic gaming co-ordinator” i.e. the mug who’s supposed to run the games. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you have any questions about the weekly running of DragonSlayers then feel free to ask myself or Ryuta! It’s all console stuff but there’s a good variety of fighting games available, among other console games.

hey

I would be interested in creating fighting games community in Dublin. I lost all my sparing partners and now looking for some ppl to play.

I used to play sf3rd strike, still can i guess. haven’t touched sf4(i heard it sux:), but I’ll give it a shot.

But my main game was, still is and will be  Guilty Gear!!!

i am badly looking for sparring partners now. Getting ready for Stockholm European SBO qualification in 2 weeks

Anyway i would like to create or join GG scene in Ireland if any.

>Cloudpaul

is this Anji in your avatar?? Don’t get my hopes up  If u play GG in Belfast, i don’t see a problem in coming over on my day off to check yourselves out:). I got access to cheap airline tickets:)

Hey there, Koji. That is indeed Anji in my avatar! We have some GG players up here and a fair amount of SF3:3S players. I’d love to play another GG player from the isle, we play every tuesday night and some saturdays too, when there’s a RanBat on (sadly I can’t attend these myself but there’s plenty of other dudes there to play :p). If you ever feel like popping up to have a few games then let us know and we’ll try our best to give you a warm welcome.

Hi BurstKoji,

Chap you can check out what the Dragonslayers ranking battle lot are upto here: Neo Empire NI Forum. The games for this season are: SFIII3S, GGXXAC, CVS2 and Melty Blood Act Cadenza. I suggest checking out boards.ie for any locals. I found a thread there while searching for other Irish Ranking Battles. atm there does not seem to be anything solid on the go however. It might be worth a look to see if there is anyone you could network with. On this thread, another chap seems interested in GG.

Hope that helps you. If you really mean to start something in the Republic, please keep us up in the North aware of what you are doing. We would visit you guys no problem! Feel free to add me on MSN, just let me know its you in your opening message lol

Hi SF 4 and Super Turbo player from Westmeath here.

There is not much of a fighting scene in Ireland I’m afraid. Infact there is not much of a scene in any genre of video games. The most popular competitive games would be Counter Strike Source and Call of Duty 4 and you be hard pressed to find any other community with a dozen or more serious players, perhaps Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004 qualify in that regard and Halo 3 on the consoles.

Here is what I know of with regards fighting games and the Irish gaming scene.

A boards.ie member* Da Bounca* hosts Soul Caliber 4 and Street Fighter 4 competitons in the Xtreme Gaming Cafe on Liffey Street in Dublin City center.
I believe the general plan is to host one a month. If you read through the threads on boards.ie it looks like the last event was not to well organised and was more of a friendly sparing session. The games are played on the Xbox 360 but they plan to use a mix of PS3 and Xbox 360’s in the future.
Thread here.
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055374144

Gamecon which is a lan party held in Dublin (Lucan Spa Hotel) held a Street Fighter 4 competition at its last event between the 6th and 8th of March. The two people in the finals where the event organiser Zekiel and Jazzy and while I know these two people and they are reasonable Super Turbo players they both played SF 4 for the first time at that event so as you can imagine the competition standard was probably not very high. No idea of the format of the tournament or what console it was held on. The event is held usually 2 to 3 times a year depending on sponsors and the organiser having time.
Website at this link www.gamecon.ie
(there is no after event coverage on the site unfortantly)

Then we have Midlans which I was a co-founder and admin of. A lan party held in the community center of Street Co.Westmeath. Despite being in the arse end of nowhere this event holds the record for largest lan party in Ireland with over 200 people attending one event, although recent events have been about half that size. I have run Super Turbo competitions off MAME at this event in the past and we have had 30-50 entrants into the competition which has proved very popular among attendees. Having said that the vast majority of players only enter for a laugh in between the competitions of other games (most show up for CS:S or COD 4 but its a quick competition that does not take up much time so alot enter for the hell of it). The Super Turbo comeptitions tend to have maybe only half a dozen serious-ish players. Nevertheless having won the last competiton the prize was decent (a ?150 Sennheiser headset) so for it was worth entering even though the standard of opposition was low. The next event should be held withing 2-3 months and I hope to run a Street Fighter 4 (PC if possible otherwise PS3) and HD Remix (Playstation 3) competitions with rules similar to the evolution fighting series. Website here www.midlans.net

That leaves two other Irish gaming events. Galwaylan which uses this forum to promote its events. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=428
Not sure if there is any interest in fighting games there but you can keep your eye open. They should be hosting another event soon enough.

All the events listed above are primarily PC based but they all have some console gaming at them.

And the console lan World Gamer Live. http://www.worldgamerlive.com/ They have hosted lans with around 50 players in the past.
Again no idea what interest is like there but browse the forums and you might spot gamers interested in fighting games. Its the only gaming community in Ireland with an anyway active forum after boards.ie.

Now thats out of the way I can list a few Irish players for you.
With Street Fighter 4 there has been a jump in activity with regards fighting games but most revolves arounds SF 4. However if you got to know some of them you might find they have interest in other fighting games.

Most of these players are casual players though.

Xbox 360 player list

Playstation 3 player list

There is two large threads on boards.ie about Street Fighter 4
here

and here

Finally this thread over on the Irish Nintendo forums wiffey.ie has a mix of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 players listed in a thread about SF IV
http://www.wiffy.ie/forums/gaming/4849-street-fighter-iv.html

Now I’m off to watch the Australian Grand Prix. If you want I can come back later and list a few Irish players of note in various SF games that actually know how to play the game.

Otherwise sorry for being so long winded.

Man it is great to hear from you. Thank you for all the relevant information there. I read (and posted in as mr_kyle) the SCIV and SFIV thread on boards.ie, but like you say the plans didnt seem that solid. It would be great for a wee venture down, there would need to be solid plans to make it worth going.

If enough like minded people put their heads together the Republic could have a great fighting game scene. I will be keeping an eye out for developments!

Thanx for info Azza, GREAT stuff!!

Sic! no Guilty Gear players around…i guess i have to go to Belfast to check out Dragonslayers level :stuck_out_tongue:

I know one thing…there is plenty of Japanese students around local colleges and i am f#$%in sure they play fighting games. And as everybody knows, japs are the best!! Maybe it would be wise to open fighting games threads on some DCU,UCD,Trinity forums???

I have to find somebody!!!

greets guys

Hi, saw this linked on my thread www.neoempire.com

I’m a street fighter player from wicklow, usually seen on SF 4 or HD Remix but can be found on 2df aswell. (alex is my homeboy)

I’m well up for getting some competition going, preferably in the flesh, Dublin is a very doable destination for me train wise, and I’m free for 2 weeks starting next friday (3rd april) so If any one wants to meet up any time around then then that’s sound.

I post more on neo empire than here but you can PM me on either and I’ll recieve it.

Gamertag is Owwmykneecap, I also use this on 2df.
(Gamertag is full so send me a message and i’ll chop some dead wood and add anyone on friday.)

whats up lads
good to see some interest in this!i play a bit of guilty gear man i’m not much good but i can always improve=)… i’ll add everyone on xbox for a few games anyway! and thanks for all the info
Azza much appreciated

Hey guys, just adding to the numbers of Irish fighting game players.I’m from the south and live in Belfast and have been playing ST since forever,I play on ggpo/2df/xbl but I’m enjoying IV at the minute.

I wasn’t aware of the Belfast dragonslayers ranbats but I’m terrible at 3s anyway having never given it the attention it deserves.

Just to add in here, another SF lover from Dublin. Some of you already know me from 3rd strike on 2DF and others (azza) from boards.ie and SF4 on PSN.

Someone mentioned DCU there. The gamesoc there ran a SF4 tourny the other week which I missed :annoy: Apart from that they just have general console gaming going every Wednesday where apparently SF4 is played a lot.

But in fairness, A I think you have to be DCU game soc member to even play so I don’t think it’d ever work as a place for us SF nuts to play.

and B the gamesoc seem to really only be into halo, CS, guitar hero and quake 3 so even though I joined it, I’ve done fuck all in it. I get the impression I’d be the only one into SF4 in the whole Uni.

Although I’ve yet to get to the console gaming session they have every Wednesday so I might be pleasantly surprised.

Lastly just to say, I’ve been pushing really hard for a dedicated fighting game section on boards.ie. I think this would really help the irish scene and there is currently a lot of support for it but the mods seem to be hoping we’ll just get tired of asking.

Well fuck that says I!

So if any of you guys are boards members show some support!

Well chap be sure and give us a shout on our Neo Empire section should you feel like popping in.

Cool the DCU Gameing Society don’t sound a million miles away from QUB Dragonslayers!

If you guys started posting on Neo Empire youd get an Irish thread there in no time. Since it collects players from the UK (NI included) it would make sense for arranging things.

Story lads! :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah i’m very much into the fighting game scene now for a few years but only play SF seriously, & all the rest casually, i.e not really great at them, but i know the basics.

My games tend to include:

SF2 (All)
SF3
SF4
Garou: MOTW
GGXXR
CVS2
DOA4 (Barely)
Battle Fantasia (Definatly better than SF4 IMO)
Tekken DRO

I’d be very much interested in meeting up for a big session in the Xtreme Gaming Centre on Liffey Street if you’d all make the effort & come down from Belfast & Westmeath etc?

If anyone wants to play, feel free to add me on XBL or PSN!

GT = Xinkai
PSN = Xinkai_SAF

I could bring a few friends to make numbers for a meet up aswell.

See you online lads!!!

A large update (aka a wall of text) on the Irish scene
Okay myself and a few others are trying to get some sort of fighting scene established in Ireland.

(1) Dedicated boards.ie fighting forum

Our first step is we are currently trying to get a fighting game forum established on boards.ie

This would a significant step in helping an Irish scene develop, as boards.ie has one if not the biggest active Irish gaming communities. Unfortantly at the moment without a dedicated forum alot of information is getting lost as several fighting game threads spring up and dissappear on the various different forums over on the games section of boards.ie

Consolidating onto one forum well stop this and make information easiar to find.
The forum we hope will have all the several sticky threads containing up to date information like listings of Xbox Live and PSN usernames (with game lists matching their usernames) as well as GGPO and 2DF login names, listings of arcades around Ireland both North and South (including what games they have) as well listings of meet ups and tournaments throughout the country.

The creation of a forum has been raised with the appropriate people so we expect to have a positive decision too but you can express your support by posting in this thread in favour of the idea. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055404114

(2) Online Play
www.esports.ie is running an online SF IV compeition for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game.

Rules can be found here
http://www.esports.ie/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=92&Itemid=97

To sign up you need to create a esports.ie account and leave a comment with your online account name on the news page for the SF IV tournament for your respective format (or both if you have the two versions and want to enter both).

There is no prizes for this. Its just a starter to test the water for future events and there is nothing more than pride at stake. If its successful it could lead to more online tournaments in both SF IV and other games.

While I know some of the more hardcore players are not too found of online fighting games being as they are a poor subsitute for actual meet ups, I believe for the foreseeable future its a nessecary evil. Since there is currently so few players in Ireland restricting oursleves to offline play would result would signifcantly limit the quaility of opposition we can compete and learn against. Although there will be certainly some actual meet ups around the country in the near they would currently be too infrequent to develop a high level of play.

As well as the above point, online play gives us a chance to find Irish players who are isolated from the world of fighting games and gaming in general and potentially get them interested in attending meet ups and competitions around the country. If you come across Irish players online point them in the direction of a thread like this either here or on boards.ie or the Neo Empire forums.

(3) Meet ups, competitions and Ranbants.
There has been several fighting game tournaments held within the last 2 months in Ireland. Here are a couple of examples.

Firstly as previously mentioned we had a Street Fighter 4 tournament at Gamecon 14 on the 6th of March in the Lucan Spa Hotel. I don’t really have any details of the competition but I know that standard wasn’t too high as first time players won it.

Tr Na Smash 2 was held on April 4th. A Smash Brothers Brawl event held by the game society of UCD.
Details here
http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=203067

On the 11th of this month we had two compeitions run on the same day. In Dublin the Extreme Gaming Cafe ran an SF IV competition. I attended this along with 21 others. Most where locals from Dublin but we had a few attendees from further afield. Four players can down from Northern Ireland. Here is my write up of the event copied from boards.ie

Later that day Captain Ryuta of this very thread ran along with a few others the usually bi monthly QUB Dragonslayers Ranking Battles. 3rd Strike and Guilty Gear where the order of the day for this event.

Results and details can be found here.
http://www.neoempire.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2396

Captain Ryuta might give us more details as I wasn’t attending but fair dues to the guys who attended both events that day North and South.

Promo’s for this event can be found here. Its so good even the Hulkster attends!

Finally just this weekend there was another SF IV competition in the Gamestop store in Limerick (not sure which of the 3). No idea how many entered or the format. All I know is that the guy name Garak001 won never dropping a round and 2nd-4th where all boards.ie members.

From the above you can see that there is a reasonable demand for fighting game tournaments and probably enough interest to establish a reasonable scene. Again we need to consolidate infromation and get it out to people who might be interested.

We have q-con http://www.q-con.org.uk/ coming up which will have a big fighting game scene, as well as the continuation of the frequent QUB Dragonslayers Ranking Battles.

It looks like Ireland will have a new lan starting up soon (run by a Dublin airsoft team). While the first lan is expected to be a casual event and feature at least 50 partipants I hope to see a SF IV compeition held there. If your interested in attending you can request what games be played on this thread. Not to many firm details up yet. But the organisers are mean’t to be well organised, so hopefuly they can establish a good event.
http://ww.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055529531

What I hope along with support from people like you is to badger other events like Gamecon, Galway lan, World Gamer Live, Midlans and The World Cyber Game to run offical or unoffical fighting game competitions. The more support I have from the fighting game community the more likely we can go to the organisers and get the games we want ran and get these events advertised and people going. The more demand and actual attendance at these events the better prizes that can be allocated to winners.

Thats why if there is any events on you guys know of even small events, lets get the word out as best we can.

Okay before you guys explode from reading this I’ll stop.

Again if you made it this far thanks for reading!

Woah looong post Azza but cheers it was a very interesting read

So long as the events are properly communicated to the Cork area I can try to muster up some people, I’ve introduced a few people to the game and the scene itself, and also spoken to a group of lads who I met randomly at a house party who seem semi-serious and I guess would be up for traveling up to Dublin to participate

Communication I guess is the big part, I, for one at least, didn’t even know there was this thread or the boards.ie threads so yeah, it’s big progress!

/Tsu

your welcome:rofl:
one again you are a fountain of information,

i heard about that tournie in town but didnt get out of bed till 2 so was 2 late!

you seem to be all about furthering or startin a beat em up scene over here and i’m
100 percent with ya if ya need any help man, i think its a great idea…

i never realized how much was going on in this country before you start posting in this thread,it seems there is alot of interest but not too many ways of gettin the info to people who should know!
