SF players in Ireland (Dublin)

More heads up here.

The Extreme Gaming Cafe is hosting another SF IV competition at 1pm on Saturday the 2nd of May.

No mention of the competition on the there wesite but was mentioned here on boards.ie
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=59921425&posted=1#post59921425

If the same as last time top prizes will be 250 with runner up claiming 100 and 50 for third.

But realisticly attendance will nearly have to double from 22 to over 40 to make the event a worth while endavour for the organisers.

So spread the word.

You can read about the last event in my post above.

Will post up more details as I get them.

It ws held in the city centre store.

24 players single elimination until 3 remained. Because of the uneven number, a few of the players that were knocked out in the QFs were given another go until 4 remained. Semis were best of 5 rounds and final was best of 7 rounds. Skill level was pretty poor as it was an impromptu tournament which drew many people off the street who had no experience. Apart from the 3 boards.ie players, there were only 4 other players who had any idea of the basic controls.

The final was myself (Guile) vs a nice guy called Cathal (Ryu). Boards members SeanderMann and BurningEclipse reached the top 4. Top prize was a copy of Halo Wars, Ninja Blade and 3 months subscription to Xbox Live.

Good fun and a decent way to spend a couple of hours.

Let me ask you…what is the preferred tournament format? If players were to attend a tournament, how long would they hope to be playing for and what cost would they be willing to pay to play in a tournament with great prizes?

Well the format most people would prefer is either group stage (qualification pools) using either single or double elimination rules followed by a semi final bracket consisting of double elimination until we produce a winner.

Something similar to this.
http://evo2k.com/?page_id=45

The system used by most commonly in the QUB Dragonslayers Ranbant which would be Irelands most regular fighting group is a group stage system where everyone players each other once and then moves onto double elimination after the group stages are over.

As well as that the competition would be seeded so top players would avoid each other in the opening group stages.

With a double elimation system in place through out a tournament you would have to loose at least 2 games before been knocked out. With single elimination in the group stages you will get at least 3 games before being knocked out or moving on to the next round.

As for the amount you would pay, the time you would get and the prizes depends on how many people enter and what sort of establishment is running it. If its a dedicated private event or a lan you would get in as many games as you want practically. Unoffical tournaments can be ran at them as well, like an iron man winner stays on tournament. If its a business like an internet cafe or game store they may not have time to dedicate such time to a tournament as it would interfere with regular business so they would probably want to run it as quick as they can which is understandable.

For instance at the Extreme Gaming Cafe after the tournament was over in about 2 hours people had the option of paying 2.50 an hour to use a console. Split 2 ways its for a 2 player sessions its quite cheap and you can get alot of games in for little money. Having said that a 20 desposit was required to use a console which of course you get back when your done.

Prizes like anything depend on how many you get participating.

might as well reply here too…

i’ll probably be heading up to this tourny in Dublin, so if any of you wanna try bust my head offline, bring it.

As for boards.ie, I agree having a presence there is important but it is very broad, badly organisied and impossible to find anything there.
So continue to push for the fighting game section, but I think people need to post on www.neoempire.com

It’s a good site, great info, as local as you will find and if enough people post they will give you an irish section no bother.
(hell there is already a NI section, that would basically be one and the same.)

Regardless of how well organized the tournament was, its still better than nothing in Ireland ya know!
i mean lets hope it gets alot better but for now i think its good we have something!

Hi All. I never posted in this section before, just found it this morning so i thought I’d come in and put it up to any 2D Street fighter old hands lurking around the place who want their go . I’m in North Dublin, and am up for some XBL games on street fighter 2/3. I generally don’t travel in ireland anymore to attend “real world” gaming meets, because i’ve been burned lots of times in the past with badly organised, crap standard events with poor competition, but i’m always up for some good online games.

If anyone’s interested, just add me to your XBL friends list. My XBL GT is MackDaddi.

I’ve been playing Street fighter more or less non stop through every version since world warrior was in Dr Quirkey’s in O’Connell street. (LONG time ago ), and have played against a good few of you before. My standard ranges from pretty scary to utter shite depending on the game, but I mainly play SSF2T HDR these days, and am probably better at that than any other title at the moment, and i also play a bit of Hyper street fighter and Third strike on 360 with back compatibility for those of you who have the hard to get SF Anniversary Collection disc for the original Xbox. Would love to get some games going on either of those, as online competition doesn’t exist on them, full stop, and i haven’t been able to get very good, especially at 3S. Am happy to play SF2 Turbo: hyper fighting on XBL as well, although i havent touched it in the last few months.

I used to play a lot of Alpha 2 and 3 on kaillera as well, but since HDR came out i haven’t been there at all.I also have SFIV, but am more or less an intermediate level punchbag at it, and don’t like it nearly as much as 2D street fighter.

Anyone who wants to add me on XBL for some 2D scraps feel free, and message me to let me know you’re from ROI. I’ll take on all challengers . It would be good to play some non laggy matches with fighters from Eire for a change.

'Sup. I’m the guy from the last XGC tourney who played Sakura and used the PS2/360 HRAP. I’m a regular at the DS ranbats and if you’re interested in playing me at SF4, HD Remix, or even Battle Fantasia or Fatal Fury Special, you know what to do.

By the way, Q-Con is taking place next month (organised by Dragonslayers) and there’s sure to be plenty of fighting goodness to be had there. Not only that, last year they had a couple of arcade machines (Tekken 5 DR on one machine and GGXX #Reload, MvC2, DoA2, Project Justice and CvS2 on the other) that were brought over from a shop in Bangor called Replay Games, which is one of the sponsors of Q-Con. There’s no reason to suppose it’ll be any different this year.

Upcoming fighting game events in Ireland

Several computer gaming events are coming up and most of them are hosting Street Fighter 4 competitions. Some of these you may already of heard of, some of them you may not have.

I have talked with the SF IV tournament admin for Gamecon and the overall admin I think for A New Hope lan.

**1. Gamecon 15. **
Primarly a PC based gaming event run at the Lucan Spa Hotel Dublin, Starting on Friday 2009-06-19 at 21:00 running to Sunday 2009-06-21 09:00

Number of attendees is 70.

Price of admission is ?31.50 and its a pre-pay only event.

Internet provided.

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showt...p?t=2055571655

The SF IV compeition is being run on a single Xbox 360 on a regular TV (I was not told if it was an SD/HDTV or widescreen). Its unkown what prizes will be on offer but you can expect a few spot prizes.
Format of the compeition is a 1 game (5 rounds) single elimination.
No characters are banned.
I’m sure if there is interest seeding can be done.
Not sure on which day and at what time the compeition is hosted at.

Have put foward the idea of people going only for the SF IV event and not bringing a PC or console paying a lower entry fee. I’d don’t think its possible as space will probably be tight but will let you know.

2. A New Hope
A new 48 hours PC lan is being hosted at the Days Hotel, Park West, Dublin 12 starting at 17:00 3rd of July to 17:00 5th July.

Number of attendees is 60.

Admission price is ?30.00
People attending for SF IV only and not bringing a PC/Console will be charged the reduced rate of ?20.00. Each admission price allows the attendee to stay for the whole event.

Again admission is prepay only!

Internet is provided.

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showt...p?t=2055571577

The SF IV compeition format is as follows.
Will be hosted on 2xPC’s that will be using large projectors for screens.
Plenty of viewing space for spectators.
It will be a double elimination event.
No characters are banned.
Seeding can be peformed if preferred.
The prize for winning will be ?100, with smaller spot prizes for runners up. The top prize will be lowered if less than 10 players enter and be raised if more than 10 enter)
Time and day of comeptition to be clarified)

4 places can be reserved for consoles/pcs that have enough space for 2 people to play (i.e enough space for 2 players). Users bringing these machines will have to pay the full entry fee. (they could always charge a small fee to those other people playing on there machines to recoup the added expense)

3. Molotov Gaming
Hosting a 250+ attendee PC event in the Recreational Hall, Athy, Co. Kildare
Date provisionally set for July 24th-26th
Duration of event will be 48 hours - Friday 6pm until Sunday 6pm.

As for fighting game competitions I’m not sure yet, Street Fighter 4 is listed as a played game, as of this moment I have not yet been able to contact the admins yet so I have no details of any competitions yet.

4.Midlans
Expected to be on in August at its usual venue of the community hall in Street Co.Westmeath. I will be hosting an SF IV event on the PC at that.

**
5.Q-Con 16 **
A 3 day annual convention in Queens University in Belfast on the 26th to 28th June 2009, hosted by Dragonslayers (Northern Irelands established fighting game community, among other things ), the Queen?s University Belfast Gaming and Anime Society.

Attendance ranges into several hundreds.

Admission is 8 sterling per day or 15 for the whole event. Compeitions are either free of cost an additional 1.00.

Unlike the lans listed above this is not an overnight event so accomadation is required if you want to attend for more than one day.
You will find details on the site listed below. But accomadation can he had for as little as ?20.00

http://www.q-con.org.uk/index.php

The event covers a while spectrum of interests.

But of interest to the fighting game community are these 5 competitions.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core hosted on 2xPS2’s on Frieday evening.
Street Fighter III - 3rd Strike hosted on 2xPS2’s on Saturday morning.
Street Fighter IV (hosted on 2x TBA consoles) on Satuday afternoon.
Battle Fantasia hosted on 2xXbox 360’s on Sunday morning.
Super Smash Brothers. Brawl to be hosted on 2xWii’s on Sunday morning.
Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection to be host on 2xPS3’s on Sunday Afternoon.

You can expect these competitions to be well run as these guys have been running these for years and the know the figthing game scene well.
Prizes are TBA.

azza the beast thanks for the info man

Yo Azza.
Looks like theres a lot more Irish players than I thought, anyone know if there’s any other players from the Carlow/Wicklow/Wexford area? Me and my friend need more competition down here than just each other.

Yeah there is alot of players but like most game communities in Ireland they are fractured and all over the place with little communication between each other.

Do you and your friend play online. If so whats your online name and handles?
Failing that what names do you cgo by when playing your fighting game?

I think a GGPO Super Turbo player by the name of NEMISIS is from Carlow but after that I’m not sure. Most players I know are from the capital or from up north.

Best off posting on boards.ie fighting section looking for other players in your area.

Sorry for not replying earlier but my internet has been running slowly for the last week or so… I know of a few players in carlow town who were at the first tournament in the XGC but I haven’t seen them since then, I was wondering if there was anyone here who dosn’t post on boards.
I play online sometimes on PSN, my id is BalMachinShin, but my internet speed varies enormously so its rare that Ifind a playable match. I’ve heard that using a wired LAN can help quite a bit, is this true or is it just wishfull thinking?

Yes, you need to go wired as wireless is far too unstable.

kk, thanks… Time to go hunt down my old cable so…

Good afternoon all.
I’m pretty much flyin the flag for Waterford down here and the thought of some kind of street fighter 4 community interests me quite a lot.
I need improving all the time so anyone on xbox live, please add me. Gamertag = Araforn.
Let’s make this game popular in lil old Ireland!!

araforn - I’ve been to Waterford a few times, it’s a really nice city. Good to see the fighting love spreading beyond Belfast and Dublin. You up for a few games?

MackDaddi - Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you yet, it’s just that we’ve never been online at the same time since you added me. I’ll be online this evening, though.

No Worries man, a sub 50ms non laggy connection is worth waiting for, and i have been online at funny hours lately. Thanks for the add.

I won’t be on tonight, but you’ll probably catch me on tomorrow night for a few hours after 9 if you’re around. If not no worries tho, i’ll jump into your game and punch the head off you whenever i see you.

EDIT: Wait, i just checked and i see you’re online now. It’s ON!!

I am indeed bro.
I’ll add you on live.Really need to start using someone else. Its been Ken-Ryu and some guile but i want to have at least 3 solid characters.See you online!

Regarding Q-Con: I heard this afternoon that Blazblue and KOFXII (the arcade versions) are likely to be there. Replay in Bangor just got them in, apparently, and they’ll probably be taking them there.
