SF game with a good story

Lately, I’ve been wishing that Capcom would take a risk and make a Street Fighter game with some semblance of a story. I mean, SF is rich with character backgrounds and rivalries.

But then you have to consider the cost of a SF game with both a story AND online. It’d be hard to tackle, but possibly worth it in the end.

Hell, if Capcom was able to take a risk with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, then it’s only feasible that they take a gamble on this idea.

Just my thoughts. My bad if this is a worthless thread…

Capcom needs to CREATE a story in the first place.

Isn’t that what the multiple comics and anime are there for though? FGs are never about the story. The competition in then is what sells. Just like with Call of Duty, majority of people buy it for the online and never touch campaign.

There are lots of comics and anime of SF out there that doesnt follow the canon at all though.

Also, SF actually has a pretty big story. Here is a link to probably the best plot guide on the web.

Imo Capcom should make another Namco x Capcom type game, RPG or beat um up or something with street fighter characters and flesh out the story through this as well as a game that isn’t based on the fighting game community element. They put these games out to get the casuals money instead of dumbing down the core games.

The backstory for a lot of the characters in the game is pretty deep, although they never do delve into the characters much in the actual games which is a shame, but I’d be kidding myself if I said that the story didn’t have a lot of stupidity and sillyness in it either.
IMO depth wise the characters in the game can be listed like this.
Most character development: Sagat. Started off as a fairly amoral neutral character up to the events of the first Street Fighter, joined Bison wanting revenge on Ryu becoming a villain until the end of the Alpha games when he turns against M.Bison after realizing the wrongness of his actions and actually becomes an anti-hero and a mutual friendly-ish rival of Ryu by the time of Street Fighter 4.

Darkest Backstory: Vega. Holy crap, as a kid he watched his beautiful mother get killed by his ugly drunk father, enraged he killed his own father and traumatized comes up with the twisted idea that what is not physically beautiful must be evil and therefore be destroyed, turning him into everyone’s favourite narcissistic assassin.
Dhalsim. The dude wears freaking children’s skulls who had died by starving as a necklace to remind him of his goals.
Juri Watched her parents killed by Bison as a kid, the trauma of which makes her go crazy becoming a sadomachocist and swearing revenge on Bison.
Dan. When he was young he had to watch his Father get murdered by a young Sagat in cold blood in front of his own eyes, learning Ansatsuken form Gouken, when he was booted out by Gouken due to the impurity of his motives he formed his own fighting style with the single goal of revenge.
Chun-li. Father killed by Bison and seeks revenge on Bison for her Father’s unjust death. But for him, it was tuesday. (Yes, Yes I killed your father. What is it with you women anyway? I killed my father too and you don’t hear me whining about it! - M.Bison epicly burning Chun-li yet again).

Least deep characters:
Bison (OF COURSE!!!)
Ryu (after having his evil side sealed by Gouken in SF4).

story in a fighting game?

get that autistic bullshit out of here.

People don’t play fighting games for story. What does this have to do with SFxT?

Well, a story based fighting game would be sweet for a change. I wouldn’t really even care if it didn’t have online. Just a good story to compliment all the plot points and drama.

And I know there’s comics and anime out there, but they aren’t fleshed out enough (I’m not much of a comic guy btw, haven’t read any of em).

Ono has already said he was impressed by MK9’s story mode and was hoping to do something similar for an upcoming game. I’m guessing SF5 might have one of some sort.

I know I’m digging the rival cutscenes so I definitely wouldn’t mind a Street Fighter story mode.

Honestly, the only way you’re going to get a FG with a good story today is by taking a visual novel and making branching routes based on fight results (original Melty Blood springs to mind if you’re looking for one, but they had Nasu on board for that.) I guess BlazBlue and Guilty Gear kindasorta went this route but they are a lot shorter. If someone really breaks bank you might see a good story mode that relies heavily on cut scenes but I doubt anyone wants to take that sort of gamble any time soon.

Otherwise the genre isn’t really designed for it. Someone would probably have to make a few departures and make it into it’s own sub-genre for a good story to fit in.

Oh and Capcom would probably have to start from the ground up if they ever want to make an SF game with a good story. The established stuff is so bad, it might as well be a comedy.

Have you played Street Fighter The Movie? Graphics and story are both god-tier.

If they do a story they MUST do it MK style. The graphic novel thing is BORING.

But truthfully its not important. Say the story is finished in a few hours, even if it was really well done. Who’s playing that AGAIN? No one. The focus should be on the actual fighting. That’s where MK fell for me. The story was great but the gameplay made me wish I was playing a better game.

You forgot that the same incident resulted in the loss of her left eye. I wanna know HOW she lost it though. Some Psycho Power to the face or something?

street fighter rpg

Why not Street Fighter MMORPG?

This is one of the things I like about Ono; he clearly understands and follows other trends in the genre. He’s also paid attention to Skullgirls, and if the addition of a delayed pause is any indication, implemented a good idea he saw there.

There really should be at least some sort of story mode in this day and age. I mean, other fighting games like BlazBlue, Soul Calibur (with the exception of 4 and 5’s abomination of a story mode), MK, and I believe Tekken did. It’s just one of those features that make you go “hey, X company really went all out on this game!”

Don’t ask for a story in SFxT. It’s mega canon and made up!

The celestial being in SFxT that dropped pandora’s box is Ingrid dude… look at the game manual. lol

I wasn’t asking for a story per se that deals with SFxT. I couldn’t care less about the story behind this game.

I’m talking about a core Street Fighter entry that somehow made sense of all the convoluted events that occur without much explanation. A good example being how exactly Juri lost her left eye.

And yeah, I don’t remember how I came to know, but I do recall Ingrid being the one to send/hurl/whatever Pandora’s Box towards Earth.
