SF game with a good story

I’ve heard nothing about that. I also didn’t see it in the manual either :stuck_out_tongue: you’re not pulling one of those tricks that means you’re hella gullible are you?

If Blazblue can have a fantastic and entertaining story, why can’t Street Fighter? Only thing stopping Capcom is the lack of desire to do one.

…It wouldn’t hurt, but I don’t think without one should not break the quality of the game.

I really don’t see why that has anything to do with the game.

Story in fighting games nowadays is done so wrong that it infuriates rather than entertain.

Good example:
Street Fighter IV + all sequels (15-20 seconds of poorly done character endings and brief rivalry sucks)
Marvel vs Capcom 3 (Slideshows of characters are boring as hell.
Soul Calibur 5 (Only story mode for patroklos and pyrrha)
Street Fighter X Tekken (Tekken style ending style is awkward and is always is on the same place)

There is some that is okay like:
Mortal Kombat
Blazblue
King of fighters 13 (seems more fleshed out than KOF12)

Mortal Kombat 9 has the best story mode i’ve seen in a fighting game. Capcom should do the same with Street Fighter V because SF deserves it. I dunno know about u all, but i seriously want to know who Q is. I want to how/if Abel becomes Gill. I wanna know if Charlie will ever comeback and how. I want to know in detail what happened to M.Bison & Shadowloo before SF3. I would like to see Mel Masters in a SF game one day.

I like predetermined rivalries & knowing each characters motives. Its like playing make-believe as a kid in a way. Killer Instinct 2 had multiple endings depending on who you kill, which was a great touch. Eternal Champions would look pointless if the storyline wasn’t established. A storyline can only make a great fighting game greater.

Most of the people on this forum are like “who gives a fuck about the story.” Well most “casual” consumers love that shit. I have a friend who all he does is mash on a pad and plays arcade mode on very easy just to see everyone’s rival cut scene/ending.Try to get him to play 1v1 and he flat out refuses because he knows he will lose. Outside of the FGC there are a ton of people who just want to play the story like it was some RPG. A lot of casual gamers say that MK9 is the best fighting game ever because of the story mode. The mainstream perception of fighting games is that we play these things for the story alone.

I wont lie, I was excited to see Balrog meet Dudley for the first time in SSF4, I wanted to see what happens. I want to know what happens to Bison between SFIV and SFIII. If it means that some random casual fan will buy the game to support Capcom/Netherrealm/Namco because of the story,good. But did I buy SFxT for the story?HELL NO. Fuck Pandora. I bought it because I love fighting games. Fighting games do need story lines though because it sells to the random gamer.

I want to know who Q is too damnit.

The problem with sf stories it that there is no progress. Ryu will forever wander the world for what the fuck ever it is while battling the satsui no hadou. Ken will continue being a successful family man longing to be reunited with his best friend/rival.

Actually you all do care about the characters stories, despite the brain dead fucks saying otherwise.

Story is what crafts characters into who they are, and what drives them. Yes the meat of the game is the gameplay, but the story and characterization is the spice and flavor of the game. It gives the characters their personalities, their voice, swag, and what they look like.

Without any story characters aren’t from anywhere, don’t look like anything, have no reasoning behind their fighting style, moves, the way they talk, their taunts, nothing.

-Ryu wouldn’t have a hadoken or shoryuken they also wouldn’t have those names.
-Ryu and Ken have no relationship they are just dudes in a game.
-Dan wouldn’t be goofy
-Sagat wouldn’t have a scar.
-Cody would be a blond guy in tshirt and jeans who came from no where and never did anything.
-Akuma really wouldn’t exist. Period.
-Blanka wouldn’t be a mutant man.
-Bison would be a pleasant chap
-Sakura wouldn’t have any of her moves like ryu.
-Vega wouldn’t laugh or taunt or cut people up. Forget him using a claw.
-Balrog instead of saying “MY FIGHT MONEY!!” would just go “argh!”
-Chun Li is not Chinese says nothing in chinese, and is fighting for no reason just like very other character.
-Guile wouldn’t have his camo pants, say sonic boom, or care about you being a family man.
-Zangief never does a russian dance or talk all cool and Russian, imagine him with the flattest english accent ever.
-Hugo has no wrestling themed anything, he’s not german, doesn’t hang out with Poison, and certainly doesn’t say MACH SNELL! EIN SWEI DREI END!
-E. Honda is now just some dude off the street and he fights by punching you
-Sim cant stretch breath fire or teleport but he yells everything and now he plays like a rush down character.

Story is bonded to building characters, and anyone who doesn’t get that should play super math hitbox grey square fighter.

The problem with the stories in current games, is they are doing whatever they can to NOT change the story. If characters don’t have motivation, or aren’t challenged in their resolve, have to make tough decisions to get what they want or avoid doom, or grow, learn or change. Then the story is stagnant and not moving anywhere, it’s just the same thing.

if capcom wants to make the story interesting, characters are going to have to actually interact more than “yo dude lets fight.” Maybe Ken and Ryu break off their friendship until the next game, or Bison actually succeeds at dominating a country but must choose between keeping his country or becomming immortal, Balrog finds something to care about more than fight money, Chun Li loses an eyeball to Juri, Sagat has a kid and trains him, Dan loses his saikyo dojo to Makoto, E. Honda falls in love with Cammy and tries to court her. Cody starts training Karin to beat Sakura for the fun of it, Guile becomes a democrat. Whatever it’s not really that hard if you’re willing to ADD something to the characters. But that’s scary to a company that survives on keeping the characters the same for decades.

Also if it were up to me, they’d stop making stupid final bosses, the final bosses should just be the characters rival with x2 health and a badass version of their themesong. And you’d have to play ALL the characters to get the full story, and if you did certian things during a fight like an option select, tick throw, or a certain combo you’d unlock stuff.

Currently Brawl has the best story of any fighting game i’ve played, it also has ZERO dialogue.

The best characters/movies are those with the most progression and video games are no different. I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all to ask for “more” and I think it is a disgrace that we are still getting half-assed, 1 paragraph generic voice over endings in 2012. Christ, even in the 90’s they tried with the same repetitive flash art behind the text…

read a book or watch a movie. those are good media for story telling. even for video game standards, fighting games are a poor vehicle for story telling. there’s only so much depth you can fit in to character win quotes and the 2 minute ending movies when you beat arcade mode. they would have to invent completely new RPG like game modes, and at that point, why not just play an RPG?

I hope they never reveal Q’s backstory. The mystery around him is what makes him Q.

I think fighting games can afford not to really have a big story/main story focus for it. If they want to shoot for it (MK) that’s fine.

However, due to fighting games being very-character centric, I feel there must be a lot of character to the roster. I can’t just play HairbandMartialArtist/BlondeMartialArtist, I would prefer to play Ryu/Ken. The backgrounds or story to the characters don’t necessarily have to be deep, just very well defined, and I think there will be a lot of characters to root for them. This plays to the genre’s strengths…and can also be its bane (SF3 series’ popularity in the mainstream).

Personally speaking, I think identifying with characters in fighting games is awesome. It’s why I tend to like Capcom’s games including their most recent offerings even though I have problems with them. I feel gratified to pick out and play as characters that I like, and that is solidified but how distinct they are not just from each other within a game, but from other games overall too. Ultimate Marvel somehow made a whole cast filled with the magic series feel distinct from each other, including the common “shoto-clones” having not just a different flow to their combos, but even their basic combos have slightly different timing (magic series timing is not the same for every character). This adds to the perceived character that we see, normally in the intro and victory, and adds to it.

Being attached to a character is also why I hated the reveal on Ash Crimson’s motives in the latest KoF. I found in him a fun, flamboyant and effeminate villain (who was at the same time the protagonist) to root against and the latest KoF undoes the whole thing and now I feel like I can’t really get behind Ash anymore. Similarly, by this departure in character, I’ve lost all interest in KoF’s plot for the time being, even though I followed it during 2003-XI.

Not to say that portraying a story is wrong/unneeded, just saying that however a fighting game is made, the players need to be able to identify with the characters. That’s probably a big reason why the SF2 cast is really iconic; the characters are, while simple, extremely distinct, and even their gameplay tends to reflect this, especially nowadays where even the clones are vastly different from each other.

On the flipside, Mortal Kombat was at a time oversaturated with male ninjas/female ninjas/robot ninjas. Some did gain popularity but as far as I know, not all made it. And some characters just felt downright plain (I’m thinking of Stryker, but honestly, for all I know, he might be popular?).

Stryker was lame. Who wants to play as a mall cop? What’s next? A golf caddy character? A shoeshine? Maybe an accountant?

Yeah the original Stryker design was pretty lame, MK9 Stryker is pretty damn boss though.

I’ve always felt that KOF did a good job incorporating story into its games. 13 in particular had unique conversations between characters in arcade/story mode. Little things like that go a long way in fleshing out the personalities of characters. That was one of the few things I liked about SvC as well.

on topic … i think SFA3 stories were ok. although there is some level or repetition in the endings . its the rivalries (sub-boss) that are actually interesting.

anyway i dont need stories on FGs…i played VF in the arcade and you wouldnt have any idea what the real story is but i still loved the game (i learned the story later in the manuals and internet). SNK games (especially SS and LB) on the other hand would present you with a story but its so lame you’d scream WHO CARES?? and just skip straight to the next battle anyway.

The presentation of the story is pretty good in this trailer, which is ironic considering it’s not going to actually be viewable in the game, and it’s not canon for either series.

But it’s a step in the right direction.

Off course, the best loved KoF games were always the ones without story (98, 2k2, with XIII being the lone exception).

The problem is that fighting games can not tell a story as well as a RPG. I’m sure people think the cutscenes/stories in MK vs DC, and MK9 are solid but the story mode gameplay is not. The fighting is mostly recycle, and it does not change throughout the game. The best bits are fighting Shao Kahn, Goro, and Kintaro in story mode, but they got recycled a bit too much. To me the challenge tower gameplay was superior to story mode because they alter the gameplay in the challenge tower.

Let us compare that to say Mortal Kombat:Shaolin Monks. Easily Shaolin Monk has a better designed story because the gameplay reflects how well the story told. The gameplay is not recycyled at all, the game has a lot of task for you to adventure in the game. You get need new moves to change the gameplay, completely different bosses from the story,platforming, big maps, and there is a lot of variety to the story mode. The reason why Shaolin Monk tells a better story than most fighting games is because it’s not a fighting game. You don’t just get a cutscene, and fight a cpu in repeative fashion like it’s a old school acrade fighter.

Yes Casual gamers like story, but not all games have stories that define the title. Call of Duty, Starcraft2,etc aren’t exactly know for their stories over their gameplay. I’m sure Brawl can tell a good story+has good gameplay, but the game also suffer from the fact that game is not as good as a competitive game vs melee. It doesn’t hurt the game at all, but it won’t be all that game.
