you play games solely based on what they look like ?
I hope Capcomâs FG division burns down and never re-opens.
To say that this is a site dedicated to fighting games, some of you people sure have poisonous attitudes about them.
Itâs not like judging a book by its cover. If a gameâs art style is unappealing and, by its very nature, you have to look at it to play, then itâs enough to make someone pick from all of the alternatives out there.
I donât think this is something that should simply be looked over. I like how Capcom and SNK went on totally opposite paths for gfx in '94. In fact, one of the standout appeals of KoF was always its contemporary, almost Hollywood character designs and realistic proportions. Now I feel like Kingâs arms are ready to break and that her gigantic eyes will explode when she takes a punch to the grape.
I can look past animufag shit if the game is stylish enough. Guilty Gear is hilarious and cool. Blazblue looks a lot less appealing - more like a JRPG than a zany, metal themed insanity-fest.
Whatâs this talk about SFxT costing people their jobs? Did the game not sell so well or what?
You seem to have mistakenly added an âonlyâ in there.
Everyone cares about how a game looks, its just not cool for people to admit it for some reason.
No, it did not:
I think seth just got tired of working there, now I believe seth tries to tell capcom about what works and what doesnt, and MAYBE ono or niitsuma listened or wanted to change it for fans BUT they are not in full control over the game,I also feel capcom should listen less to the fgc because all this bitching will get us another sfxt, vanilla sf4 they mainly just listen to character picks gameplay they didnt give a shit about the balance same with vanilla mvc3 but sfxt didnt seem like it was tested enough I mean jab>alpha counter, hopefully capcom fixes sfxt hire Keth Sillian and stop charging us for dlc charactersâŚdlc songs, stages is ok
it kind of is judging a book by its cover because the visual aesthetics of a game are one of the least important parts of playing the game competitively.
i generally donât like games like arcana heart or other anime games, not because of their art style, but because of how they play just doesnât really appeal to me. this is important because i am basing the decision around how the game plays, and I actually took the time to try it.
fast forward to skull girls. also an anime style game (although pretty different style of anime) and from trying that its become one of my favorite games to play.
when you are playing fighting games, and you are super concentrated on whats going on, chances are you are not paying attention the art direction, but the gameplay. thatâs the meat of the game and whatâs so enjoyable. if you are basing your decision to the visual aesthetic, and thatâs what keeps you from trying a large amount of good diverse games out there, then your loss, I guess.
there is nothing bad about not liking the aesthetics, but at the same time, i have noticed that the amount of hate against the âanimeâ designs is just hillarious to the point that many times it seems that many hate on it just because, like when they make over generalizations like the one that smash whatever said in his post or you with how you label it as âanimefagâ.
its even more hillarious because as how you said it, it seem that you are willing to give up on fighters because you cant pass the looks of the games because they are animu or shit like that more hillarious because sf and mvc3 are very fucking anime, denying that is just idiotic to be honest.
so because you cant pass over what it seems sometimes more of a hate based only because its something different, you are willing to pass on games than could probably be a experience that you would enjoy, who knows how many games out there could have been what you wanted on a fg, but you decided to past on them, because lol animu.
for example i enjoy playing sf4 despite that i truly hate the horrid character desing and 3d models, compared to what capcom can do, sf4 is just hideous
or fallout 3 & nv for a non fighting game example, i found the graphics and presentation in general on the games as very ugly, but the games are awesome to play, so if i brushed them off because i didnt like the presentation, i would have missed about something that i truly enjoyed and spent over 100 hour in gamepla in each of one
i guess that not everyone is not shallow enough for not judge or dismiss something because the first looks, not to mention that aparently what the pic i posted seem to be true
i also find interesting by the way, that there are many who hate the anime aesthetics, considering that the principal developers are on japan and always use thi kind of character designs on artwork, presentation, etc, etc
if the game looks nice, sweet.
if it doesnât and still plays really well, then for fighting games thatâs fine for me and a lot of other people, because as I mentioned, when you are playing there is a large amount of time you are not paying attention to aesthetics whatsoever.
lots of people share this sentiment, and its not just some vain attempt to look âcoolâ.
it sucks to watch a lot of people miss out on sweet games when they are simply paying attention and judging it by one of its least important elements.
More realistically itâs a very subtle effect, like how a noise in the background or a faint scent can effect your mood. Humans as a race arenât very good at judging what effects their emotions, or why they like something for that matter ><
The important thing though is that it has a huge effect on what games people chose to buy and play, taking Arcana as the noncontroversial example, the community was stillborn because of the way it looks (even most of Japan is embarrassed by it), and it never came to being a case of how good or bad the game was.
One of the big things Capcom added was a really striking, strong aesthetic to go along with the good brand recognition. People tend to forget how impressive and how big an impact those SF4 promo videos had, or how impressive the game looked to people before we were all used to it.
I have to agree with Alex though, it feels like if Capcom backs off (and it seems VERY VERY LIKELY THEY WILL) the Anime faction will take over the games again, and thatâs too bad⌠Well, not counting 3D, and not counting if Injustice does really well.
Yeah, America was pretty fucking great.
ON topic,
Itâs a shame that the industry is so dependent on SF, I do hope that if it goes, there can be a company that can fill its shoes, preferably SNK. Because as sound Arcana, Melty, Guilty may be (as fighters), anime fighters do not appeal to me what so ever. No matter how good they are.
Thatâs a shame. Anyways, does anyone know if there is any relation between Seth Killian and Seth(The Street Fighter character)? Or is the same the same on pure coincidence?
and why its bad? oh almighty xes that knows everything and what everyone thinks despite their tries to hide it?
as how i see it, it can be the opportunity for many to start broaden their scope, though who im kidding, the average person is shallow and hates everything that its remotely outside of their comfort zone
fortunately its 2012 baby, the world would be finished by the end of the year and if all of us arent dead, at least a good amount of the population would be wiped off
âŚ3D fighters? Like VF?
Tekken says hi as well.
âŚI mean do you forget that a fraction of hardcore Capcom fans are pissed that SF4/SFXT/MVC3 doesnât play like their old games.
i can agree with bolded statement to a degree. for fighting games, that sensation and effect defintely comes through, but more so by the animation/movement and sound, and less by the actual drawing. if you let how a character is drawn effect how you play, then thatâs a habit a player would quickly need to kick as it would certainly make them not very good at fighting games.
i have heard pretty different reasons of why the arcana heart community did not do well, mostly due to super poor marketing and localization efforst, but i wouldnât be surprised if that and what you said went hand in hand
people need to try games before they can say anything about them and then expect their opinions to matter.
if someone comes up and tell me skull girls or arcana heart is a bad based on how it looks, and they are going to completely dismiss a game on how it looks, its safe to assume they are not very smart.
i like some elements of the sf4 art design, particularly the character models and animations, but i gotta say, I really hated the promo stuff. could have just been the choice of music though.
for the second bolded part, just out of curiosity, why is that too bad?
Lots of those games are extremely diverse and play very differently from one another (i.e. guilty gear, skull girls, and arcana heart play very differently from another).
Once again, is this based on how they look?
I really only play ST and Skullgirls super competitively, so this is coming from someone who is some hardcore anime fangasm guy.
The character is named after the man.
its worse actually, that 1.4 million are sells to retailers
from what i know the game sold to to the public even less than that, apparently is not even around the half of the sells to the retailers
Was not thinking 3D but good point.
