Fighting games DIDN’T end when Street Fighter went into hibernation after SF3’s general critical AND financial failure in the late 1990s…
There’s no question, though, that they went into a long hibernation period with only SNK (during several periods of reorganization) releasing an occasional KOF or Samurai Shodown game and a number of smaller companies like Arc Systems during their own thing — of course, all in Asia.
Now that Capcom is in creative malaise (company won’t die any time soon – do us all a favor and hold your breath if you hate them that much!) I do suspect that the fighting game scene in the US will start to quiet down a bit unless one of the other videogame companies can reinvigorate the fight scene.
I don’t see that happening with the likes of Midway, SNK, or Arc Systems. Not even Namco. Their games just don’t inspire the mass interest and fanaticism that Capcom’s Street Fighter and Marvel games did. Unless they find their own formulas, charisma, and general ease of gameplay, not gonna happen.
I’m not surprised Capcom is having a backlash… They repeated a lot of the same mistakes and operated under the same general B.S. they did during the mid-1990s. The difference is that the backlash is happening quicker now and the players and collectors today are generally less patient than the generation back then was.
As much as we’re resisting to agreement. This guys makes a point. There are not much games like SF around right now. Mostly doujin/animu games.
Tbh I can find more similarities in a 3d fighter with SF than I can alot of the games that are out now. So this statement has merit.
All I would say tho is that your tastes are too exclusive. Its good let yourself experience a various amount of fighters and concept designs so it’ll be easier for you to enjoy newer and fresher things in fighters. It’ll also make innovation in fighters less overwhelming to you.
i wish i could find people online to play garou mark of wolves on xbox live …i always tinker with the homie kokomorou or what ever with the stick and throwing stars once every year
Maybe you guys who are looking for a new SF-style game should take a look at Battle Fantasia. It’s fujoshi art style (the creator now does doujinshi) but mechanics are mostly SF, though Arc did force some GG down the developer’s throat.
Also, I think you guys are sleeping on Persona’s sales potential. It will outsell KOF easily.
@8:43 Wait a minute, Seth thinks resets are cheap? Or was he just hodgepodging that with the Alpha stuff as an example of something that was unintentional?
i played the shit out of Persona 3 on ps2…fucking game stole my life for a while , i think it will sell well and all the poor rpg girls and gals that have been playing Shin Megami Tensei games on there Ds and psp are gonna cry when they find the fgc is in there and there not having fun as a basment dweller juggles them to death…poor .Shin Megami Tensei crowd dont know what they buying into
I agree. SF X TK was suppose to be a multi-million dollar sale, and completely flopped, alot went wrong with that game, but I think there is a bigger issue a hand. But Seth did say that there will be more “firewworks” going on with SF X TK. I wanna know Namco reaction to all this.
battle fantasia, aquapazza, the rumble fish (this one is very old though 2005 or something) koihime muso to name some, im pretty sure that there are some more
the problem here is that people dont give them the benefit of trying them, because lol animu (no shit sherlock, its made in japan), mostly because the character dont look like
Im curious…is this battle fantasia really that good? I mean I remember seeing it on the back of my blazblue manual but paid it no mind.
How is it? And what kind of game is it like?
S-Kill parting ways from Capcom… I guess I should have seen this coming. First Kamiya, then Inafune, and now this. I’m gonna miss S-Kill. I hope he intends on competing in FGC tourney’s later on…
I really do worry about what will happen if Capcom stops doing fighters, they’re the only company (besides MK) to make games that AREN’T “desu” or whatever.
The closest thing we’ll have is KOF but their style went all anime on us somewhere in the 00’s.
