If Seth’s SPD is like Hawk/Gief’s, then no it isn’t a free lp SPD on block. With Hawk I can only punish Fei’s overhead with super/ultra.
feis overhead is -4 on block therefore can be punished by spd
SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV FRAME DATA - PRIMA Official Game Strategy
I was messin around with seths splash and found it to be pretty useful in subtly putting yourself into lp spd range. Interesting tool when you find yourself just outside of sweep range against a solid footsie character.
Lets hope capcom releases arcade mode seth as next new playable A.E. Character. XD
Rofl. Hell yeah!
I know Warlike can help on this but what Ultra does everyone use for the Gen matchup?
U2 for chip, combos, and anti-airs.
I tried many times to AA wall dive and I fail all the time because they go up
u1 for me. do it really late vs his walldive shenanigans and it will beat from what I’ve seen all of them w/ or w/o autocorrect. plus he can get out of u2 chip.
Not sure how Gen can get out, no doubting this either, but anyway, I’m willing to bet that Gen can bait out U2 the same as U1, and even if you hit the U2 dead on to his DF (down/forward) oga, he’d probably fall out the same as Adon does. Gen lacks wake-up options though, and if/when you have him cornered, you can definitely get combos into U2.
Edit: Since upkicks are so unsafe on block, Gen shouldn’t be using these much, if at all, as both of Seth’s ultras can punish it.
^ He can probably ex oga through it/away from it.
Gen can use his Crane Super to get out from point blank.
List of things that beat U2 chip.
Ex Oga no longer has invincibility in SSF4, BlueBlazer.
Gen is no where near as free on wake up as people make him out to be. I’m sure Warlike agrees. Yes he doesn’t have the ex wall dive escape anymore but he does have a great backdash and some really good anti airs.
Oga (walldive) is so free on block, just block it which honestly isn’t hard unless it’s a pure 50/50 setup (I got some sick ones you’ll never block muahaha) for a free throw/combo, you have to combo really fast though as some Gens like to mash gekiro after blocked oga…
Regarding ultras I would go with U1 simply because it limits Gens walldive game and he can’t jump as freely around once you get it. Also Gen cannot get out of U2 (unless he uses super…) with EX Oga as it no longer has full invincibility, it only has projectile invincibility useful for escaping chipdamage from projectile ultras (and rose U2). It’s interesting though, I tested this vs Seths U2 awhile back and while it never worked this one time I did EX Oga and Gen got out but got reeled in the animation behind Seth, really weird and I tried to duplicate this so many times but it never worked again. 99/100 times.
I agree with Moose Deuce, Gen does have a bunch of solid anti-air normals such as mantis c.hp, crane c.hk mantis s.hp. Ofcourse if you corner him he has EX gekiro that will pretty much hit anything you stick out, so make sure your blockstrings are tight. Also, if you block gekiro most gen players like this shenanigan of waiting half a second and do a 2nd kick hoping you didn’t block anymore, gotta watch out. His backdash is indeed really good (I use it too much sometimes lol). He doesn’t have the best wake-up options but it sure as hell is better than some other characters.
Besides the hard part is getting Gen in the corner as Seth, because Gen can play great footsies and Seth can’t compete with those. Also his multiple cross-up jump normals make him a slippery foe to corner.
Also ‘gen shouldn’t be using upkicks much’? Uh since super his gekiro combos have become a lot more important, especially s.mp s.hp lk gekiro (which can be done after mk s.mp hands fadc for about 369 damage, sometimes worth it. Obviously Gen shouldn’t throw them around random, hell I almost never anti-air with gekiro, as his normals do the job just aswell. Like everything with Gen it all comes down to the players execution, gekiro combos are more risky in that regard, but more damaging also.
It’s a hard match-up for Seth in my personal opinion simply because Gens footsies and pokes are very solid (although the Gen section has a inferiority complex against chun-li’s normals lol). Lets not forget his air normals which make it almost impossible to j.hp or walldive towards him unless on knockdown. crane j.hp is godlike (hell it beats out guile airthrow at times!) and crane j.hk which if it hits even once can get a free Ultra or super crane combo. Once Gen gets super then the match is heavily in his favor. I mean you can’t jump at all unless it’s a neutral jump from fullscreen away because his crane super (hk version) can travel almost 3/4 of the screen and has a start-up of 1 frame so it catches pretty much any jump on reaction (BOOM 350-400 damage) and his mantis super can be comboed in so many ways with the possibility of reset shenanigans afterwards (I like doing crane roundhouse x2 and as you land I do the overhead, works so much and after the super it accounts for 500+ damage lol).
It amazes me how little people know about Gen, which is also kind of a factor working in Gens favor. If you guys want to I could make a more indepth write up for the specific match-up sometime.
Hey guys this might be alil late but i had a good set with a friend of mine who plays vega.
Took me awhile to upload cuz i been busy at work but i wanted to post these up for the guys that had trouble with vega matchup.
enjoy…!
also dont know but the sound might be off in the first part lol i aint botherin with it cuz it takes forever to upload to youtube.

Spd more imo, and os tanden.
Ah, didn’t know that.
Yeah believe it or not im barely learning how to do certain OS’s lol and i dont spd much against this guy cuz in other matches he usually jumps out. I usually start my mixups in the corner against vega where he cant run away.
My game plan is to pressure him with dk and once i see him backflip i just aim my reg jump farther to catch him. And i aim to corner him asap.
Ima keep practicing my tandem os tho cuz im scared to f it up mid match and get wrecked.
I don’t think OS tandem is that critical vs Vega, and a few other match-ups. if his best escape/counter is backflip, you have enough time to catch the single flip with sweep, and more than enough time to catch the double flip with HK legs, or possibly even a jump in.
It makes sense though. How many top Gen players were there in SFIV? How many are there now? Also how many Gen players actually play the character solid outside of random gimmicks?
That was a great write-up btw. One of my friends (who tied for 9th at NCR 2010) used to main Gen in Vanilla, but has since moved on to Cody. That was the only Gen match-up experience I’ve had since SFIV. There is another great Gen player from the Bay Area, but I’ve yet to play him.
Even not knowing much about the matchup, it does feel extremely awkward and tough for Seth.
Many Gen players rely too much on gimmicks, which is quite dumb because imo he is at heart still a footsie/poke based character. I feel like he is a little bit underrated because he is/was underexplored in the sense that no one looked at him beyond the hand loop combos.
During SSFIV there were no top Gen players really, Yeb stopped playing SSFIV and besides some Japanese players (onlinewarriors though) he had zero exposure. That’s why it’s interesting to see amiyu being in the top 10 of AE in japanese arcades with Gen. He’s really solid in his footsies. Yeb has also made return last week at winterfest tournament, making it to top 8 after barely playing a week. I think most people dropped super Gen because they didn’t know what to do with him after his hand loops were taken out, luckily me and some others found some intetresting stuff after hitting the lab extensively during super. Hopefully we’ll see more Gens once AE drops.
Anyway this is way too off-topic, sorry.
