Nothing about the SPD itself changed (apart from stun), but the setup did get weaker as a result of everything else. When doing the regular crossup, you have to compensate for delay wakeup by reacting to whether you see the techinical before you start the jump. If so, you can’t OS anything and have to get ready to tech on their wakeup. You can also delay your jump to match the delay wakeup timing, but this is much harder as you need to react precisely on point everytime or else if you delay your jump when they don’t delay wakeup, you’ll only be halfway through your jump when they’ve already woke up and standing.
The j.mk/j.hk also hurts a bit. Apart from the hit/hurtbox changing for mostly the worse, j.mk obviously gives much less hit/blockstun. On hit, this means less time to confirm, which isn’t so much a problem since you still have ample time to confirm the hit, cr.lp cl.hp still easy IMO. Can’t really use the jumpin itself to confirm anymore since impact freeze is lower too, so you kinda have to guess going directly into cl.hp, and being forced to xx boom a blocking opponent isn’t great news. On block is where the j.mk transition really hurts, with the biggest problem being that you can’t true blockstring the cr.lk low anymore. Before, after having the opponent block the j.hk crossup, Seth put the opponent into a position where them doing anything but low block could potentially result in free combo, thus giving Seth pretty much free reign to force a guess on the command grab. Now, Seth is roughly neutral to slightly positive on block, meaning you have to guess their reversal upon landing, and once again you don’t have as much time to confirm hit or block, forcing you to either tick a light before going into SPD, or go straight into it, hoping they actually blocked the hit. Also, as a result of DP nerf all around, you now need 3 bars to bully them with DP FADC, which also sucks but that was never the most important component of the mixup regardless.
Boom FADC jumpin shenanigans vs corner opponents are risky now, since you have to do the boom FADC before the technical ever appears, and if they do choose to delay wakeup, your regular timing on boom can miss. The stomp, j.lk/j.mk followup is also much weaker for reasons stated earlier, except a bit worse because you bounce up after the stomp, so the j.mk combo timing is extremely tight, and goes into negative territory on block.
As a side note, unblockable on Blanka is gone as a result of walljump nerf.
Really been still loving seth just have some questions about red focus. Is there any highly used red focus combos for him? I find myself not even touching red focus ever. is cst.hk into cr.mpx2 possible with plinking? and if so id assume only in the corner.
Corner doesn’t matter for grounded link combos. That combo shouldn’t work, but I haven’t tried it. It would only work off a Tanden Engine if it did. cl.mp cl.hp is probably better damage anyway.
Red Focus is an easy way to convert off Sonic Boom into a cr.hp xx lp SRK -> stomps midscreen, which gives you a reset. Also, giving Seth infinite armor on his focus attack is never bad.
I have had trouble with that exact reset midscreen. Only cuz I REALLY need to grease that white round thing in my fightstick. cuz I can’t even feel the motion of an uppercut its rough but I can usually get it out when I want just specifying it in that combo is difficult. cl.mp cl.hp opposed to cls.hk and cr.mp you get more damage gain more meter get a lengthier combo and more opportunities to confirm if you got the reflex but I find cl.mp cl.hp easier obviously but is cls.hk cls.mp possible? thats good damage. cls.hk x2 cr.mp does not work its to much pushback.
@AlextheKing If s.HK, c.MP xx MK legs does more damage than Seth’s new combo, then people probably don’t do it mostly because it’s impractical, and much harder/impossible if the other character is crouching or too far. I like his close HK because it’s a great combo confirm and frame trap, and you can LP SPD right after on hit or block.
@Rhythmic_combos close HK to close MP has always been impossible.
I tend not to use EX Red Focus at all with Seth, though I will throw out regular Red Focus from time to time. Feels good when you catch stuff like Bison’s scissor kick or Chun’s EX Lightning Kick. EX DP into EX Tanden is my EX Red Focus.
I expect the combo below to be common knowledge, since I’ve known about it since AE2011. It works in Vanilla and Super too, but it’s much more strict there. Credit to Bafael for making the video.
I thought Super connecting after Hyakuretsu was an AE buff.
Kinda weird how it won’t connect without the kara; I didn’t know about it. Could be good for closing rounds against characters that cst.MP, cst.HP works.
Correct, it’s an AE2011 buff; that’s when I discovered this for myself. If you screw up the kara in AE2011-USF4, the final hit doesn’t come out but the rest of the super connects. In Vanilla and Super, the super will completely whiff unless you walk up as far as possible and karacancel.
It’s kind of like discovering charge partitioning in 3S, then going back to the older games and finding out it works there too.
I don’t think this has been done yet, so I went and did it. Here are the optimal/possible links to use on each character after landing a Tanden.
Against this character, use cl.HK, cl.HP:
Seth
Against these characters, use cl.MP, cl.HP:
Adon*, Sakura*, Ryu, E.Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Oni, Dan, Balrog, Vega, Bison, Fei Long, Dee Jay, Ibuki, Dudley, Viper, Rolento, Poison
Against these characters, just use cl.HP (or use cl.HK, d.MP):
Hakan, Zangief, T.Hawk
Against these characters, use d.MP, cl.HP:
Everyone else
cl.MP, cl.HP is a one-frame link against Adon and Sakura. On the first frame after recovery, cl.HP will connect on Adon and whiff on Sakura. On the second frame after recovery, cl.HP will connect on Sakura but far HP will come out against Adon. Long story short, it’s unplinkable against Sakura but plinkable against Adon. It doesn’t work at all against Decapre; I was being stupid. *
EDIT: Another way to help you remember: all male members of the “shoto family” except Gouken, the 3 Shadaloo bosses (Sagat quit in Alpha), Fei/DJ from SSF2, Ibuki/Dudley from SF3, Viper, Rolento, Poison.
EDIT2: Don’t do any links against grapplers, minus Hugo.
Wanna do up to 445 damage off a Tanden midscreen with only one EX bar and U1? Now you can!
The following setups are optimized for damage as far as I tested. Anyone not listed is either immune to this link or the setup is less damage than crouch HP into U1, which is 374. Tanden Engine is not mandatory except for the close MP x2 and close MP to close HP links.
Crouch MP, close HP xx EX Boom, U1 (420): Rose, El Fuerte, Guile, C. Viper, Cammy, Elena, Sakura, Gen.
Crouch MP, close MP xx EX Boom, U1 (405): Decapre, Poison, Hugo.
Close MP, Close MP xx EX Boom, U1 (430): Rolento.
Close MP, Close HP xx EX Boom, U1 (445): Ibuki, Dan.
Poison’s hurtbox opens up new and interesting combo possibilities for Seth.
Haven’t seen these around before, so I thought I’d post it here since all of the combos are quite practical.
There’s also something else I’ve been trying to work on that combos 10 sonic booms and ends into lightning legs/ultra against a crouching Poison.
It could theoretically work, but it looks like you need to maintain somewhat of a pixel perfect position for the entirety of the combo.
lp sonic boom(fullscreen), teleport, close mp xx ex sonic boom, low mk xx ex sonic boom, low mk xx ex sonic boom, low mk xx ex sonic boom, close hp xx lp sonic boom, far lp, low mk xx mk lightning legs, ultra 2
So I am trying to pick up Seth, what combos should i know?
So far I can do:
c.lk c.lp c.mp mk kicks
c.lp cl.hp hk kicks
cl.hp sonic boom fadc cl.hp hk kicks
cr.hp lp dp (1) stomps divekick
cr.mp cl.hp hk kicks
Close Strong combos into close fierce on some characters, so you can get a little more damage than the crouch strong version.
You can combo close roundhouse into close fierce on Seth after Tanden and Sonic Boom FADC.
So this might be old news but you can connect ultra 1 with seth on cammy after cl hp ex booms. Tried it against Decapre and Honda but it doesn’t connect, anyone know who else it works on or just cammy
