Sentinel Kneejerk Patch for Skullgirls?

Mike Z,

I was at a bit of a loss for words today when I read the patch notes that you discussed. This was clearly a 100% Kneejerk reaction patch to the Peacock/Double team which has been dominating. The changes that were made were intentionally designed to kill that team off because people are just too lazy to learn how to play against it.

All you have to do is duck!!! Everybody is just used to hitting A,B,C… doing their thing… and then they win. You can’t do that against Peacock / Double… you have to adjust… just like you have to adjust while playing against Sentinel in Vanilla MvC3.

Peacock / Double is a strong team no doubt but it is far from invincible. Here is a great first to ten with me playing Peacock / Double and my friend using Parasoul / Cerebella. You will see that when somebody actually knows how to deal with her it’s not the invincible powerhouse that you think it is. I still end up winning but the score was 10-9.

With regards to her teleport… 3 extra frames is a lot! It can already be punished incredibly easily and you will see my friend punish me for using it many many times. When you teleport you come up right next to the opponent - how much time do you need to punish?! The idea though is that if the opponent jumps - he can’t punish… so he just walks forward, ducks my assist, and I’m left with no options at all. 3 frames is a jab… I guess I’ll find out but if it means I can’t even teleport when the other player is jumping anymore then I’m not sure what its purpose is.

Also of note - giving Cerebella the ability to grab a jump-back is an insane buff. It turns every single block string into a 50-50 because they always end with a grab so now jumping back to safety is no longer an option… :frowning: When Cerebella has you in the corner it’s crazy dangerous because you can’t jump back to safety anymore… and you’re forced to deal with the 50-50. Now it’s like everywhere is the corner with her. My friend who plays her even agrees that this buff is too much - she’s already one of the strongest characters in the game.

In closing - the game has been out for what… a month? Did we learn nothing from MvC3? Kneejerk balance patches because people are too lazy to figure out how to play against a character/team is not the way to do things. Give people more time to figure out how to play against it. My friend had no problem at all dealing with the team.

Edit: Patch notes/discussion are here for those wondering: http://iplaywinner.com/news/2012/5/21/mike-z-talks-upcoming-skullgirls-20-patch.html

Your still winning why you crying 10-9 sounds like a good match up

Buffing cerebella when shes already good, Wesker Shades.

he means the current patch after the patch they are making double assist suck and not be as good.

Yes… it is a great matchup and we have an insane amount of fun doing it - this footage however is PRE-PATCH!! Imagine how this match would go with:

1.) The invincibility on Double’s HK Bomber assist gone.

2.) Peacock’s teleport having an extra 3 frames of recovery.

3.) Cerebella being able to grab jump-back.

Excellabella always caught people jumping back; that is the whole point of the move. It just works after s.HK now, which is a useful restand ender for her.

Nothing is final. Sounds like your preemptively crying.

In all honesty, hornet bomber is the only assist that provides all of the following:

horizontal coverage, invincible, lockdown, untechable knockdown

Find another move in the game that will give you all of those things as an assist?

Patching is the wave of the future. Starcraft and PC games been dealing with it for years. Who moved my cheese? Deal with it. Everything listed in Mike Z’s patch notes I’m all for.

So where are these tentative patch notes?

There is a huge difference between learning to play against Sentinel and learning to play against Peacock/Double.

I’d much rather learn to play against the slow hulking robot than learn to play against a lockdown team.

I’m not preemptively crying. I’m trying to state a case for the team so that maybe people will actually pay attention.

I think you’re misunderstanding me here. I’ve got nothing against balance patches whatsoever. That said I am completely against a balance patch after only 1 or 2 months. Wait 6 months for the game to mature and THEN balance it out. If after 6 months people still have problems dealing with the Double assist… (Hint… just duck!) then give it a nerf.

Also as far as assists are concerned… Cerebella’s Diamond Drop assist forces me to jump after every single block string because you know it’s coming and the only thing I can do to get out of it is jump. (Which also sets me up for an air grab by the point character. Tell me another assist that forces you to jump after every block string… shrug Pushblock the point character and you still get grabbed by the assist. See the video above for more details. lol It’s insanely powerful but that’s what makes the game fun. I don’t think it should be nerfed at all.

The problem is if you just duck the hornet bomber assist you’re still forced to deal with a mix up. As long as the only thing he’s nerfing is the invincibility I’m fine with that.

Anyone got a list of the patch notes again?

Mike Z said that if it was up to him, the HK HB wouldn’t have been changed, but his boss people read forums and think it should be changed. No point in saying anything now.

Resets were better than long combos anyway
If you were beating Hornet Bomber before, you’ll still be beating it.

I don’t really like the precedent this sets; if the boss people see some whiners, they decide another patch is needed?

I hate playing against that stupid assist, but I don’t like having my problems solved by patching.

EDIT: Holy crap, if those patch notes are right, Double got the nerf hammer.

Well either way nothing is final and the game really is more like a work in progress than a typical full release game. I don’t mind it too much considering there’s still going to be a lot of cheap stuff in the game regardless and how all of the characters will still be very strong regardless.

I just hope Mike Z figured out something about the slowdown during low ping games online. That shit sucks.

no it doesnt. Ive blocked her air grab numerous times

So, just setting the facts straight… nearly all of the upcoming patch pertains to bugfixes or things that Mike Z was on the fence about already before release, but left in to see what would happen.

Hornet Bomber was not something he wanted to change, but unfortunately people above him “read forums too” and saw to people bitching about it. So in other words, Mike Z is only changing Hornet Bomber because the people with the money want it changed. Bitch to them, not him. It’s not his fault.

With regards to the timing of the patch, it still amazes me that people think companies can just put patches up when they want to. WRONG. Folks, patches cost money. A lot of money, somewhere to the tune of $40,000 to patch an XBLA executable (ie: the core game, not DLC data), and I’m not sure about Sony’s prices, but I know they have some. On top of that, patches have to go through certification with MS and Sony, which takes around 2-4 weeks. So, it makes perfect sense to think about the amount of changes happening when they only have so few opportunities to take care of it. They’re doing it because it’s one of the few chances they’ll get to fix things.

So ironically, those bitching at Mike Z over Hornet Bomber or the early patch are the ones having a knee-jerk reaction, because they’re reacting without knowing WHY it’s getting changed.

I wasn’t too happy about the changes at first either, but they do make a lot of sense. Making assists a little riskier, making HK bomber techable, shortening combo damage/length and making Peacock’s teleport a bit risker… these are all pretty solid ideas. I say this as a Peacock player too.

I wish walkspeed were a tiny bit faster, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if it stayed the same.

This is not funny.

wow

I wasn’t super fond of Hornet bomber either, but… wow

Hopefully they take all the time they need to think things through with this patch. The current system in place just makes it stupid hard to update fighters in a way that wouldn’t piss people off immensely. Even Capcom gets a lot of hate for things that they can’t control when it comes to patching schedules.

Still gonna be the best support character regardless IMO. The invincibility and hard knockdown was too much when there are very few assists in the game that cover horizontal range and lockdown. Unfortunately the game has worked out where beam/tatsu style assists that have long range and lockdown aren’t really much a part of the game even with the custom assists.

I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of quirky stuff with the custom assists in the future but unfortunately Double’s HK hornet bomber seems to be the only real large space control assist and therefore things have to change IMO.

I wish Mike Z could have found a way to create more space control assists instead of having to bring down the one of the few that really works but…the assists just don’t work in a way that allows for those types of assists to prominent so far it seems. Guess it’s for the best for now.

Nothing may be final - but if they’re actually talking about it openly then that means that they are extremely close to doing it and HOPEFULLY want our opinion. In my humble opinion it is way too early to even be talking about a balance patch. Again - 6 months from now nerf and buff all you want but for now it’s just too early. We have only scratched the surface of this game.
