Season 2 Suggestions/Thoughts/Whatever

Yeah man that alcohol shit at Zach’s needs to go for real. That shit’s stupid, there’s other places for that.

I did preface my earlier post stating that I was merely making suggestions. Reading it once more, I don’t really think my tone was hostel or demanding. If anyone took umbrage, I apologize. It was not my intention to offend.

Perhaps the Friday’s comment was what rubbed Frank in the wrong way. It wasn’t intended at a personal shot. I know that some people don’t even get off of work until 8:30PM. What I meant to convey was that a later start time for the events that most people want to take part in (MvC2 and ST) would ensure that everyone who really wants to play can do so. And if people want to show up late, that’s their prerogative.

Since EVO will soon pass you guys on by, playing on the same platform as the officially sanctioned format isn’t quite as imperative. So holding tournaments on the cabs would be a great way to speed things up. The suggestion for changing WF and LF also fall in line with deviating from EVO format for the purposes of making things run faster.

As for organizers not playing in OTHER tournaments (I thought I made this clear in the previous post) at the same time, it was also just a suggestion. I just thought that things would go smoother if the person running the event didn’t go play a match in another tournament forcing a lapse in pacing. But if multiple people are willing to champion the cause (as was the case in ST last season), this shouldn’t be an issue. So long as someone is making sure that the tournament setup is always being used for a match and telling people to wait on deck, efficiency isn’t a problem.

I actually felt bad when I ran Marvel tournaments last season and also played in them. Whenever I was playing my own match, there would be a pause afterwards because the following players sometimes wouldn’t be on deck. Humanities and social sciences being my background, I also didn’t want to come across as favoring anything or anyone. I thought that by taking part in the events that I was running, perhaps some people would question my objectivity. Surprisingly, it was actually participants of the ST tournament that accused me of showing favoritism. Odd, since I didn’t play ST at the time, and the only ST player I was remotely familiar with at the time was Mandel.

But I digress, the point is, I was talking about organizers playing in tournament that they’re not running. I was not asking organizers to not play in their own tournaments. And even that’s not really an issue so long as someone else can temporarily take over while they’re playing their matches.

To address the issue of HD lag, I’ve only played MvC2 on the widescreen on 2 occasions. One time, when I first arrived at the house, Zach, Rat, Row, and maybe someone else had just started playing on the HD. There was noticeable lag and we migrated upstairs after just 2 or 3 games. The other time, it was with Row, Nolan, and Theo, and there was still a lag of a couple of frames (obvious, though significantly better than the first time). So if the issue has been resolved since then, my mistake.

And yes, guests should conduct themselves in a more respectful manner. I’m not saying that alcohol should necessarily be banned. Watching people being vocally belligerent is my guilty pleasure–so long as fisticuffs don’t break out. But I do think that people who make a mess should clean it up. And throw away your own trash; especially the used cups.

If I disappointed Frank by not flaming him, sorry. Not in my nature. If I had an issue with you, I’d talk to you in person. Or at least resolve it in a PM. Keep that shit outta the public threads.

In conclusion, drunk posting is fun. I will staunchly defend the rights of all individuals to drunk post. People are more honest when they’re drunk. Though perhaps less articulate, so the thoughts might not come through coherently.

edit: fixed tons of typos. the one definitely bad thing about drunk posting.

actually casts flame ward is a wow refference…yeah i’m horrible like that.

I almost want to flame you just for making a WoW reference.

Edit: oh shit, look at this retardation. Don’t you dare say, “well, that’s Everquest and I play WoW.” The lot of you should just walk into traffic. Natural selection isn’t working fast enough.

Edit 2: I guess the previous edit is a pseudo-flame.

you know i’m not going to lie, that shit do be going on in wow, does that mean my mage is down on one knee proposing marriage to some blood elf paladin? FUCK NO, that’s just like those that play fighting games, then those niggas that be dressing up like sakura prancin around at PAX talkin about how they are so kawaii. and the lot of YA’LL can just prance your ass into a cremation tank. and don’t you dare say “those guys are fanboys, and i’m a competitve player” cause in the end it’s coming from the same game isn’t it?

see how nasty it is to categorize and stereotype a few ppl based on the majority of ppl that play the game?

and btw i know of a guy that married someone on everquest, turned out that the girl he married was really a dude.

I don’t see why we never used the big cab for tournament matches, because it would speed up the process a lot. Then again, you could always go back to the big cab for casuals once your tourney matches had taken place.

I dont know why people pretend a 5ms or something lag affects them like if they were Neo and shit. HDTV lag with the newer TVs is just a fairy tale from when the high response rate TVs first came out. We were playing CvS2 on that TV just fine, and I play on my DLP all the time without noticing lag.

As for the tournaments, I think we need to keep it mellow. I really noticed this last time at Zach’s when it was just a few of us playing casuals that when the tournaments were going on, the atmosphere was real uptight with a lot of yelling and not letting people get casuals in. I understand the tournament has to finish but this aint Evo, people like me just want to hang out and play to unwind. If someone isn’t on deck then whatever, go on to the next match instead of yelling across the house or forcing people to drop everything to just wait by the TV.

This isn’t aimed at you Keith, just a guideline for the next season to whoever runs the brackets. You did an awesome job of running these tournaments and developing the scene up here, just keep it chill. :china:

there goes my idea of wanting to run VOOT/KOF:MIRA/NGBC tourneys

Doesn’t work. It’s been tried. You let somebody on for thirty seconds, they’re greedy enough every time to want to finish the match at +2 minutes, so you quickly build up an extra hour of waiting.

The easiest thing to do is to make the brackets easily visible by all and let people know in advance who they play or might play (winner of… , loser of …) and let them work it out. If people are responsible about that (it really is a team effort), it’s really quick, easy. If people randomly disappear (which should only happen the first two rounds, as after that matchups should be pretty straightforward), they bog everything down.

I like casual and low pressure, but if you want to run a tournament, you really have to stay on top of everybody or you’ll never get anywhere. The whole thing is like herding cats as it is. You start letting me jump on to play Nolan, then Mandel has to go find SuperJoe to play Jeff, and Kyle gets tired of waiting and wanders off and has to be found again later… it’s just not a good plan. =\

Yea, I guess there’s just no easy solution. I say you install an intercom system with a soothing female voice announcing who’s on deck throughout the house. It will maintain Keith’s (and whoever else runs shit) sanity and the relaxing atmosphere.

Anybody have some baby monitors I can use for cheap intercom-ing?

Yeah well, I just went to see the oracle and she says that big TV’s and converters do cause input lag that you can feel. I guess its possible to get used to, but it does make a significant difference.

Jury is still out for me concerning Zach’s big TV downstairs, but I would imagine problems would be similar. I know the one game of CvS2 I played on it last time felt hella strange.

p.s. I know kung-fu.

That was converter lag, I’m with you on that one since that’s much more noticeable. You are truly the One.

Yeah that was because you guys were playing cvs2 on the ps3. The ps3 firmware has issues with you using non-ps3 pads in ps2 games. It is a clusterfuck, if you played cvs2 directly on a ps2 connected to that tv, then the game would have been just fine.

I have to disagree with you here. Tournaments really take forever to run, and if you have to wait for someone to show up, then what happens is the next guys goes in line to wait for his game, and then he’s not ready. Before you know it the tournament takes 10 hours to run or worse, just stalls and doesn’t finish because of lack of interest.

I am a supporter of if your name is called, then you drop your casual game instantly and go down. I helped run one of the tourneys once (with XTG) and believe me it’s WORK to be a tournament organizer.

If you can do at least two tournies at once or in one night, then why not do marvel and st/cvs2 then swap which ever one you didn’t use + marvel for the next one.

As for other games like 3s, gg or more obscure games people are suggesting, instead of thinking about a dedicated night or tournament or other such nonsense, why not just have a dedicated night to anything that isn’t marvel/st/cvs2 and just have casuals? That way people have a little bit of everything going through the scene but if something picks up then maybe we can consider it in the st/cvs2 cycle.

I don’t see why we can’t do that.

edit:

Is that what the fuck that was? Me, fatbear and some other guy where trying to play 3s on the tv and it was just horrible. Couldn’t parry or combo for shit. Wish I would’ve known you just needed a ps2. If I show up again I’ll just bring one, they’re practically free now.

Yes Gray Fox,

For some dumb ass reason, a psx stick will lag while using the pelican converter while playing a ps2 game on ps3. Even though that same stick will work just fine if you played a ps3 game like T5:DR and VF5.

It’s Fire Ward

I reckon it’s time you all dropped those shitty MAS sticks and went Japanese, just in time for the new PS3 Hori that won’t suck.

Such statments are blasphemous, I will never get rid of my happ parts. God bless AmeriKKKa.
