The first thing England did after the union was to suppress our culture, beliefs and religion. The fact Orange Walks are a legal and accepted part of so many peoples life is proof that the old spirit is more or less crushed. People who are smart enough to know our true history are either too busy out there making real money and accepting change like a whipped dog or are so few in number they arent able to exact real change.
The political niceties of the SNP actually pissed me off a little because they went out of their way not to represent the true face of the UK to avoid controversy, am sure a few of the Highland region voters would have a different opinion if they got the truth of the suppression thrown in their faces instead of vague information about oil resources or why independence is preferable over a UK government due to what they are going to do with the NHS and over social convenience.
The fact is the majority of people here have proven they want an easy way out with no distuption to the current life, they see a better tomorrow as nothing more of a gamble.
I dont think Scotland is a shithole, far from it there is no other place on earth with our potential, that aside I would give no fucks if we started seeing gun violence on USA scale on our streets, or terrorists randomly attacking or any kind of freak natural disaster happen. 1 out of 2 people I look at on the street now are confirmed fucking traitors and as much as it burns my pride to live amongst these cowards am not going to go out of my way to defend Scotland anymore, we reap what we sow.
Shame to hear that, Crucades. Alongside the greed, fear and misinformation going about, apathy was probably a big contributor to the no votes.
I see the no vote as a single step and now that the dust is settling, we’re seeing the true colours of labour and the tories, as they fight over what Scotland can or cant do. I’d like to think that seeing England make a shit job of the aftermath will spur on a strong Yes vote in the future.
I’m not sure if it was salmond’s plan to initiate an independence vote during a coalition government, but that’ll likely be gone next time around too, for better or worse.
I saw this last night, its wise and I think important that the SNP keep putting on this pressure, if things settle down too much there wont be much of a requisite demand on westminister to deliever good on their devolution promises. Also the timetable for these new powers are a joke anyway so Salmond should rattle the cages as much as he can.
You see SNP membership going through the roof? On course to be the 3rd largest political party in the UK, which is not bad considering the population of London is nearly 25% that of our country.
Eh, I’m just telling you what their general sentiment is, which seems to be a bit of indifferent mixed with national pride…too bad they weren’t allowed to vote. I did think it was a bit weird that only Scotsmen in Scotland were allowed to vote.
As for America, the American revolutionaries were for the most part rich, greedy cunts that didn’t want to pay any taxes despite all of the resources and money that the Crown was forced to spend in defending them from the French and Indians. Patriotism aside, reading colonial complaints against the British is like reading the journal of a middle schooler with an allowance rail against his parents.
Your friends are Scottish but couldn’t vote because they weren’t Scottish? Or because they weren’t in Scotland?
Anyone from the UK and even parts of the commonwealth could vote, provided they were Scottish residents.
Out of interest, why do you think the vote should have extended beyond Scottish residents? I ask because even though I live in the North of England, where unity with Scotland is needed more than ever and where Scottish independence would cause a lot of trouble, I still think it was a Scottish only matter, despite the fallout.
Giving the rest of the UK a vote on Scotland’s independence would be ludicrously tilted. “You can go, but only if we say you can go…”
this really is my philosophy in life now. When I was a kid, it was “wait for the baby boomers to retire” and they didn’t…and now they’re basically fucking up the world.
Yup. For instance, find a politician that genuinely isn’t full of shit.
They’ll almost never be a 'Boomer.
Self-entitled scum; the continued tragedies and mistakes made in this world are their fault.
i.e. Public schooling being shit because they siphon off it/leech with other government “programs”, which leads directly to ignorant youth. etc. etc.
All of it leads back to them and those like them. Only a matter of time before they all drop.
They’re Scottish, but they live abroad. Why should they be allowed to vote? Because their home country is Scotland, just because people move away doesn’t mean they cease to give a fuck or aren’t affected by what happens back home. Just as an example if Scotland got independence, they would need to get new passports and identification, in addition to changing where their Korean government pensions are forwarded to (presuming Korea’s treaties with the UK would roll over to an independent Scotland as well).
I don’t live in America, but I still vote for the president and in my hometown and state, I can still vote (and do) vote for the governor.
If Scotland went independent all Scots would need new passports and identification, not just your mates. Likewise any clerical matters like pensions would be affected for everyone.
I actually didn’t know that American’s could still vote if they weren’t residents. The way I see it and, seemingly, Scotland sees it, is that you aren’t paying tax in Scotland, you aren’t contributing to the Scottish community or their economy, you aren’t in receipt benefits, healthcare, education or in need of the Scottish emergency services, so why would you vote on them? The fact that your friends responses were simply ‘fuck England!’ shows that they’re out of touch with political Scotland too, so you’re inviting people who’s main interests in Scotland are heritage and convenience, who don’t actively contribute towards Scotland or accurately know a present Scotland beyond an emotional level to vote on matters that will change everyday life for Scottish residents…for the sake of saving some admin?
Maybe all the people who were fed up with England and not having a say in their own matters took it upon themselves to leave Scotland as it may be the only chance for self determination. And wen these most proud collection of Scots finally get a chance to vote for the country they have always wanted, England denies them any say.
oh my, how diabolical
England does it again
PS: I made it through 5 agonsizing minutes of the new Dr Who before finding ‘Its always Sunny in Philadelphia’. It had to be 6 million times better. Do you get US TV in UK? Because that ish is 6million times more enteraining than Dr.Who. Netflix for the win (or was it Hulu?) i dont know
I was obviously briefly summarizing their views, but most people that live abroad (at least here), contribute back home since they send money to the UK/Scotland, pay bills there and (the ones that make enough money) pay taxes there as well. If you’re a citizen of country then you should be entitled to have a voice in what happens with that country, that’s like a basic tenet of democracy, temporarily leaving the country doesn’t change that.
Tax doesn’t work like that over here, you cant simply choose to pay it if you’re making enough. You pay taxes where you live. Our staff that work in the UK but live in France, although British, pay French tax on their British earnings.
Saying that you send money home from time to time is an unquantifiable measure of how much you contribute. If I didn’t pay my union fees, I wouldn’t expect union support, even if I bought them the occasional box of donuts.
A lot of British workers head overseas to specifically avoid paying UK tax. Work in the likes of Dubai and Qatar is famed for it over here. I deal with contractors every day that register a house overseas and a bank overseas in a lower tax bracket. If you told them it cost them a vote they wouldn’t even think you were being serious.
And yeah we get Always Sunny. Took a while though, my girlfriend got me the NTSC box set because it was the only way to watch them all at the time. On Netflix now though. (Most smart Brits use American Netflix anyway, you guys get 4 times as much stuff for the same price)
NTSC. We had a toggle switch on the VHS. But trying to play UK records on american record players was always a frustrating experience. Could never get that right speed, almost though. hahaa
So, is Always Sunny funny to Brits, or no? I just cant get into any UK shows. Is drWho as good as people say? What is a good UK show? Even when I lived there, couldnt do it. Of course there were only 4 channels back then in Scotland (3 british, 1 Scotish). I am assuming you got way more now Scotland. Damn Im sounding old in this one.
