Scientists Say Air Pollution in China resembles a Nuclear Winter, Growth of Food Supply Threatened

Not really got much to add per se. I live in Changchun (in Jilin province), the air quality sucks, apparently the skies were orange last week (I was in Harbin at the time). Worse here than Beijing or Guangzhou. Many reasons for it, it’s colder and all we do is burn coal to keep everyone warm, also I heard most of the cars made in China are made in this city.

LA!

This really is a world problem though. The west is what caused this stuff by turning to cheap Chinese labour, now China can make everything themselves and want to catch up to the west in terms of industrialisation and are going about it the worst possible way, which in fairness the west did too, but they ALREADY did it, so now it’s easy to say “omg, why no care bout da viroments!?”.

Silver lining to the giant global smog cloud, those photos were kind of beautiful.

Mexicans make better Chinese Food anyway :coffee:

Wait, so the west told China to industrialize but not put in place any of the environmental standards the west itself had been using for DECADES? No. China did this to themselves. They could have wisely learned from out mistakes, but they chose to charge right ahead without any safety regulations at the expense of their population and environment. There’s no other country in the world that has problems on like these on the scale China does now. The west merely gave China the ball, China itself decided how it would play it. So these problems are the fault of China and China alone.

Instead of cyber punk, I was thinking china would be underground, more like gurrn lagann than anthing else.

Damn… I had no idea china was that bad.

Now i see why china is trying so hard to get in good with Canada. We got that shit and they don’t…or won’t in about 10 years.

horrible, right? i mean murica would never do something this bad, ever, right. we all know china is fucking up and there’s not much anybody can do about it. pointing fingers is easy, has ANY of you hypocrites ever actually done something, anything to try and change the coutry you yourself are living in?

since the topic is polution i’ll leave this here.

stop being such a faggot
the rest of the world does nothing but talk shit on america 24/7
it’s not our fault the chinese government is more concerned with face than heart, and we’re allowed to ridicule them for it to our heart’s content.

I could give a fuck if china fell off the earth

Canada is gonna be magically richer in like 10 years. Our north is thawing, which means we can finally get at them minerals and ores and shits. We probably got room for a billion chinese, although only the womens will be allowed to cum.

Show me the part where I said the US has never done stuff like this. I know we have, but we fortunately learned our lesson and for the most part, seem committed to fixing some of the damage we’ve done. The Chinese government & businesses, if they were smart, would have learned from our mistakes, but they haven’t and now they’re paying for it. And it’s going to cost them a lot more time and money to try to fix the damage and find alternative places for resources than it would have had they just done it right in the first place.

The sad part in this case, is that the people hit hardest by all this are people who probably don’t benefit/can’t afford the things being made that are fucking up the environment so badly. And because of the way China’s political system is, the government will just continue to turn a blind eye to it and pretend like everything is okay.

The pic in the OP really creeps me out. Not having fresh air to breathe would be maddening.

Plus all that water to bottle up and sell once that shit melts.

LOL, you do realize that there is already a shortage of women in China. That being said, almost 80% of all CO2 currently in the atmosphere is from the West(think Industrial Revolution and onward) and on top of that there are some estimates that say that 1/3rd of the CO2 China produces is as a result of exports to the West.

At the end of the day, we can play the blame game all we want, but this is a collective problem…

NO,

they aren’t. You are missing a very important factor. It’s the lack of regulation that made China the money it has today, and given it the ability to go from backwards to modern in a very short time. They don’t have the luxury that Japan had in the 60’s and 70’s, where they where the sole exporter of high end electronics and many practical engineering solutions.

If it wasn’t China it would have been another country, and at soon, once, and that’s if China picks itself up, Africa will become the new China. Economics drives these things, it was industrialize and start feeding mouths to stay in power, or lose it all and have 1+ billion folks crying for change. You don’t get the luxury of having growth with massive restrictions in place, it doesn’t work like that, and with costs being shifted, to the consumer, companies could have gone else where.

Being truly environmentally friendly is overtly expensive, and often, very resource heavy, and the reason why companies moved out of the states. this isn’t just China’s problems, it’s the west’s bitching and complaining about having low prices, while expecting companies to be completely green.

There were more/ larger photos of the smog around Beijing on other sites.

But proper recycling, corp. buying “carbon offset” bullcrap, and waste of things that don’t break down well like electronics aren’t what anyone wants to talk about. Since there’s no money in that.

China does like the the NBA a lot.

OKC vs MSG Thunder in your Knickerbockers?

you do realize that when you’re burning coal to make lead paint childrens toys, you dont really get to blame America for wanting merchandise to sell, for your pollution.

Stay missing the point.

Yeah, you just have to worry about e.coli…

That’s not true. Reason why a lot of these plants pollute is because the folks who run the companies as well as the operators just don’t care and they won’t care unless you force them i.e. lawsuits and legislations.

THat’s part of it, but the underlying idea behind not having “clean” plants is becasue it slows production when retrofitting, and it cuts into costs. Of course if you initroduce legislation and lawsuits, the operators are going to care because then that becomes more expensive than running a dirty plant. all Legislation and Lawsuits do is make the operating costs go so far up, that it becomes cheaper to buy a new clean facility.
