I don’t like war, but it’d be ‘interesting’ to see them flex on Japan, and the results (I bet a bunch of weaboos would sign up). They still have old hats and people still carrying the torch from WWII to want to see it happen.

I really hope they can fix this shit as Beijing is amazing, and it’s sad to see stuff like this in general. There’s still more China I need to see, but not like this.

Hong Kong isn’t as bad. Hong Kong is about a thousand miles south of the pollution epicenter, which is Beijing plus lots of the area south of it.

I think if we’re going to see layered cities any time soon, Japan would be the one to make it happen. As densely populated as it is, they’re the most desperate for space.

Given continued depopulation, very unlikely. Sure, compared to colony countries Japan seems densely populated… but outside of the main areas… different story altogether. Poperty prices in areas just outside of cities are going down, down, down - much cheaper than in countries such as Australia which ironically has no population density and mad skyrocketing property prices…

I mentioned it before but it seems worth saying again here. In 2010 I was in Hong Kong for 3 days and wondered why so many people wore surgical masks. And for a week after I back to the US, every time I sneezed my snot and boogers were jet black, I’m talking if I sneezed on black leather or a PS3 the mucus would blend in perfectly.

China has the most factories of any nation so obviously it will display the costly negative effects of speeding up industrialization without taking the proper precautionary measures first, but what about all the countless other nations that also prematurely jumpstarted modern industrialization transition? 99% of them don’t have nearly as much capital to take what few saftey measures China does, so if China is this bad already I can’t imagine how it must be in other places.

They’ll also be out of drinking water pretty soon. And having a huge number of young men with nothing to lose. The math, to me anyway, amounts to stuff = boom.

The world economy is tied to a model that demands continual and exponential growth, however it seems China is even more vulnerable to this. We’ve all heard for the longest time that the economic bubble in China is dangerously close to popping, pushing for ever more aggressive efforts to increase production regardless of long term consequences.

This pollution illustrates that this model is not only unsustainable from an economic perspective, but an environmental one as well. To my knowledge no one twisted China’s arm and forced them into this situation.

And now the most densely populated country in the world is facing a potential food crisis. It concerns me of the humanitarian costs, but also the political fallout. Famine has the potential to cause wars.

A linear, one-way manufacturing process is lovely. Take ecosystems and nonrenewable resources, turn them into 55" monster TVs during three trips 'round the globe, and get trash as a result. Cycle stops there. Lovely, innit? Dial it back a bit, and agriculture+some people = desert + a hell of a lot of hungry people. Damn, we’re a bunch of geniuses.

As permaculturist Toby Hemenway put it, it’s probably fine to use a lot of resources. Hell, nature does so all the time. The difference is that it recycles most things really efficiently so it can actually continue that resource use. That, and it doesn’t poison the shit out of everyhing in the course of its existence.
