SBR ST tourney: 1st Daigo, 2nd Frank Bisel, 3rd Sabin

To play Dic your name has to start with za. Henceforth I will be known as: zageo.

It has nothing to do with portraits. It’s 1P side and 2P side specific, doesn’t matter which side Dictator’s portrait is on, and not ‘near and far side’ specific. If you watch the videos you’ll see that the four hit variation is always performed when the opponent has his back to the 1P side. The way it was explained to me before was that it was near side specific but that is actually wrong.

The four hit psycho magic block string, either ‘st.lk, cr.mk, mp.psycho’ or ‘st.lk, cr.mp, mp.psycho’, is done when the opponent has his back to the 1P side. Doesn’t matter whose portrait is there as long as the person has his back to the 1P side.

The 2P side variation, ‘cr.lp, cr.lp, st.lk, mp.psycho’, has to be done on the 2P side because the game has a charge penalty on the 2P side corner. So because you have less time to charge the psycho crusher on the 2P side corner, you need to create a string with extra hits that allows you to get the necessary amount of charge for the psycho crusher. And the 2P side psycho magic block string is frame tight at almost every point timing wise. Certainly not easy.

Near and far side specific only applies to the corner pass trick that Dictator has where he can knock you down in the corner and psycho crush behind you for ground crossup shenanigans. Speaking of that if someone, CigarBoB I’m looking at you, has Zazza’s video tutorial on the corner pass trick, do upload it please.

The 1P side one can be reversal thrown after the psycho crusher or reversal attacked but that’s risky as reversal attacks often require the joystick to be moved out of a block position. The 2P side one is literally frame tight and only possible to be escaped when the opponent makes an execution mistake (which happens more often than not). Taking the hit to avoid the string is a good choice sometimes as well. In the YuuVega versus Gian example you see he gets knocked down then takes the hit from the jumping medium kick to avoid getting reset into the block string.

I stand corrected!

Thanks for the great info VirtuaFighterFour, you are very knowledgeable as always.

I always practiced in the HDR training mode with me as 1P, so I never ran into the 2P breakdown.

This info is also great because it covers the charge problems I sometimes encounter performing corner combos.

Yeah, that was the game logic I was working off of.

I have all those Zazza tutorial vids on my HD. However, I am reluctant to post them unless I know Zazza is cool with it.

I don’t know his reasons for taking them down.

I see a lot of Japanese players taking hits to help control game positioning. It’s an art all to itself and while I do it some, I hope to figure out all the nuances of when and how to do it.

This explains why I see the Dhalsim player getting hit by the second hit of the Psycho Crusher in the video. Since if the first hit kept them in block stun until the second, then they would no be able to get hit by the second hit.

That’s really awesome info, will definitely remember to try this.

This is Dictator specific, or is it a universal thing? What’s the charge penalty?

It’s universal. Lots of Boxer’s corner combos are side specific as well. I have no idea what the exact value is off of the top of my head for the charge penalty. But it’s extremely noticeable when you try to do charge combos on an opponent who is cornered in the 2P side and they won’t work, but then magically they work on the 1P side.
