congrats to KOF team. props to US team for making the trip and competing against the best.
personal note, I had hoped Justin used Rufus instead of Boxer considering SBO is more than just countering Umehara and ended up that Rufus players did fairly well.
some of you people are taking the whole marn taunting thing a bit too personally. i mean, look at this vid…

the ryu taunts and then finishes the round…and what does the announcer and some of the people watching do? they laugh. it’s in good fun. it might piss off the player he’s playing against but who cares.
yall need to chill out. for most of you talking shit, yall have this idea in your head of the japanese culture and what you think it’s like…most of you have have NO idea what japanese culture is like. yeah, they tend to be more humble, etc but they have their fair share of fun and shit talk. but in america, there doesn’t seem to be much humbleness from the public eye but it’s there, you’re just not involved in the scene.
if you don’t like how marn is representing america, how bout yall just get better and represent for us?
does this mean i like marn? no, i actually don’t like him at ALL, but that’s because of what he did to my buddy back in the day. it showed me that he does ANYTHING to fuckin win a match whether or not it’s disrespectful to the other player. i can never respect marn as a person but as a player he’s pretty good.
The Chun play beat Daigo on the first game, then Daigo came back and won the next two. I know what i saw. I can’t post video to prove it because they don’t allow to post evo video in this forum.
If you are pleasant to work with a sponsor will be happy to pay for you to go to tournaments. They will pay you to demo their products at trade shows. They will pay for your plane ticket and hotel room. You get to meet interesting people. You will get paid to do what you love to do. It’s a blast. It’s almost a fantasy life while it lasts. (I used to play competitively in fps and had a sponsor)
You may or may not have a sponsor. Having a sponsor makes things easier. Whether you do or don’t have a sponsor, having an outburst on a forum is not a good thing. If you have a sponsor, they might get upset with you and dump you. If you do not have a sponsor, the potential sponsors will see you as a liability.
Last reason you (Marn) in particular should not have an outburst. You are not safe like the anonymous hoards that lurk on the internet. Why? Because people know you and there is face attached to the name. And lets face it, people are insane and sometimes do irrational things. Like travel long distances just to punch someone in the face in real life, or worse. (lookup Lisa Nowak)
You will always have critics. Do not let the critics upset you.
I’m pretty sure this has happened to Smedley from SOE when they screwed up Star Wars Galaxies. Someone flew to some convention in Cali and punched him in his ugly fat face.
I think this has happened at Blizzcon before as well.
Still, they made it, unlike some who would rather sit on their butts and be arm-chair qbs. The thing about it is, yes, they lost. But who cares. These guys should should serve as an inspiration for everyone and as for the guys that made it, should be a motivation. The thing about it is, while we see a level difference, it can be caught up in some ways or another (question is, how long). SFIV is still new to the states in terms of the learning curve, but we have the talent pool just as much as Japan.
Problem is…everyone that are good, can’t devote as much time as they used to back in the days (20 hours minimum), so no one can blame them. Given time, US will catch up to Japan, some people are being too critical on the US teams. Sucks but instead of just saying “hey, better luck next time” I see this (the one quoted). Sad but, I truly hope this isn’t how majority of the country feels because if you don’t like the people that qualified, that’s your deal, but if it’s under the same flag you’re waving, you should be disappointed for their loss, but be proud that at least they had the balls to go up there and rep.
I don’t think marn’s “attitude” matters that much.
he’s one of a handful of americans with the dedication and skill who are willing to fly across the world to play in a japanese tournament where they don’t speak the language and they aren’t part of the community and he played his best.
respect that.
that’s got to be stressful/fun/hard/scary a whole bunch of shit mixed in. anyone who has ever competed in anything will tell you it’s hard, video game or swim meet or water polo match whatever, people are putting time and effort in and should be respected for what they are trying to do.
So many old adages come to mind to sum up the ebeef that’s-a-cooking, but honestly marn (I don’t know you so please excuse if I take a familiar tone), like Lincoln said, ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time. You can only please some of the people some of the time’. You’ll have you’re fair share of detractors for whatever reason the see fit to nit-pick at, but you also have your supporters. Like it or not, you’re on the short list of folks on the top of the hill and so everything you do is both highly visible and susceptible to scrutiny. I’m not defending folks on their opinions and I’m not condoning your response…I’m just saying…good shit, better luck next year.
