SBO/EVO QUALIFIERS / Midwest Championships (Northbrook, IL) June 20-22, 2008

If $4/ gallon gas doesn’t scare him onto a plane, nothing will. Someone needs to knock him out with a 2x4, B.A. Barrackas A-Team-style.

I’m probably going to show up. I usually drive down with Jesse, so if he goes I’m in. I’m willing to do some MMs, but I guess I’m unsure what you mean by the Blanka-Fei part of your request. Do I play Fei vs. your Blanka? Or, could we just play whatever characters we want for the games?

Wes: I wish that would be the case, though once he’s awakened, he’d probably start squealing like a girl. Needless to say, my partner is probably not showing up! You know, he qualified for Japan once before when the qualifiers were in Southern California. He just decided not to go on the plane to Japan.

I grew up in the 90s and was there since day 1 when SFII was released, so I know exactly what you are saying. Things today aren’t like they used to be - the whole social gaming scene that existed in arcades is pretty much dead. It’s only at small places like TGA or CF that you get to see that again (I’m sure there are more but I’m speaking of the New England area). I have shitloads of fun every time I go to TGA because it’s just an experience you can only get inside of an arcade. Even though the vast majority of arcades are dead, I feel that the culture itself is still alive and well inside people that were around during that era.

I also agree with you that people who were experts on arcade are not necessarily good on console, and vice versa. It’s kind of funny for me, because when I started to take Street Fighter seriously (around the MvC1 era), I only played on arcade. Console was kind of an afterthought until maybe 1-2 years into MvC2, when arcades started closing down. But now here we are in 2008, and I can say that I’m WAY better on console for games like ST, 3s, and CvS2 than I am on arcade. Then again, when I play at TGA on Japanese controls, I seem to do fine. However, my MvC2 game now sucks monkey ass. Would it have been any better if I stayed playing on arcade controls diligently? Who knows.

When I think about this though, I think about some of the OG players who were almost unstoppable in the 90s, but then all of a sudden started losing when things went over to console. I actually get pissed off when I see people like Valle and Watson losing on console, and then getting upset. Let’s face it, I will NEVER get to play them on an even playing field, because I suck on arcade controls, and they’re not used to console. You can argue that we are actually playing two completely separate games, because in my opinion we are. I wish I was older in the 90s so I could have traveled to tournaments on arcade when ST was in it’s prime, but unfortunately things didn’t work out that way. So now we’ve got two completely different sets of players - the ones that were the best on the arcade versions of the game, and the ones that are the best on console - and there is no way to fairly determine who is better. BALLS!

THat’s why I am crossing my fingers that this Jamma/PS converter works right for next year.

You can argue that we are actually playing two completely separate games

Oh, goodness…anyone that makes that argument knows nothing about video games.

Wait, but isnt that what Dream is saying?? I thought you agreed with that??

I didn’t say that, DSP did.

Well just like I want to take a crack at NKI’s Chun I want to try my luck vs. your Fei… or Ken. And Shirts’s O.Dhalsim if he makes it!

But I’ll run my Blanka vs. whatever character if you prefer.

What I meant to say is, that isnt what Phil is saying the same thing you are saying? Or do you just mean that from the stick aspect its a different thing, but its not a completely different game.

I mean that me standing on stable surface vs me sitting holding stick down with no free hand movement = different, but in terms of the nuances and all that, DSP is referring to something else altogether.

He’s just talking about things like PS1 tournament, he beats Watson and CHoi on console. CHoi can’t uppercut Vega jump-ins with OG Sagat. I don’t think I’ve EVER seen Choi miss that uppercut cept on console…he just means that no one will ever play their best anymore cept the ones more dedicated to console= different game

I honestly don’t care what version I played as long as there was no lag, and I could stand and do instant moves without having to hold the joystick down with the bottom parts of my hands.

The way it’s sounding, it’s like no one bothered to just learn how to play their games on everything. I always told people if you’re gonna play fighting games, go ahead and use your controller, but you should also learn to play with a stick because when you take your shit to the arcade, thats all you’ll have to work with and you can’t really bitch much…

Now a days though…what I use for a game depends on the game itself…but I’m willing to use whatever is around, 'cause as long as it works and my moves come out when I tell 'em to, it’s all good (OG Arcade Law: Work with what you got and fight hard.)

im looking for a 3s team… anyone interested? send me a pm i guess and ill think about it

LOL, you should read what you wrote

Funk Doc - Team Cincy Classic ST team?

Humbag, if I decide to go, I would be happy to. I’ll decide within a week or so here, its gonna be a crazy summer, though.

I understand all of that, but i already talked to the community about when they want it, and they wanted saturday. I’m aware that they’ll be trumped for GG and so on, but it wasn’t my personal decision. I’m fine with either day, but Saturday was what people wanted, so im just rolling with it. Thanks for the advice, but it’ll be ok.

What are the smash rules for this tourny?

if sf4 hits us arcades, if t6 ever comes out here in arcades, and when blazblue hits arcades, and hell, maybe even kof12, and keep that shit arcade onyl for a bt, thatll drag people back to the arcades, if even only for a little while =)

I haven’t read anything concrete yet, but most tourneys are 1on1, 3 or 4 stock, items off. I much preferred the rules Chicago played by way back when; 4 man free for all, items defaulted, 2 people move on per match, the winner (obviously) and the player with the most kills, to keep things aggressive . Smash isn’t the average fighter, trying to handcuff it to play similar to a standard fighters kinda defeats the purpose, for me anyway.

Not that it’s gonna keep me from entering, though.:karate:
