SBO/EVO QUALIFIERS / Midwest Championships (Northbrook, IL) June 20-22, 2008

You really don’t know how bad it is. Imagine being a sardine inside of a sardine can trying to play ST on a tiny cab, with iffy controls and all kinds of shit going on around you - last time I was there, there was a dancing game to the left where people literally would jump off and smash into you. Let alone you couldn’t hear a fucking thing going on in ST. Then you try to play XSF and the buttons are broken, you try to play 3s and one side’s joystick is twitchy…yeah. When you lose once to any of these factors, instead of good comp (which really doesn’t exist there besides MvC2), you want to destroy the cabinet with a sledgehammer. Fuck CF.

Seeing how it’s my home arcad, and I have no problem playing ST on that cabinet, I find it kind of hard to have any sympathy. Especially considering youve been playing at the Break for years. Man up. :razzy:

By the way Hi phil, its been a while.

The Break cabs aren’t tiny, but now we’ve hijacked the thread with my CF hate.

At least at Midwest there will be bigger cabs!

DSP: MAN UP like Sabin says =P

Seriously though, you don’t know what small is til you played on the 19 inch one I put at the arcade out here in TN. That game makes $5 a week. Seriously.

CF hate aside, the man just doesn’t want to put money on the line on something he doesn’t feel comfortable playing on.
LOL @ everybody trying to pressure him so he can accept the money matches.

Unless you’re borderline retarded, there’s no way you’ll lose. Jion is like the worst SF player I’ve ever seen. His entire game revolves around spamming jump-ins with whatever character he picks.

Awww the jumping fierce only with twelve was funny! Why edit that out :frowning:

blerg

Just for old times sake, when EVO switched to console for the first time. Check out some of the posts from THEN, and some of the posts NOW =)

I’ll be bringing my own TV and Laptop for this setup, so it doesn’t interfere with the official tournaments. And as said before, if called for the official tournaments, those take #1 priority. But yeah, i’ll be running these, so hopefully all goes well. Melty was Friday last year, but the few people who responded to me on meltybread said Sat was better, so i’m going with that.

I wish the archives were purged. Reading that gave me a headache.

yeay o:

i’ll definitely help you run it with a set up of my own

also, are we gonna use the jp ps2 version? i’m sure a lot of people have played it on the u.s. version but it suffers from random lags (as well as the overall presentation being not as nice compared to the jp version)

SHirts is scared of the plane. That is all.

Made me sound a little too vindictive, lol. Seriously though, that shit was on the ground for maybe 5 seconds the whole match. If it wasn’t jump fierce, it was random ass dives.

This tourney will be super epic. HYPE!!!

I mean of course, I’m going to be playing SF with the rest of the cranky old men in wheelchairs by the arcade cabinet, :encore: but Arcana is equally as important for me, if not more so. and seeing as how the midwest supports arcana…this should be a bomb side tourney.

Just everyone needs to keep in mind, ESPECIALLY since this is on Saturday, that DreamTR’s OFFICIAL tourneys will take precedence over arcana matches, so things might be moving along a bit slowly. But none the less, I predict Arcana will be the hypest side tourney at MWC by far, with niggas getting loud and HYPHY IN THIS BITCH!!!

But seriously, hope people will show up and support, or even get a huge crowd going around arcana, (and melty blood too!) since we’re trying to make these games big in the US…

Anyone from the midwest or out of state wanna money match me in Arcana? XD

Just as a point of reference, keep in mind that back then a lot of things were very different:

  1. There was no “standard version” of a game for tournament play. Nobody knew what version of what game to play on console, and they had differences.

  2. Very few people owned tournament-worthy joysticks, and lots of arcade pro gamers had to go out and invest in something that they ultimately would play worse on.

  3. There was some insane discussion about how you could play MvC2 on a joystick that wasn’t attached to a cab. Remember, these were the days of Bryheem Keyes smashing the living shit out of the controls to distract you during a game. Understandably there was some concern.

Also, I was a shitty Marvel player back then and hadn’t really broken out into other games. So I really had no point of reference besides my arcade MvC2 experience. In retrospect, it was moving to consoles that allowed me to practice and become as good as I am today at multiple games - there hasn’t been an ST cabinet in Connecticut since the 90s, so just imagine what would have happened there if not for consoles. Moving to consoles was a good decision, but nobody could see that at the time besides EVO staff.

Please keep in mind that per the schedule, you will be competing with games such as CvS2 and Guilty Gear on Saturday. both of which run long and will be on console. My personal recommendation would be to do large side tournaments such as this on Friday, when there will be next to nothing on console, and probably the majority of TVs will be free. There WILL be people there on Friday since that is when 3s is being held. However, being that this is an unofficial tournament, it is your choice. Just know that if more space/resources are needed for official tournaments, or if people in your events are needed in the official games, you will be trumped.

This is the final Rob vs Art runback for a long time to come. Epic indeed.

As one of those cranky old people, I too, will be playing and hyping the shit out of this tourney. We should run a Chicago vs NYC 4v4 at 20 dollars a head(I doubt anybody would front more cash, but yeah).

I can’t wait to see the hate come alive. I know I’m gonna go headhunting for some Chicago heads. Gotta rep NYC to the fullest. We started this shit after all.

Get hype for MWC Arcana, bitches. So far, I only have one mm against Nappyjin. Let’s go, Orka. You know you want that runback from FR.

  1. Disagreed on Point 1. Naomi versions for Arcade with Dreamcast were pretty much on point sans the slower arcade speed. Pretty much everyone played/practiced on Dreamcast anyway at home to hone up their skills on the Naomi stuff.

  2. I Disagree on this too. MAS Sticks have been around for years, and I would definitely deem those “tournament” worthy. Dreamcast Green Japanese stick, and who knows what else. The stick were out there. The only thing that wasn’t out there was the influx of custom stick makers with Sanwa/Seimitsu madness capabilities, but the items were available.

  3. This is merely because most people back then preferred arcade. The whole reason behind why American cabinets are being used in the first place with American sticks is because US players are very “rough” on the controls, whereas the Japanese players are a bit more finessed. Most of the new players weren’t even around when arcades were a force, so they can play on a Japanese stick, as they were introduced and taught to use them from the getgo.

I think my biggest gripe is that the majority of console players do not see why Arcade players can’t adjust as well to console, but they themselves prefer their own sticks and complain about not being able to have ample room when they play, etc. It goes both ways, and it seems the argument will never end. I need to stand when I play, and the stick needs to be on a stable surface, so I’m 100% screwed unless I bring a custom arcade itself.

EVO was not the only one that knew things would have to go to console. Capcom ceasing operations, the death of arcades, and difficulty of storing/obtaining cabinets made this a no-brainer in terms of a business decision. If you don’t have any arcades, and people are only really playing at home, you’re just going to open the floodgates with more and more people showing up to play since they can bring their own pad/stick.

Now to say this is the “future”, you really need to sit down and think about what you are saying. How anyone can think that sitting on floor/chairs with sticks in laps/legs holding sticks down playing on AV 20 inch TVs is more futuristic than a nice RGB style cabinet standing/sitting in stools is beyond me.

The “arcade” persay is not dead. It’s alive and well, just in different formats. Gameworks and Dave & Busters have all the latest games, but don’t particularly keep up to date on fighting games because they are niche in the US for the ones that people want to play. Considering the “newest” Capcom game is still 7 years old (CVS2), all of us are playing on something that is basically borderline relic style.

Sure, it’s all we’ve got, which is why I want to keep the arcade scene alive by eventually putting converters in some of these cabinets so PS controls can be used, but it’s difficult to deny that the combination of arcades going under, players not wanting to go to arcades, and consoles catching up in quality for graphics, it’s a shame that everyone else does not get the social aspect of arcades that places in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan still thrive on today.

Yes! I’ll be entering both. Can’t wait to play.:bgrin:
