you guys should probably make a seperate thread for the qualifiers.
Okay 1 less console player there…
enjoy your arcade tournament…
I’ll be there with some more people from Montreal…(and Im happy cvs2 is on console)
Idiots.
Lmao
If you don’t like arcade… I got two words for ya:
SUCK IT!!
END OF DISCUSSION like Sabre said. Let us arcade lovers have one tournament for the love of all that is fn’g holy.
Can’t wait for this jason. It is going to be so much fun.
Ugh couldnt resist to post again:
The problem isnt it being on arcade or being american controls, the problem is in the cabs themselves.
100% of the problems last year were due to problems in the cabinets (stick mounts for example).
This issue im sure will be properly addressed by the staff (DreamTR and Sabre).
I really have no problem with american controls (former happ player before switching to sanwa). The only problem i have with american controls are the new 360’s which are problem prone nowadays. Besides MvC2 I do not see any reason to use those over switch sticks (easier to set up and cheaper to buy).
But in the end, i dont care to much. I just hope you guys dont use super hard springs lol.
poon: lol i think i see John Choi in the picture.
edit:
Just throwing out this possibility: as much as ive heard about the newer 360’s as of late why not let people vote in this thread for what american stick to use for like 3s for example. Whether it be iL competitions, supers, or 360’s.
Just a thought.
If I have the money in June I am comming just for ST.
Sucks that it’s on American cab though.
Will the Competition sticks be the white actuator (IL made) or black actuator ones (Happ made) as Happ recently started making their own “Competitions” instead of buying them from Industrias Lorenzo which basically fucked up the stick sort of like with a P360 only worse as now almost all Happ-made comps seem to have random manufacturing problems. Ultimates are not the best sticks in the world (actually they are pretty horrible but at least you know what you are getting and how it will play) but they, along with the Super, are the only sticks Happ has not fucked them up yet (not much to mess up on the Ultimate but when Happ eventually starts producing them themselves, they probably will ruin something). Also, the buttons will be convex right?
About the arcade vs console complaints: As an primarily ST player, I am amazed at all the people who would rather play on console than on an arcade cabinet. Who cares if it has American sticks with a long throw? Move your hand faster. You are too fat to play with another person on a cab? Lose some weight. You have time. I myself prefer Japanese sticks over American ones as they are much more reliable. If the American sticks actually function correctly, then I have no real problems with them.
About joystick complaints: Its a fucking joystick. As long as it registers all 8 directions with microswitches or optical sensors and returns to neutral when you let go of it, then you can play SF on it better than on 99.9% of controller pads. The Happ-made, black actuator Comps actually have problems with the basic fundamentals of registering directions sometimes so that is why I am inquiring about them.
primarily from what I’ve read, the console suggestion is about the SBO qualifiers. upholding American tradition is something I have no problem with; I’ll gladly switch characters in 3s in order to make up for my lack of experience with american sticks. gotta do what it takes. as far as the qualifiers go however, I see it as a major concern(again maybe not for ST, but 3s). I understand what DreamTR is saying about not being able to provide Japanese sticks, but the fact that’s the case for SBO qualifiers is distressing. Even in Japan the players are given the option. since there’s already been evidence of other SBO quals having used console(currently the only realistic way to provide players that option) , I guess I’ll see how this goes.

Growing up in the arcades you had to learn to adapt to what ever the arcade had. And if your area had more then one arcade, each one would have a different setup, which you had to adjust to. And no complaining about how your not used to this or that stick, was a vaild excuse on why you lost. You either put up or shut up.
Happ (IL) stick and buttons, Sanwa stick and buttons. It dosn’t matter. Give me 5min to get used to it and I’ll be just fine. Which means I’ll get destroyed, but that’s a different issue.
We’ve used some of the black-actuator Happ Competitions without much trouble at Family Fun Arcade. As long as your switches are in good condition, that is. The black actuators sometimes trigger inappropriately when the stick is twisted because they’re a lot more snug around the metal shaft than the white IL actuators, but some lithium grease mitigates that problem. I’m not aware of any other problems with them registering directions.
Also, Jason Wilson mentioned using hard springs for Happ Competitions- this is FTW. A Happ Competition with new switches and a hard spring or a P360* spring is on par with a classic, fully functioning P360. Most players don’t even notice the difference, this is fact. My biggest gripe, if any, are the declining quality of Cherry microswitches, but this is only apparent after extended use. Brand new Cherrys are still extremely functional. On a personal note, I can perform standing 720s on a Happ Comp better than on a P360.
In any case, Jason Wilson’s extensive experience with arcade equipment means your controls will be nothing short of excellent. I understand if your primary control setup is Japanese, but there’s plenty of time between now and June to practice on US sticks. Ponyboy of Rollie Electronics supplies the original Industrial Lorenzo Competition sticks with Hard Springs(!) at VERY reasonable prices.
*Don’t use a P360 spring in a Happ Competition for extended periods of time. The P360 spring has even more tensile strength than the hard spring designed for the Happ Competition and can fracture the plastic cylindrical support resting directly upon it.
Regarding Japanese controls:
On a side-by-side setup, there’s no way to get a US vs JP configuration set up that’s hot-swappable to US vs US or JP vs JP without an unreasonable amount of reconfiguring between matches. Since SBO rules dictate Arcade Equipment as mandatory, this is a moot point. Even Tekken players are banned from using PS2 pads at SBO. No joke.
(Europe may be an exception because of the lack of available arcade equipment.)
You mean cabinet. It was ONE deluxe cabinet with the stick not mounted properly in a centered position. That was the main issue. The other cabinets, everything worked fine, some people just did not have enough room on a 25 inch Q Sound cabinet, and others couldn’t use Japanese sticks that they became accustomed to playing on console. The fact still remains, the results of the tourney always remain the same. Justin plays on whatever we throw at him, and he manages to win. Now if people can’t do their special combo they can only pull off on their special stick while sitting on the floor, all I can say is there is preparation involved with practicing on American sticks beforehand just like it always was with going to tournaments (home field advantage as we say). Of course, everyone knows this months in advance, and I will be at the arcade a couple of days EARLY this year to make sure the cabinets are in the best shape for the SBO qualifiers.
As far as MVC2 goes, I’m surprised they like 360s to be honest. You need crazy angle jumping for Magneto, but that is the most requested.
Fact still remains, everyone knows this is going to be arcade, everyone knows from every year we’ve done 3s it’s going to be arcade, so yes, it does get old for everyone to complain about this not being on console. Especially for SBO when ON TOP OF THE GAME BEING DIFFERENT ON PS2, rules state we are using arcade architecture.
With that said, please don’t post anything else related to why this is not on console or any of that jazz. It’s a shame some people just won’t support arcades, then wonder why it’s going to be tough to ever get a Tekken 6/SFIV, etc in the area. If you have specific questions in regards to the tournaments, Sabre and I will answer them as best as possible, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone there!
I’ve always found that funny… Everyone says how hard it is to find corners on 360s, but in the game that requires hitting corners all the time, at quick speeds, from weird-ass angles, with 100% precision… EVERYONE uses 360s. :looney:
You just have to learn how to play on them.
I applaud Dream for sticking with arcade. Everyone’s a damn prima donna these days. I’m no old-school arcade warrior, but I came up around the late 90’s early 2000’s, and you had to be able to play on whatever the fuck. 360’s, Ultimate, Comps, broken Comps, convex, concave, big cab, small cab with a fat guy… whatever.
Just learn to deal with it.
I just argued the SBO 3s qual for PS2 thing since Europe supposedly did it. I don’t care what DreamTR runs the rest of his tourney on. If you don’t like simply don’t go. (don’t pick bums for your team Wongy!!:lovin:).
What id particularly want to know is if the Europeans broke the SBO rules or if there was some sort of exception , I always thought they had arcades around.
can the rules of SBO even be broken sage? is that possible? i was under the assumption that all SBO qualifiers had an official Rep person there to oversee everything?
either way. MWC!!!
jason: if you need comp sticks, or atleast white actuators, let me know, i can get em
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm this is looking pretty good now
Team Brandon is gonna win 3S Teams.
Me, Justin, and That Guy from NC.
Undefeated in 3S!
Too much griping in this thread… Not enough anticipation!
C’mon, an SBO Qualifier in the Midwest!?
I can’t wait to see what beastly teams develop for this qualifier for both ST and 3S.
It’s gonna be a weekend to remember.
