iirc the SBO qual tourney is 1v1, and also for those people interested there will be regular side tourneys for all the others games GGXXS, ST, CvS2, MvC2 probably KOFXI not sure what else. It should be announced soon.
This sounds good! I’ve been hearing and seeing alot of good things from Tokyo Game Action and It will be good to play there. You guys are doing stuff CF has failed to do in all its years. CF is so lame but thats another topic!
Andy: I understand Japan is giving a spot to the US for 3S but do you know or can you find out if there will be a last chance qualifier for KOF XI or Neo Geo Battle Collisium? In Japan of course.
Also can anyone house a brother!?
Thanks!

The closest airport is TF Green in Providence. It’s about 30 minutes south of us. When I get back to the states I will be posting more info for people traveling to the tournament including directions, hotels, restaurants, and area guide and so on.
PLEASE DO NOT BOOK ANY HOTELS YET!
I am going to negotiate with the major hotels in the area to try and get discounts
for our event. I will post the info to let you know where we reccomend you stay. We will even try to get you a mint for your pillow. What ever else you put on your pillow, is up to you.
The rules will be decided at a meeting and posted when I return to the states next week.
The Canada entry is still up in the air, I will try my best, I promise.
And although more details will be posted, including disclaimers, regulations…etc, the basic answer is YES The top three people will receive free airfare, and a personal escort to the SBO finals. We will also be spending a few days in Tokyo and Yokohama before then, playing the locals, and eating lots of yakitori, to warm up. It will be a fun time.
The only game we are doing this year is 3S, I can’t say anything due to regulations, but I CAN say that next year will be bigger Truth be told, we are the “new kids on the block” so if we all work together and this goes well, next year will be amazing. I have really big plans for everyone here.
Also Jeron, thank so much for the kind words. To us at TGA, CF is, and always will be, a legend. Our hope is to not be “better” than CF, or compete with it, but to be respected by it’s community and playes. The fact that we were mentioned in the same sentence as CF is an honor. The same also goes for EA
We really do appreciate any and all support from everyone.
As soon as more information becomes available I will post it asap.
Thanks everyone!
Andy
There’s a holiday inn express REALLY close to TGA, Andy. You should try to get them. It’s on 194 Fortin Dr. I think this cause I spent a weekend that I went to that battle for higher grounds tournament there. Nice place.
Ok just forget about the Canadian entry. As far as I know, based on the postings on this thread, I’m the only one considering coming to the tournament. I just want to know how many spots from TGA are going to be given the plane ticket.
the top 3 from the tourney will be given the ticket
I wonder why Arturo…have someone in mind yourself? YooooooooKOOOOOOOO!!!
<-- is gonna set up an online dating service for SF players to meet single japanese women. Pre-register today!
So what if the top 3 is chun, chun, and chun?
Don’t we have this discussion every year?
Yes, and it’s always a blast, glad to see your joining the fun.
We need to confirm that this rule still even exists for SBO, if someone has a list of teams that qualified and/or knows the rules it would help. In the past we just assumed that team tournaments had this rule in general, but I remember seeing more duplicates in team tournies over the past few years.
But your statement is the reason I brought up re-using the idea of 3 single elim tournaments, that removes bracketing problems and most of the rigging problems, and the chun qualifier could practice with the team and make up for any chun deficencies that weren’t exposed in the tournament (because assuming chun wins the first tournament, she would be banned for tournaments 2 and 3).
This would also answer the concerns of players wanting double elim, since in effect they would be getting triple elim.
Or maybe there’s a sbo required format (hope not) and this is all moot. We’ll have to see
I don’t see why anyone from SRK or their ‘faithful fans’ can be angry about SRK not being contacted. Andy has clearly stated that SBO staff came to HIM, not vice versa. He did not do any shadyness by flying to japan and negotiate behind anyones back. Either SBO felt SRK was to sloppy and unorganized OR they are currently in disccusion with SRK staff to be the wc rep (wc rep hasnt been announced yet). People need to chill with the hate.
Just thought i’d reiterate that statement.
J-Cole
ps. Team format, single elim qual, top teams in Round Robin format =P (Best way)
Also, why is the qual on jap sticks but in america? I love jap sticks but havent played on them since the summer and I don’t think most of the people entering are going to be used to them either…
I hope the arcade owner understands you cant just sit down on a japanese cab after playing on american for a long time and expect to play 100%
Because Tokyo Game Action is an import store with all imported cabinets.
Good place to throw a USA qualifier
The obvious problem with this, as I’m sure everyone knows, is that with chun banned from tournament 2, the tiers are shifted. Now there is no chun. Anybody who is countered by her is suddenly better against the competition. (Just stating the obvious facts that everyone always argues about).
The only real way to do it is to sign up as Teams, and play it out as a team tournament. Otherwise, the 3 tournaments with successive banning of winning characters is the best way to go (any format other than a team tourney will have its problems).
Unless, of course, you want to run a swiss tournament round robin format, and take the top 3 people that way (ignoring duplicate characters).
Imagine 64 people compete. First round, everyone is randomly paired, for 32 matches. Second round, everyone who won is paired randomly, everyone who lost is paired randomly. Third round, continues (you always play someone as close to your same record as possible). A 64 man field would take 7 rounds to find a clear winner. You could cut people off after, say, 2 losses (because after 2 losses, you’re not gonna manage to win this thing anyway) to save time.
Then, after 7 rounds of competition (which takes a looooong time, you’d need probably 4+ machines), you’d have a clear cut of who is the best. The cream always rises to the crop.
Say the final results were this:
Player A: 7-0 (Chun)
Player B: 6-1 (Ken)
Player C: 6-1 (Yun)
Player D: 5-2 (Oro)
Players A, B and C would advance
If instead the final results were this:
Player A: 7-0 (Ken)
Player B: 6-1 (Chun)
Player C: 6-1 (Ken)
Player D: 6-1 (Yun)
Players A, C, D would advance. Player C is SOL because a higher ken ranked.
Now, you may run into problems where people tie, but thats what playoffs are for.
Yeah do teams. Thats how japan does it.
better find someone with a sanwa and practice up you got till march
go 3v3 its the only fair way to do it that ken being kicked out when he beat everyone else just cause he plays ken is not fair but if its already in teams it won’t matter since there won’t be 2 of the same character on a team already
Dont you have to play on jap sticks at SBO anyways or do they set up an american cabinet?
Also im pretty sure Andy has a final meeting with the SBO crew to discuss the tourney format for the quals and other stuff.
Sup COLE!!!
